CAPACITORS There are literaly hundreds of different types of capacitors, ranging from Electrolytic to Ceramic and so on. Look at the IFF samples to get a small idea of just what there is, this is a very big world where the capacitor lives. Electrolytic capacitors are a device that is made so that the voltage passes one way only although the voltage can pass in either way, it is better for it to pass in the desired direction unlike an Ceramic or some other type where the voltage can pass in any direction. Electrolytic's can be used in power supplies and audio amplifiers, but of course in other applications too. A large Electrolytic say the value would be 4700uf would be seen in something like power supplies for high powered equipment. There are other type of Electrolytic's which are in small radios and other small electronic equipment. What is a capacitor, well really it is a device in two parts, if you look at a swiss role you will see one layer of chocolate and the other layer in cream, well a capacitor is very much like that except of course there is no chocolate or cream instead there is a silver foil and an insulator, which makes the device up to work. If you look at the IFF 'Inside' then you see more of what I mean. You may have herd the expression 'smoothing it out' well a capacitor does just that, to be more precise if an AC voltage passes through a capacitor then the AC voltage would be smoothed from AC to DC helping to cut down any hum from the AC side of the supply, look at the IFF 'supply'. .....
