InterView (version 3.1) ----------------------- Author -- Written by John Sawaya, 18 Rocky Glen Road, Oxford PA 19363. Restrictions and warranties -- None. This program is available to use, share and distribute. Upgrades are sent to registered users and gratuities are appreciated. What it does -- InterView helps you organize NUMEROUS files on disks by providing easy to use options that list, copy, delete, sort, search and more. Each catalog can contain upto 10,000 files and 2,000 directories. How to start -- Double-click the IV icon or "RUN IV" in the CLI, it works either way. The default size for the catalog of files and directories: = 1000 files = 200 directories (number of files divided by 5) If you need upto 10000 files (approx. 400 disks): RUN IV 10000 If you have very little memory, try just 100 files: RUN IV 100 Or, you could choose any number between 100 and 10000. Memory is allocated as needed. The catalog -- The catalog contains file-names, the parent directory, number of days since the files were revised (or copied), time last saved, file size (in BYTES and BLOCKS), and the file comments. The catalog also contains the disk-volume names (like WorkBench:), subdirectory names (WorkBench:devs/printers), drive names (DF0:), and even your printer (PRT: used to "copy" files to). The available space in each directory is displayed, along with the age (in days) of the directory listings. Slide Bars -- The LEFT slide bars make large jumps. They scale from 1 to the maximum number of files or directories. If you use the default setting of 1000 files, then moving the LEFT slider down halfway would show file number 500 (if you have that many in your current catalog). The RIGHT slide bars smoothly (dynamically) scroll the catalog, both up-down and left-right (for long file names). Menu options can control the scroll rate (fast, medium, or slow). Instead of using the slide bars, you may prefer using the arrow keys. Directory listings -- Select a drive name (such as df0:), then pick "List All". This will create a catalog of all file names, and directories on that drive. (To refresh a single directory, use "List Dir". Note, you should select the actual disk-volume name from the directory catalog, NOT the drive name. For example, select "WorkBench" not "df0:". The reason for this is that more than one disk may have the same name. InterView keeps track of each directory by using index numbers and pointers.) Sorting -- There are many options to sort the file catalog: by name, by directory, by size (largest first), by date last modified (latest first), and/or by grouping the "selected" files at the top of the catalog. The sorting is fast, because only the pointers are swaped, the actual information stays where it is in memory. "AutoSort On" means that subsequent directory listings will resort the files according to the last sort performed. Selecting files and directories -- When a row in a catalog is selected with the left mouse button, it changes colors. Functions are performed using the selected items. For example, to copy several files to some directory: select the files, the directory, and select the "Copy" block. You can select files by entering part of the file name, or some text contained in the file comment. The search is not case sensitive, 'a' == 'A'. Messages -- Messages are displayed under the title bar to explain various functions as they are performed. For example, when you copy a bunch of files, the messages will tell you which file is currently being copied. Comments -- To add a comment to a file description: (1) select the "Show Comm" block to see the file comments, (2) select a file, (3) type your comment into the text block (DO NOT PRESS RETURN), (4) select the "Comment" block. Save and load catalogs -- You can save catalogs. If you have LOTS of disks, you probably don't remember what's on half of them! When you want to locate some file you got some time ago, you can find it by searching the catalog. To save a catalog, type in a complete filename (don't hit RETURN key), and choose the "Save" menu option. To load catalogs, type the filename and choose "Load", instead. Of course, you could just select the catalog file name if it happens to be there. Hot-keys -- ESC Exit from INTERVIEW program RETURN Used for key-word search to select file names. keypad "0" List all files in df0: (they don't AutoSort) keypad "1" List all files in df1: keypad "2" List all files in df2: keypad "3" List all files in df3: keypad "."
