Smith User's Manual OVERVIEW -------- TypeFinder will search thru a PageStream document file and find all known fonts (up to a limit of twelve) and display them. That way, you don't have to tell PageStream's Font Manager about ALL the fonts in your system at once, nor wait forever for it to update the list everytime you want to switch type in your document. You also won't have to remember what type was used where, or waste space creating a template for something trivial. TypeFinder will only run from the CLI. Do not try to attach an icon to it or it will crash the machine. TypeFinder returns error messages to the CLI process that it was started from. It uses that CLI as StdOut. If PAGESTREAM2:PSDocuments/ exists before running TypeFinder, it will automatically CD to it, so that pressing return alone in the file requester will place you immediately in your documents' dir. If it doesn't exists, or is not assigned, you will get a requester asking you to insert PAGESTREAM2: in any drive. Just CANCEL this requester. During both initialization and search routines, the mouse pointer will change to a diamond shape to show you that it is busy. It will revert back to its default pointer when not busy. STARTING UP TYPEFINDER ---------------------- First of all, copy the file to your S: dir. Then copy the 2 libraries to your LIBS: dir, if necessary. There are several example PageStream document files included to use as input for testing, before you run TypeFinder on your own files. Although TypeFinder does not write to any files (only reads are done) it is still best to protect your document by copying it to ram: and running TypeFinder on the copy, instead of your original, in case an error should occur. TypeFinder does a byte-by-byte read of input files, so using a large document make take some time on a plain vanilla 68000 machine. There is currently no way to abort a search once it is started. When, and if, an update is written, that will probably be fixed. Also, if your document contains only one typeface, and it is the default, there are times that it may not be displayed in the boxes. But this is unimportant since you are never searching for your default type anyway. kickstart should v1.2+ arp.library should be v39.1+ inovatools1.library should be v1.1+ Both libraries are included in this archive. On my system, the defaults types are only the outline fonts that come with PageStream (Times, Triumvirate & Garamond). All others are loaded only when needed. Each typeface resides in its own separate sub-directory. ADDING FONTS TO TYPEFINDER -------------------------- TypeFinder may be expanded by the user to add new fonts. There are 148 typefaces recognized with this release. New ones can be added to the file. First of all, take a look at the file. It contains comments at the beginning. To add a typeface, a little work is involved: (It was either do it this way and let the user add fonts, or make them hardcoded into the program, which would require waiting for updates. A good way to collect typefaces, though!) Load the document with the new typeface into PageStream. Open up the Font Manager in PageStream. Now REMOVE the typeface from the list. Close the Font Manager, and re-open it. Now look at the typefaces listed. One of them, the one you removed, will now have a number in the gadget instead of the name of the font. Write this number down! Now load the file into an editor (not a word processor!) and add your font. Insert it alphabetically into the file, by typeface name. The number you wrote down goes first, followed by a single space, then the name of the typeface being added. This can be followed by either a single LF (linefeed) or a comment, then the linefeed. Now, save out the file and exit the editor. Next time you run TypeFinder, it will, from then on, recognize your new font(s). That's about it... be sure to follow the structure outlined in the file! DO NOT insert empty lines anywhere into the file! Also, the number you are adding should be padded with zeroes or spaces, if it is less than 8 digits. See the example in . If you have any problems at all running TypeFinder, this is the place to look. If the file structure is incorrect, you will get erroneous results and/or garbage on the screen. BUGS ---- None found. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggestions are welcomed. Well, at least I'll read them. TypeFinder was assembled with HiSoft's GenAm v2.08, using Lattice includes. Source code is included. Please do not remove any images. Also send me any modifications and/or additions you make. TypeFinder was developed entirely while under the influence of marijuana! If what our government is saying about marijuana is true, then TypeFinder could never have been conceived, let alone written, working and bug-free! In 1988, the chief administrative law judge of the Drug Enforcement Administration wrote: "There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality... In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume." The dangers of marijuana are far from overwhelming. Can we say that about ANY other drug, legal or otherwise, even aspirin? Telecommunications is the only place that freedom of speech truly exists anymore in America. btw... I've used PageStream, on the job, for the last year, and many times wished I taken the time to write this program. Only after quiting my job did I find the time! I would like to add that PageStream v2.2 is a helluva program, probably the best of its kind, and I would highly recommend it, from a professional user's viewPort. PageStream adds icons to documents as it saves them. I use this generic icon in TypeFinder. I assume this is not a copyrighted symbol. If wrong, and/or anyone at Soft-Logik objects to me using it, then please inform me immediately by mail and I will remove it and print an apology to Soft-Logik in an update release.
