You should backup this disk, before you even use SuperLeague, just in case something goes badly wrong with the file structure. (Accidental deletion of important files or read/write errors in particular) Ensure that your machine meets the necessary @{" System Requirements " link SPEC} to load SuperLeagueV3.51. @{b}Important Note regarding usage :@{ub} Due to the comprehensive amount of data stored by SuperLeague V3.51, a delicate data storage structure exists for each league processed. This entails 7 major files for EVERY league you set up, in different directories. If just one of those files were to go wrong in any way (Accidental deletion, read/write errors etc) then it is very likely that that league becomes unusable. I should point out that if you go about TRYING to crash this software by messing about with the data files, or their contents then you may well succeed. SuperLeague will not crash in circumstances in which the user is behaving responsibly and does not manipulate the @{"System Datafiles " link DATAFILES} from the shell/Cli. @endnode @node SPEC " SuperLeagueV3.51 System Requirements " @{b}SuperLeague V3.51 system requirements :@{ub} Computer : Any Amiga (A500,A500+,A600,A1200,A2000,A3000,A4000) O/S Version : Kickstart 1.3 or upwards Memory : 1MB minimum Drives : Any number of drives @{b}Backward-Compatability with Previous releases of Superleague :@{ub} SuperLeague V3.51 files are compatable with all previous @{"versions" link HISTORY} of the program (V3.40,V3.41,V3.50 for example). If problems persist you should @{"contact the author" link CONTACT} , Edward Burcher. @endnode @node UPTODATE " SuperLeagueV3.51 Guide - Bringing a League up to date " Due to the comprehensive amount of data stored by SuperLeagueV3.51, going from a blank table to an up to date one if the league season is part way through is a problem. You have 2 options : (i) Input ALL the results up to that point in the season. This is OK if it has only been a couple of weeks since the start of the season and you have records of all the results, but in the middle of a season it will be impractical not to say masochistic. (ii) Forget about the season up to this point, as far as the Favourite Team Features are concerned at least and just alter the table (I will get to how you do this in a moment). This will mean that the table will be correct but SuperLeague will not have a record of the favourite team's results up to this point or Goal Timings etc., so features like the position graph and form guide will not have any data to work with up to that point of the season. In effect, as far as those features are concerned, the season will have just started but the table information will be correct. Altering the Table Data : Select @{"Preferences" link PREFS} from the first menu and click on the @{b}'Special Team Data Correction Facility'@{ub} option. Now systematically go through each team, updating it's data. When you are finished, return to the main prefs screen, select @{b}'Use'@{ub} and then save the league using the @{"Save League" link SAVE} option from the first menu. @endnode @node DATAFILES " Technical Information - System Datafiles " This is provided so that if you get into difficulties, it may help to understand what is going on underneath the surface. There are 7 files comprising each league, and it is important that they all work in harmony - and in particular that the main League Data File (No. 1) which stores the table data stays in sync with all the Favourite team data files (No.s 2 3 4 5 6) that store all the extra data which allows features such as the position graph and goal timings bar chart. This means that you must not forget to use the @{"Save League" link SAVE} option after entering some results. The files will become "out of sync" if you do not. If you enter a favourite team result, the extra data you input about scorers and so on is saved automatically to the data files (No.s 2 3 4 5 6). So, if you were to forget to save before you quit, then the League Data File on disk would still contain the old league data, but the new scorers/goal timings information would have been saved to the data files. Hence the files would be out of sync because, having realised your error, if you tried to enter the results again, the extra data would be saved AGAIN to the data files and so they would be inaccurate. If you make this error there are 2 ways to correct it : (i) Use the 'Special Data Correction Facility' and edit the information for every team to the most recent table information, so that the league table will be in sync with the data files. SAVE from the main menu to make these changes permanent. This can be a tedious method and you may find it quicker to use a text editor on the league data file (No 1) as long as you know what you are doing. (ii) Similarly you could use a text editor to chop the relavent data off the end of the Favourite team data files (those found in the Sysfiles directory) pertaining to this league. Then the data may be reentered as normal. As you can see, it can be a tricky task rectifying an error like this so don't make it ! 