AddressManager for MUI is different from most other similar programs, because it uses Stefan Stuntz`s Magic User Interface. This great user interface gives you the possibilty to configure you application as you like it. AM is not a professional Data-Banking-System, but it has a lot of advantages if you just want to manage names, telephone numbers etc. of some people: - AddressManager is very easy to use.You can learn all the functions in a few minutes. - AddressManager supports MUI and therefore you can configurate its user interface - AddressManager for MUI has: - AppIcons and AppWindows - Commodity support - Online-Help - Asl- or Reqtools-Requester - if you own WB 2.1 or higher you can use it in English or German language - AddressManager for MUI is PD. You can copy and use it freely. If you want to "reward" me for my work and increase my motivation to keep on developing this software, you can send me something nice (letters, postcards, money, gifts etc.). (see also CREDITS) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) INSTALLATION To use AddressManager for MUI you will need an AMIGA with Kickstart and Workbench 2.0 or better. You also need MUI 2.0 or better. It should already be installed on your system-disk. If you don`t have MUI you can: - get MUI (more abou this in the file ReadMe.MUI) - get AddressManager 2.1. This is a program which has almost all features of AM for MUI, but works without MUI. You will have to do without some user- interface-features like online-help or font-sensitivity. AddressManager for MUI supports the Reqtools.library (v38 or higher). It will be used automatically unless you wish to use asl instead. (read CONFIGURATION for more) If you own the Commodore-INSTALLER, you can use one of the scripts in the INSTALL directory. It will do all the work for you. Otherwise: AddressManager for MUI and the docs can be copied to any directory. If you have WB2.1 or better, you can also use AddressManager in german. In this case you should copy the file Catalogs/deutsch/Am_Mui.catalog to Locale:Catalogs/deutsch If the amigaguide.library is installed on your system you can use AM`s online help. Then you should copy the file Help/xxx/Am_Mui.help to Help:xxx XXX should be replaced by the language you want to use. (english or deutsch) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) USING ADDRESSMANAGER FOR MUI I) General information When you work in the main window of AddressManager for MUI you can use the online-help. (If you have the amigaguide.library and if you installed the AM_Mui.help file) If you need some information about a gadget, just place the mouse-pointer above this gadget and press HELP. Now a new window appears, in which you can read a description of the gadget. After you finished reading, just close the window to come back to the AddressManager-window. AddressManager for MUI is a commodity. It can be manipulated with the program EXCHANGE. AddressManager`s main window is an AppWindow. That means that you can "throw" files (data-, parameters- or preferences-files) into this window to load them. If you iconify the program, there is an AppIcon which has exactly the same function as the AppWindow. II) Starting - from the WB: Just double-click the AddressManager-icon to start the program. If you want to load some data at the same time just click the AM-icon once, press SHIFT and double-click the icon of the data-file. - from the Shell: AM_Mui1.0 [FILE] FILE can be some data-file which you want to be loaded together with AM. III) Configuration There are several possibilities of configuring AddressManager for MUI: - MUI-Prefs Here you can set up many features of the application, such as which font is used, how the gadgets look like and many more... (included in the MUI archive) - WB-Prefs AddressManager for MUI uses the same Locale,Printer,Screen etc. preferences as the Workbench - Tooltypes If you click on the Am_Mui1.0 icon and then select INFORMATION form WB`s ICON-menu you can set up the tooltypes. Additionally to standard tooltypes as DONOTWAIT, AddressManager for MUI has 2 own tooltypes: - ASL_FILEREQ forces the program to use asl-filerequester even if the reqtools.library is there. - STD_MSGREQ does the same with message-requesters. - intern prefs: On the PREFERENCES-page you can set up lots of features. If you want the program to use the new prefs you have to press USE or SAVE. The differnce is that in the second case the prefs will be also available after you reboot the system. If you want to save the prefs to use them later and not immediatly you can do it by pressing SAVE AS. If you want to use the saved prefs you have to