3C273 is the brightest known quasar,
blazing away at magnitude 12.8. This 
is probably the most distant object 
visible in an amateur scope, at an 
estimated 3 billion light years away.
at this distance, a "bright" galaxy
would be only 18th or 19th magnitude.