1) The League Data File (stored in directory 'Leagues') i) What it does Stores Team names, number of games won/drawn/lost etc Also stores the names of the system files associated with that league. Also stores selected preferences data particular to this league : How many points for a win etc. ii) When it is accessed Whenever you select @{"Load" link LOAD} or @{"Save" link LOAD} options from menu one. Because this file contains the pathnames of the other files associated with the league it contains it is always the first file loaded. iii) Extra info Because it contains some preferences settings, this information will supersede the main preferences settings. 2) The Favourite Team Results Text file (stored in 'SysFiles' directory) i) What it does Stores the results of the favourite team in ASCII form, for displaying in the @{"Favourite team results" link FAVE} option of menu 3 ii) When it is accessed Loading from it takes place on selection of the @{"Favourite team results" link FAVE} menu option. Saving to it occurs directly after specialist data has been entered from the @{"Enter Results" link ENTER} screen, after a result of the favourite team has been entered. 3) The Favourite Team Results Data file (stored in 'SysFiles' directory) i) What it does Stores the results of the favourite team in short form, for processing the home/away records of the favourite team quickly ii) When it is Accessed At the same times as no.2 above 4) The Favourite Team Goal Timings Data file(stored in 'SysFiles' directory) i) What it does Stores the timings of the goals scored by the selected favourite team. ii) When it is accessed Saved after specialist data entry from @{"Enter Results" link ENTER} (as in no.s 2 & 3 above) Loading from it takes place on selection of the @{"Goal Timings Graph" link BARCHART} option from menu 3. 5) The Form Guide Data file (stored in 'Sysfiles' directory) i) What it does Stores the last five results of the selected favourite team. ii) When it is accessed Saved after specialist data entry from @{"Enter Results" link ENTER} (as in no.s 2,3 & 4 above) Loading from it occurs on selection of the @{"Favourite Team Form" link FORM} option from menu 3. 6) The League Position Data file (stored in 'Sysfiles' directory) i) What it does Stores the position of the favourite team after each result. ii) When it is accessed Saved to after specialist data entry from @{"Enter Results" link ENTER} (as in no.s 2,3,4 & 5 above) Loading from it occurs on selection of the @{"Position Graph" link GRAPH} option of menu 3. 7) The Cup Results file (stored in 'Cups' directory) i) What it does Stores all cup results for the Favourite team. ii) When it is accessed On selection of @{"Enter Cup Results" link CUP} option from menu 2 Any disk access while in the Cup Results section of the program will be to or from this file iii) Extra info This file and indeed the Cup results section is effectively independent of the rest of the program and data. In such cases please @{"contact me" link CONTACT}, so that I can correct errors in future releases. Also write if you have any bug reports or suggestions for new features in future releases. @{b}Important Notes:@{ub} SuperLeague can handle leagues with up to 26 teams using either a two or three points for a win system. This is sufficient to maintain most football leagues - Certainly the FA Premier, Football League 1,2 and 3 and Scotland / Italy / France etc. In each Table, One team can be picked as the 'Favourites'. This means you can follow your team via SuperLeague, as the selected 'Favourite' has extra features including Goals Chart, Seasons Results (Including Scorers and Goal Timings). The Filenames handling these extra features are held in the 'SysFiles' directory on disk and should not be relocated. Similarly, The SL3Prefs.data file contains the saved preferences, and is always held in the main SuperLeague drawer. This file MUST NOT be renamed or moved. @{b}Hard disk@{ub} users should click @{"here" link HARDDISK} for installation info. @{b}WARNING :@{ub} SuperLeague requires @{b}1MB AT LEAST@{ub}, and although the current version should run from Workbench even when the memory-consuming printer software is active, you may need to run it from CLI without workbench being open if memory is causing problems. Problems should not be experienced for machines with more than 1Mb of memory but on a 1Mb amiga when using the printer with SuperLeague, memory is tight and you should close all other applications to avoid problems. @{b}Procedure for CLI usage :@{ub} 1) Reboot your Workbench disk 2) Once the AmigaDOS window appears, press CTRL-D to interrupt the script execution. 