The same action with the right mouse button will make the text scroll backwards. When you have finished reading, press `ESC` to quit. ************ INTRODUCTION ************ Welcome to the Pro-Gamble 2 demonstration disk. What do you hope to achieve by using Pro-Gamble? Most likely, you will have answered `Profit!` to that question - the good news is that by using Pro-Gamble properly you should be able to turn your betting into an extremely profitable pastime. However - you should read this guide carefully before beginning. It explains exactly how to get the most out of Pro-Gamble - diving in at the deep end can prove hazardous (and expensive) despite the fact that Pro-Gamble has been designed to be easy to use. Many users of Pro-Gamble will have little computer-knowledge, others will know little about racing, some may know all or nothing about both - with this in mind, I have tried to explain everything as clearly as possible in this manual. I apologise if it gets a bit simplistic at times, but I`m sure you`ll agree that there`s nothing worse than trying to figure out how to use a program, turning to the manual for help only to discover that you need a book to understand the book! Pro-Gamble 2 is a major upgrade (in fact, total re-write) of the original Pro-Gamble. Many features been changed, added etc, but users of PG1 should feel quite at home with this version. Do still read this guide carefully though. ******************* WHAT IS PRO-GAMBLE? ******************* The result of many months work! The original Pro-Gamble was released in August `94 and was designed to fill a gap in the market for an easy to use, accurate horse racing predictor. Soon it became apparent that there was much more that could be added to PG, and I decided to start again with a completely new program based on PG`s ideas. There are many other prediction programs available, ranging in cost from a couple of pounds to over a hundred! I couldn`t find any that met my needs. Some were difficult to use, taking hours to enter data from a specialist racing paper. Others required constant updating with details of every race taking place (time consuming or expensive). Some were uselessly simple, others just didn`t work! Pro-Gamble takes data from your normal daily newspaper and turns it into predictions in a useable format (eg: Placepot) with the minimum of fuss and swearing at the computer. All this at a very reasonable cost. The program is split into 3 main parts. First of all, you enter basic details of each of the races taking place that day (2-3 minutes), you are then given advice on which races to consider betting on. Next you enter the form details of top 6 favourites in each of the recommended races directly from the newpaper. Finally you are are presented with the predictions in a variety of formats along with a list of recommended bets (Yankee, Placepot etc). Other features include a returns calculator to work out your winnings for you (can you work out the return on a Lucky 63 in less than a second?). Each of these features is covered in detail within this guide. ************* DOES IT WORK? ************* YES! Follow the advice given within the program and you should find that your winnings increase dramatically. Pro-Gamble isn`t designed to pick winners particularly - it`s meant to find horses that are more than likely going to be placed, obviously a good proportion of those do actually go on to win. By careful odds-watching it`s possible to make a good profit on place-betting. Pro-Gamble`s real power lies in it`s Placepot selections. It can generate a Placepot perm for you of between 1 and 64 bets (more on this later) that allows you to win regularly for a very small stake. In the last fortnight, I`ve put on 10 Placepot bets at 1.60 each. Of those, I`ve had 6 Placepot wins - not massive ones, but profitable all the same. The other `power bets` include Trios/Tricasts and Dual Forecasts which it seems to be fairly successful at. IMPORTANT - Decide now that you are going to trust Pro-Gamble`s predictions. It`s all too easy to be put off by newspaper tipsters, favourites or a horse with your name etc. Don`t follow the herd. If you`re not going to use Pro-Gamble properly then you`ve wasted your money. Instructions on how to use Pro-Gamble follow, but first .... ******************************** SO, WHAT`S MISSING IN THIS DEMO? ******************************** To encourage you to purchase the full version, some of Pro-Gamble`s features have been removed from this version. The limitations of the demo are: o Only 2 race meetings can be dealt with on any one day, the full version allows an unlimited number of races to be predicted. This is more important than it sounds - Pro-Gamble looks at brief details of every race taking place that day to see which ones are most likely to make you money. Obviously, if the program can pick & choose races from all 4,5 or 6 meetings, it will give better results than when it`s restricted to choosing from just 2. o The Placepot Perming feature has been disabled in this version. This is because if it was included, you would be winning so often that you wouldn`t feel the need to upgrade to the full version! It`s impossible to guarantee wins on the horses, but the perm feature gets as close to guaranteeing wins as is possible. From my experience of using this feature, it would