load the file with the LOAD gadget. The gadget RESTORE resets the prefs to the values which existed when you pressed SAVE or USE for the last time. Now the different things you can set up: - DIRECTORY. Here you can define the working directory of AM for MUI. This directory will be activated automatically in all requesters until you select an other drawer. - the part HOW TO PRINT consists of 4 gadgets: - HORIZONTAL Here you can decide if you want horizontal, for example: Surname Name | Street City | Telephone or vertical, for example: Surname Name Street City Telephone output. - SURNAME FIRST decides whether the surname or the firts name is printed firts - HEADERS decides whether every line/column begins with NAME:, STREET... - ONLY EXISTING... (only in VERTICAL-mode) makes the program NOT print empty lines like Remarks: - The part WHAT TO PRINT changes the way items are printed. The first gadget selects the item (NAME,SURNAME...) you want to set up. The next gadget decides whether the item is printed and in which style. If you activate SEPARATE, the item will be separated from the next one by " | " otherwise only by " ". (only in HORIZONTAL-mode) CHARS (only in HORIZONTAL-mode) decides how many chars of a line will be allocated for this item. The total of all items and the chars separating them cannot be higher then the lenght of a line of your printer (which can be set up in the PRINTER-prefs). EXAMPLE: Your PRINTER-prefs look like this: Pica (10cpi) Left margin : 2 Right margin: 78 So there are 76 columns free for AddressManager output. Surname Name | Street City | Telephone ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xxxx Xxxxx | Xxxxx Xxx x XXXXX XXXXXX | XXXX/XXXXXX Yyyyyyy Yyyyyy | YYYY Yyy y YYYYY Yyyyyyyy | YYYYY/YYY 10 10 ^ 20 15 ^ 12 | | Separation Separation To get this output you have to set the PRINT gadget to "Do not print" in BIRTHDAY, COUNTRY and REMARKS. You should set CHARS to the following vallues: Surname : 10 Name : 10 Street : 20 City : 15 Telephone : 12 Also you should activate Separate in NAME and CITY. CHARS FREE shows you how many chars are still free. IV) Editing data - Adding new entries: Enter the data in the string-gadgets on the MAIN-Page. If you finished editing them just press NEW PERSON. The person will be added to the list and you will see the name in the listview-gadget. - Viewing data: Just click on the name of the person in the listview-gadget. - Changing data: Click on the name of the person in the listview-gadget. Then edit the data in the string-gadgets. After finishing it just press UPDATE. - Deleting data: Select one or more entries and then press DELETE. - CLEAR deletes the contents of the string-gadgets without removing the entry from the list. Useful if you want to enter a new person. V) Loading, saving, printing... - NEW delets all data. - With LOAD you can restore saved data. If there are already some entries in the list you can select whether you want to add the new data to the old or to replace the old by the new. - SAVE AS and SAVE write the data into a file. The difference is that SAVE tries to save under the old filename, while SAVE AS always opens a requester Also SAVE AS is able to save only the selected entries. - PRINT lets you choose whether you want to print all data or only the selected entries. What the outputs looks like you can be set up on the PREFERENCES-page. You can also print on a letter envelope. The printing is than centered and consists only of the name, and the address. Also the country is printed unless you have selected DO NOT PRINT for it on the PREFERENCES-page. IV) Searching - on the page called SEARCHING PARAMETERS you can edit the parameters in the string-gadgets. The parameters may contain jokers like #? (more about this in your AMIGA-manual). The capitalization is ignored. On this page you can also save and load the parameters and CLEAR the string gadgets. - To start searching using the parameters you have edited on the PARAMETERS page just press SEARCH. The program always starts with the first entry. If a person which fits all parameters is found, it will be displayed in the string-gadgets, otherwise the message "NOT FOUND!" will be shown. If you want to continue searching, just press GO ON. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) HISTORY - AddressManager for MUI 1.0 (04.07.1994): - first release ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) FUTURE PLANS - use good ideas, which I hope to get from you - a complete AREXX-Port - editing of several files at the same time I will of course double my efforts if I know that there are people who use the programm.
