Tele Go --------------------------------- | Copyright 1989 by Mark Carnes | --------------------------------- This program is free of charge. You may make and distribute copies as long as you include this file. This program is designed to let two people with Amigas play the game of Go, across the phone lines. It requires both players to have a copy of this program, and a Hayes-compatable modem. It will work with a 512k Amiga. It uses approximately 200k. This is a preliminary version. It may have some undetected bugs. If anyone has any comments, or problems, leave me a message on the AMAZ! BBS at (602) 843-8574, I will try to reply. (Until 6/30/89) The game of Go is an ancient Chinese board game that is played extensively throughout the far east. It is becoming more and more popular in America as well. A brief summary of the game mechanics follows, but much better instructions exist (check out any well stocked game store). Object ------ The object of the game is to finish the game with the most amount of territory surrounded. You lose a point for every stone that is captured. Description of Play ------------------- The white player goes first laying down a single stone on any intersection on the 19x19 grid. The black player then lays down his stone on any other free intersection that is not a illegal. Play then alternates back and forth between the two players. A player may "pass" giving up his turn at any time. Once both players pass in consecutive turns, the game is over and any stones that aren't alive are removed. Capturing Stones ---------------- When a group of one players stones is completely surrounded by another player's stones, they are captured, and removed. Only vertical and horizontal directions count for surrounding a stone. The edges count as surrounding everyone. Here are some examples: O O |O OXO OXO |XO O --- --- X is surrounded. X is surrounded X is surrounded Groups of stones can be surrounded as well. OO O OXXO OXO OO OXXO ---- X is surrounded X is surrounded Illegal Moves ------------- You may not place a stone where it would be captured if by placing it, no other pieces will be captured. O OX OaO OaOX O OX 'a' would be illegal for X. 'a' would be legal because an O would be captured. You may not repeat any pattern that has existed on the board before. OX OX OX O OX OX X O OX OX OX OX Turn 1 Turn 2 Turn 3: illegal capture. (must play somewhere else) Ending the Game --------------- When both players "pass", the game is over. Any pieces that are not alive should be removed. These pieces will be counted as captured pieces. When all the pieces are removed the score displayed will be correct. Removing Pieces --------------- Any of one players pieces surrounded by the others but not captured and which are not alive at the end of the game should be removed. A group is considered alive if it has two "eyes". An eye is a blank space completely surrounded by one color. Beginners should play the game out if there is doubt about what is alive and what isn't. --------------------- | Playing Tele Go | --------------------- 1. Select the Go Icon 2. One player should dial the other by selecting Dial from the Modem menu. A requester will appear, and he should type in his opponents phone number, and hit return. 3. Messages can be transmitted at this point by typing a short string and hitting return. Decide who will take what color. 4. Choose your color from the Play Menu. 5. The White Player puts his pointer on the intersection he desires and clicks the left mouse button. It will place the stone at the intersection, and remove any captured stones. If it is invalid then a short beep will be heard. It will then transmit your move to the other player. If the other computer can't respond you will have to move again. 6. Once the Black Player recieves the message he can go, and play alternates. 7. At any time text may be entered and transmitted, by either player. 8. The Pass box may be selected instead of clicking on an intersection. 0. To prepare for a new game use the End option. 11. To save the current game to "gosave.log" in the current directory use the save option. 12. To load the game from "gosave.log" in the current directory use the load option. 13. No activity is allowed while the message is being transmitted (either text or a move). Note on Pointer --------------- The pointer will appear as a arrow if it is your turn. It will appear as a phone when data is being transmitted. It will appear as clock when it is your opponents turn. Note on Transmitting data ------------------------- Occasionally you may see a "Transmit - Failed" message. This means that you tried to send a message but it wasn't received correctly. This could be because of noise on the line, or something. If it continues to give this message (appx. every 3 seconds), then something more serious is wrong. Hit the 'ESC' key, and save the game. You may then restart the saved game when the problem is resolved. WARNING! -------- This program needs a lot of stack space at least 16000. This has been set up if you are accessing it through the icon provided, but you must use the stack command if you are calling this program through the CLI.