be very difficult to lose money on it. It calculates for you, a placepot bet costing as little as possible (between 1.00 and 2.00 pounds is about average) that has the best possible chance of success. When it isn`t successful, it is unusual if more than 1 race has let the bet down (ie: 5 out of 6 were successful). Since Pro-Gamble began testing, it has been in CONSTANT profit with this feature! I`m now betting with the bookies money rather than my own! o The Returns Calculator has been disabled. It allows you to calculate your winnings for Single, Double, Treble, Patent, Yankee, Canadian, Heinz, Super Heinz, Goliath, Lucky 15, Lucky 31 and Lucky 63 bets. It is as easy to use as the rest of Pro-Gamble and you can even perform `What If` calculations, eg: What if I changed the stake to ..? , What if the bet had been each-way? or What if that horse had lost? Can you calculate the return on an Each-Way Lucky 63 in less than a second? The full version of PG2 can! I`ve included extracts from some of the letters I`ve recieved from users at the end of this document. ****************************** HOW DO I GET THE FULL VERSION? ****************************** The full version of Pro-Gamble 2 is available NOW. For your money you will recieve ... o Your Pro-Gamble 2 disk (Sent to you same day - guaranteed). o A free upgrade to the next version of Pro-Gamble 2 when that becomes available, giving even more new features. o Demo copies of all my other programs as and when they become available. Many of the features in Pro-Gamble 2 are a result of user`s comments and suggestions. It`s YOUR program. I can be contacted at the address given above. If you don`t want to purchase Pro-Gamble 2, then please do write telling me why not! I need to know so as I can make sure that any problems are fixed. *************** GETTING STARTED *************** -- BACKING UP YOUR DISK -- !!!!!!! YOU MUST DO THIS !!!!!!!! The first thing to do is make a backup copy of the Pro-Gamble disk. Details on how to do this can be found in the Workbench manual that came with your Amiga. If the copy is made using the Workbench DiskCopy function, make sure that the disk is name `Pro-Gamble` and not `Copy of Pro-Gamble`. Put the original away in a safe place, in case anything happens to your backup copy. When using Pro-Gamble, the little sliding tab on the top right corner of the disk needs to be in the closed position. If left open, strange things may happen.... Pro-Gamble has been checked for all known viruses and has been found to be clear, but it won`t do any harm to check again for yourself if you have a virus-checker program available. Please see the disclaimer at the end of this document regarding viruses. -- STARTING THE PROGRAM -- The disk should be in the drive when the Amiga is switched on or re-set. A workbench screen will then appear, containing a Pro-Gamble disc icon. Click twice quickly on this disc and a window will appear containing some new icons. Again, double click on the PG2 icon. The program will then load - note that this does take a while, so don`t panic if nothing happens for a while. The screen will go black for a bit - again don`t worry - it hasn`t crashed! Eventually, you will see the Pro-Gamble title screen. Users loading the program through their own Workbench on a hard-drive should click on the `PG2 (Hard Drive)` icon instead. Please see the end of this document for details on Hard Drive installation. -- PRO-GAMBLE SCREEN -- The main screen is basically the same throughout and consists of three parts. The title bar at the top tells you what generally is happening (eg: Form entry, Final Predictions etc). The main bit in the middle is where all the menus etc appear. At the bottom is a blue box - the help box. At all times, the help box will tell you what you are meant to be doing. If you get stuck, it`s more than likely that you find the solution to your problem there. -- SETTING THE DATE -- Pro-Gamble needs to know the date. Some Amigas have battery backed up clocks - if you have one of those then this part doesn`t apply to you. If you don`t have a clock, then PG will detect this and ask you for the date. Just enter the date in the requested format. ********** NEWSPAPERS ********** You will be given a list of newspapers. Simply press the key indicated next to the name of the paper you will be using that day. Any listed daily paper can be used, but you may find that some give better results than others, as the betting order etc varies from one to the other. I`ve been using the Daily Mail and have found no problems with that. Experimentation is the name of the game, but start with your normal paper and see how you get on with that. ********* MAIN MENU ********* When the newspaper has been selected, the main menu will appear. This contains four options... -- PREDICT -- This is the option that will take you into the program proper. -- RETURNS CALCULATOR -- Calculating the return on any multiple bet is a nightmare, so this selecting this will take you to a section of Pro-Gamble that`ll do it for you. This feature is only available in the full version. -- ABOUT PRO-GAMBLE -- Selecting this gives you some information about exactly which version of Pro-Gamble you are using, the amount of free memory you have left etc. Pressing a key when in this mode will return you to the main menu. -- QUIT -- Returns