The .45-70 is certainly a record-breaker.  It 
is the oldest cartridge to still be chambered in 
modern rifles and, along with the .44-40, to 
still be listed in the factory commercial 
ammunition tables.  In other words, you can still 
buy it over 120 years after it was introduced!

    Considerable difference exists in the ability 
of the older vs. newer .45-70 rifles to handle 
heavy charges.  Handloaders should be mindful to 
insure that their heavy loads are restricted to 
arms that are capable.

    In a modern rifle, the .45-70 is capable of 
taking any North American game.  Bullet weights 
range from around 300 to 500 grains.
