The Republic of Ireland is one
of Europe's most westerly
countries, situated in the
Atlantic Ocean and separated
from Great Britain by the
Irish Sea. It has an equable
mild climate. The Republic
extends over four-fifths of
the island of Ireland, and the
west and southwest are
mountainous. The central plain
is largely limestone covered
in boulder clay which provides
good farmland and pasture.
Despite the fertile land, the
Republic of Ireland remains
one of the poorest countries
in western Europe. The rural
population tend to migrate to
the cities, mainly Dublin,
which is the capital and the
main industrial centre.