you to Workbench after checking with you to make sure that you are finished with Pro-Gamble for the day. ******* PREDICT ******* ************ RACE DETAILS ************ When you have selected predict, one of two things will happen. If you have used the program before, you will be asked which horses were 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of the predicted races last time you used Pro-Gamble. This information is used for `Intellibet` - Pro-Gamble`s exclusive artificial intelligence feature. It actually learns from results of previous races making the predictions more and more accurate as time goes on. Because of this, it is important that you keep details of results whenever you have used Pro-Gamble. Just make a quick note from teletext, the bookies or keep the results section of the next days newspaper until you use PG again, after which you can just bin it. Once you have given PG the results (which only takes a minute or so), or if you haven`t used Pro-Gamble before you will go onto the next section. -- WHERE ARE TODAY`S RACES? -- Pro-Gamble wants to know about ALL of the races taking place. You won`t have to enter details of every horse, just details about the races (distances etc) so that PG can advise which races you obtain predictions for. These recommendations are based on PGs previous experiences of similar races. It is probably the most important factor in the whole process, so it`s worth taking the time to do it properly (just a few minutes). NOTE: The demo version actually only lets you enter details of 2 of the meetings. It narrows down the choice for the computer, but at least it still lets you try out the program a little, albeit in a slightly restricted manner. Start to type the name of the first course where there is racing. PG will make a `bing` noise when it recognises the name (normally before you have finished typing it). All race courses in England, Scotland, Ireland (North & South) and Wales are recognised. Next enter the number of races taking place there. Repeat this process until all meetings are entered then press `ESC`. -- GOING -- You will then be asked more about the first meeting. If more than one type of racing takes place at a course, you will be asked what type it is that day (eg: Flat, NH, Flat All Weather etc). Next, you will be asked for the prevailing going (unless all weather in which case it will always be `Standard`). Codes for each of the going types are shown in the help box. Finally, you will be asked to confirm that the race-type and going details are correct. -- RACE DETAILS -- More details are now needed about each of the races at the meeting. An example from a newspaper is given. This example is from the Daily Mail, the order may vary in other papers but you will be asked for it in the order in which it appears in your selected paper. 3.35 - ROSLING KING HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS B) $15,000 added ($10,747.50) 3m (8) The information requested is: TIME: In this case 3.35. Time should be entered without any punctuation, so for this example, it would be 335 VALUE: Some papers give just one cash figure, others two. If there are two, use the one in brackets. Again ignore punctuation and also any pence that may be included (10747). DISTANCE: The distance should be entered in miles and furlongs. If yards are also given, ignore them. (3m) RUNNERS: In this case, the figure in brackets at the end of the line (8), but sometimes you`ll actually have to count the number of horses in the race. HANDICAP: This requires a straight `Y` for Yes or `N` for No answer. If the word `Handicap` appears anywhere in the race name then Yes, otherwise No. (Yes in example). NH-TYPE: If it`s a National Hunt race, then you`ll be asked the type. It will be Chase, Hurdles or NH Flat. (Hurdles in example). Pro-Gamble will sometimes automatically know when you have finished entering a piece of information, in which case it`ll bing and go onto the next item. if it doesn`t, then it`s waiting on another keypress. If you have finished entering that particular piece of data, press RETURN. An example of this would be the number of runners. If you were to enter `3` it would wait for another keypress in case there were 30 something runners, whereas if you entered 9, it is unlikely that there would 90, and so it would assume that 9 was correct. This process is repeated until each race has been covered. It will then go on to the next meeting. Although this sounds complex amnd time consuming - it`s not. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes a couple of minutes to enter details of a whole days racing. Remember - the help box is there to remind you what you`re meant to be doing at all times. -- BREAKDOWN OF AVAILABLE RACES -- When all the races have been entered, Pro-Gamble will analyse them, and split them into categories of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Average, Below Average and Poor. It will also decide which set of 6 races gives the best chance of winning the Placepot. A list of how many races fall into each of these categories is shown on the screen, along with a seperate rating for the chance the BEST placepot meeting has of being successful. View this list, and then press a key. -- RACE SELECTION -- You now have a decision to make. which races are you going evaluate further and try to