Martinique is the northernmost
of the Windward Islands in the
West Indies. It comprises
three groups of volcanic hills
and the intervening lowlands.
The highest peak is Mount
Pelee, notorious for its
eruption of 1902, when in
minutes it killed all the
inhabitants of St. Pierre
(estimated at about 28,000)
except one - a prisoner saved
by the thickness of his cell.
Bananas, rum and pineapples
are the main agricultural
exports, but tourism is the
biggest earner. Transport
equipment and food are the
main imports.
