Designed specifically for the M1 Carbine, a 
weapon intended as an effective field replacement 
for the .45 M1911A1 Semi-Auto pistol, the .30 M1 
Carbine cartridge was effectively used by U.S. 
troops in W.W. II.  However, compared with the 
pistol, the carbine was viewed as large and 
bulky, and as a longarm, it was considered far 
less desirable to carry into combat than the more 
powerful M1 Garand (.30-06).

    The firearm and cartridge became popular 
after the war years, creating a market for many 
civilian models.  It's use as a hunting round is 
limited however, as deer-sized game are better 
left for more powerful cartridges.  On the other 
hand, it's retort is not large and the recoil 
tolerable by almost anyone.  It is a very 
pleasant cartridge for beginners to practice 
with.