find the winner? This is easier to explain if I give you another example. Lets say there are two meetings - Wetherby (6 Races) and Lingfield (6 Races). `Recommended` races are ones in the categories of Excellent, Very Good & Good. At Wetherby there are 4 recommended races, at Lingfield 3. It`s been decided that the best Placepot meeting is Wetherby. The options available to you are: A: Best Placepot (All 6 Wetherby races regardless of category.) B: Recommended Races (7 races - 4 at Wetherby, 3 at Lingfield.) C: Rec Races & Placepot (9 races - 7 rec races as above + 2 extra at Wetherby making 6 for the placepot.) D: Other Combination Takes you to another sub-menu letting you do things such as `All Races` or `Excellent Only`. E: Abandon You`ve seen that today`s racing is crap and decided not to bother! It`s actually really simple - I think I`ve made it sound more complicated than it is! More often than not you`re only going to select options A or C. Next to each of the options is the time it is estimated you will take to enter all the data. Obviously, this is irrelevant the first time you use the program, it`s initially set to about 4 minutes per race, but you may be quicker or slower - it doesn`t matter, but Pro-Gamble will monitor your speed so that next time, you`ll have a rough idea of how long it`ll take you. This estimate is constantly adjusted, so that as you get quicker at entering the data the estimates will reduce. You`ll find that it`ll probably settle at about 2 minutes per race after a while. That means that a whole placepot will only take about 12 minutes from this point! -- LIST RACES -- Finally, you are shown a list of all the races to be predicted. They are colour coded by category - pinkish ones being recommended, blue not - so as you can see at a glance what`s what. It`ll have taken you longer to read this so far, than it will to reach this stage when entering data ... honest! ************* HORSE DETAILS ************* -- NAMES -- Only the top 6 favourites as given in the newspaper are used in the calculations. I found that more than that didn`t increase the programs accuracy at all. Enter the name of each horse (in the order given in the paper). If you want to abbreviate the names to save typing effort, then feel free to do so, but just make sure that you`ll recognize them again both in the actual predictions and also next day when you have to enter the results! If there aren`t 6 favourites listed, enter however many there are, pressing RETURN after each one, then press `ESC` when there are no more. You will then be prompted to enter the Race Card Number for each horse. This is the very first number given at the left hand side of the line containing the horses name. Eg: 7 (1) 000-P2 CAPPUCCINO GIRL The racecard number in this case is 7. Sometimes the race card number will be over 100 eg: 107 or 207. This is tied in to the race number (eg: horse 7 in race 1 or horse 7 in race 2) - if that`s the case, still just enter the 7. If in doubt, count the horses in the race. The above example would be the 7th horse in the list. It`s vitally important that you get the racecard numbers right - make any mistakes here and you`ll end up backing a donkey! Again, sometimes the program won`t need you to press RETURN between numbers. For example if there were 13 runners in a race - if you enter the race card number as being 4, it must be 4 not 40 something, whereas if you enter 1 it could be 10,11,12 or 13 so you will need to press RETURN. PG will bing when it has accepted a race card number. When everything has been entered you`ll be asked to check it before continuing. Do check it! -- FORM -- OK, example time again ... 6 (10) 0020-13 TEMPERING 14 (C&D C BF) D Chapman 9-9-5 Dean McKeown 76 You will now be on the main form-entry screen. Each of the following details will be asked for in turn. FORM LINE The string of numbers found to the immediate left of the horse`s name (0020-13) It should be entered, ignoring any dashes or other punctuation (in the example you would enter 002013). Letters as well as numbers should be entered. If there is no form, just press RETURN. DAYS SINCE LAST RACE To the right of the name (14). Just enter it as it is, but ignore any letters that may be attached to it such as `J` or `F`. If it`s over 999 then just enter it as being 999. If there is no figure given, just press RETURN. C/D/CD/BF Given after the days since last race, normally in brackets is a string of letters and numbers. The ones we are interested in are C - Course Win (If it appears type CR) D - Distance Win (If it appears type D) CD or C&D - Course and Distance Win (If it appears type CD) BF - Beaten Favourite (If it appears type B) Some papers will also give a number (eg:D8 CD2) - just ignore the numbers. Also ignore any other letters such as `V` or `B`. So in the example, we would have typed CD CR B (RETURN) When you type in one of the codes, you will hear a bing. If there are anymore codes given, type those in as well - it`ll bing after each one. When you have entered them all, press RETURN. If none of the above (C/CD/D/BF) appear, just press RETURN. NEWSPAPER RATING All newspapers give their own rating for each horse. It makes sense for us to use someone else`s expertise to back up our own calculations, so we include these ratings. Just type in the rating (in the example: 76). If