The butterfly is a true 3D object, as are all the elements in the picture.
The sphere is a GLASS sphere, with true refraction of light.  The posts
are fused quartz with a very rough surface.  The posts were created as
CLEAR (white-transparent) quartz, due to the refraction of light within
the posts, the color spectrum can be seen.
The butterfly is a Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio Glaucus)
