COURSE:    Pebble Beach

LOCATION:  Monterey Peninsula, California

This is a brand new version of Pebble Beach.  My orignal version
was one of my earlier design efforts.  Since Pebble is one of my
favorite courses, I wanted to go back and apply some new ideas I
have picked up along the way.  What started as a minor
modification become a complete overhaul.  I have tried to achieve
as much of the actual course as I could.  I used video tape from
this year's tournament, along with four source books: The Golf
Courses of the Monterey Peninsula, The World Atlas of Golf
Courses (Ferrier), The World Atlas of Golf, and Golf Courses of
the PGA Tour.  As a result of these multiple sources, I had
photographs and descriptions of most holes which allowed for
pretty accurate duplication.

I have modified some of my previous trees and developed some new
ones for this course.  I have also added benches near the tee
areas and if you look closely on the rocks off the ocean you may
spot some California seals watching the action.

I am perhaps more pleased with this design than any I have done
previously, as it seems to achieve the realism and feel of what
they say it is like at Pebble.  On a calm day with no wind and
normal greens, you can expect to score well if you are a good
player.  However, as the winds kick up so does your score.  I
believe this course should always be played with stiff wind to
get the true challenge of Pebble.

I have worked particularly hard to do Pebble's famous holes
correctly.  The 7th is truly a tough little shot.  On 8, if you
slam your tee shot, you will be in the water or out of bounds.  A
three or four wood will leave you a rather lengthy, but beautiful
approach shot over the famous gorge (Jack calls this his very
favorite shot in all of golf).  Both 9 and 10 slant perilously
toward the ocean and are virtually impossible to reach in two
when the wind is strong and in your face.  17 has the famous
hourglass green that slants downhill left.  And of course, the
ever popular 18.  I have tried to place the fairway trees
properly, so that a shot over the ocean is the gamble it is
supposed to be.  Jack, Eddie C. (who looks like Greg Norman), and
I played under normal conditions with a very light breeze.  Jack
and I shot 71, while Eddie C. carded a 69.  I have played with
strong winds and fast greens and shot an 80 and a 77.  

I hope you enjoy the course.  If this is the first of mine you
have tried and you want others, I have done Augusta (which I will
be redoing this spring), Cypress Point, The Olympic Club, Harbour
Town, The Atlanta Country Club, Sugarloaf Country Club, Royal
Dornoch, Desert Highlands, Mauna Kea, and Pinehurst #2.  I upload