no rating is given, just press RETURN. DRAW NUMBER (Only for Flat Racing) With Flat racing a draw figure is given in brackets after the race card number (10) in the example. Just enter it as it is. In NH racing, this figure won`t appear in the paper - we don`t need it. This process is repeated for each horse in each race. ************ PREDICTIONS! ************ That`s all the hard work done now. The computer will have worked out it`s predictions for the day. A menu will appear listing the different ways of viewing the predictions. Below that menu, is a list of the BEST bets of the day. These are bets that are especially recommended - examples of such bets might be TRICAST 2.30 Wolverhampton LUCKY 15 First 4 Races On List Remember - just because a bet isn`t on this list, doesn`t mean that it shouldn`t be done - these are just the `Unmissable` ones. The menu has four options: -- LIST ALL PREDICTIONS -- This will list all of the predictions for the day in Quality order (Excellent, Very Good, Good etc). The first race is displayed on the screen with Pro-Gamble`s 3 selections for that race. One of them will be highlighted - this is the one you should back. The other two are 2nd and 3rd best and should be used in Tricasts or to replace Non-Runners. To view the next race on the list press `N`. You can flick through each of the races in this manner, pressing `N` for Next or `P` to go back to the previous one. If you want to print out a copy of the predictions, press F10. Make sure that the printer is fully ready (switched on, paper loaded, on line) before selecting print though, as sometimes unpredictable things can happen if not. Note: You`ll probably have to set your printer to `condensed` or `elite` mode before choosing the print option, otherwise text will spill over from one line of the printout to the next, making things very complicated to look at! When you have finished viewing the predictions press `Q` to quit to the prediction menu again. The races are listed in quality order to make it easier to place multiple bets. For example if you were doing a treble, you`d use the first 3 races on the list, if you were doing a Lucky 63 - the first 6 etc. Please be aware of the odds though, especially in place betting. If the odds are too low it`s not worth backing them each-way. An alternative method is to go through the prediction list picking out the ones with reasonable odds and seeing how many you`ve got, making a Yankee or Lucky 31 or whatever you can with those value bets. -- Four Line PlacePot -- The simpler of the 2 Placepot formats - shows you 4 SEPERATE possible placepot entries that you would enter at a pound each. Mainly for people who just want to put on one or two placepot bets. The layout is pretty much the same as on a Placepot slip. The next option, Placepot Perm, is the preferred option for Placepot betting. -- PlacePot Perm -- My favourite option! It is possible to place a placepot bet using a permutation of several lines. Pro-Gamble will analyse the predictions and come up with cheapest perm that has a good chance of winning. This feature is VERY successful. Please note that the predictions generated by this part of the program may well be different from those in the main prediction list. This is because different horses make good Placepot propositions in that there isn`t the same need to pick horses with a good price. NOTE: This feature is only available in the full version of Pro-Gamble. -- QUIT -- This option takes you back to the main menu. ****************** RETURNS CALCULATOR ****************** Although not directly connected with the prediction side of things, a returns calculator was something I hadn`t seen elsewhere, and thought would be a valuable tool in Pro-Gamble. Anyone who`s tried calculating the return on an Each-Way Lucky 63 will know that it`s no easy task, especially if you want to do a `what if` (what if that one had won, what if I`d staked xxx, what if it had been win only etc). Pro-Gamble can do all that for you! The PG Returns calculator is totally independant from the prediction process. You CAN use it without having made any predictions. NOTE: This feature is only available in the full version. ********** FINALLY... ********** That`s about it really, the program is easy to use - it was designed that way. Stick to the guidelines laid out here and in the program and you should have no problems. As a registered Pro-Gamble user you will be entitled to free upgrades to this program as they become available - so it`s in your interests to contribute to those upgrades by sending me your comments and suggestions. Even if it`s just that you don`t like the way a certain menu works or you find the bing annoying - let me know! I can fix it for you! What can be done to make Pro-Gamble even better? Tell Me! Thanks for trying out PG - I hope you enjoy using it and find it profitable. I hope you will purchase the full version - if you need any further information then please do not hesitate to contact me. **************** ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS **************** Pro-Gamble 2 couldn`t have been written without the use of: AMOS 1.36 - Europress Software Personal Paint - Cloanto Much More - Fridtjof Siebert Pro-Gamble 2 wouldn`t have been written without the support of: The PD Libraries who distributed demo copies - thanks all.