3) Move to the Superleague directory, using 'cd'. Eg. If the SuperLeague disk is in an external drive df1: you would type cd df1:SuperLeague3.51 to change to the main SuperLeague directory. 4) Type 'execute "SuperLeague V3.51"' to execute the startup script for SuperLeague3.51 (include the speech marks(") but not the apostrophes(')) @endnode @node HARDDISK "Hard Disk Installation Procedure" First, let me say that as I do not own a hard disk (lack of funds :-( - but if anyone is willing to donate one...... ;-) ) so the perfection of a HD installable version of SL3.51 has been tricky. I have tried to simulate it by creating a portable version on floppy which can be moved into different directories and still work, and this is what you are using. N.B SuperLeagueV3.51 and its vastly superior sucessor V4.01 are both HD installable, but previous releases to V3.51 are not HD installable. This means that you cannot install V3.40, V3.41 or V3.50 to hard disk. @{b}Installation Procedure :@{ub} 1) From Workbench, open the SuperLeague disk icon. Drag the drawer icon "SuperLeague3.51" into the desired directory in your HD directory structure All the files will then be copied across. 2) That's it !! Note that there appears to be some incompatability between different versions of IconX. My 1.3 version appears not to have worked on an A1200 under 3.0 so I have made the icon paths refer to your c:iconx file. This may mean that single drive users have a bit more swapping than they might like, but with a bit of CLI knowledge and a bit of messing with the info menu option from workbench, this could be improved. Note also that the script which launches SuperLeague via IconX reassigns your fonts: assign. Unfortunately I could not think of a way to reassign it to what it previously was at the end of the program, so it would be a good idea to append the script file "SuperLeague V3.51" with a line to reassign it. e.g if your usual font path is sys:fonts/ (as most people's is) then just add the line :- @{b}assign fonts: sys:fonts/@{ub} to the end of the script file. @endnode @node LOAD "Instructions - Load League" As it says just loads the league, along with assorted prefs specific to that league , i.e. Favourite team in that league etc. If the filename does not exist it will ask for another. Simply select Cancel if you have chosen the option by mistake. @endnode @node SAVE "Instructions - Save League" Self Explanatory. Simply type in a filename or select an existing file to overwrite. Alternatively, you can Cancel. NOTE: An ASCII Save Occurs Automatically to the SuperLeague3.51 directory, with the name being the League title with '.asc' bolted on. e.g 'FA Carling Premiership.Asc' would appear. @endnode @node PREFS "Instructions - Preferences" Pretty much Self Explanatory, although it should be pointed out that the option 'Use' on the title bar will NOT Cancel changes made. Save will save the prefs as they appear at that time, then exit to main menu ; Use will Exit to Main Menu USING the settings as they have been altered. A quick summary of the options available here : @{b}Ranking system toggle :@{ub} Choose between using goal-difference to separate teams on the same points or just goals-scored (as in the Football League) @{b}Points for a win toggle :@{ub} 3pts (England) or 2pts (Europe) League Name, Cup filename for this league, User-defined cup, Number of teams are all text gadgets which you can alter if you wish to change that option. @{b}System Files Reset Facility :@{ub} Primary use is to @{b}INITIALIZE@{ub} files for a newly created league (See the 'Creating a new League' @{"Tutorial" link TUTORIAL}) but if your existing files get in a real mess and won't work and you want to start again with empty, but initialized files then choose this option. @{b}Special Correcting Facility :@{ub} Allows you to correct the data in the league table. Unfortunately, this won't alter the data in the main database which stores all the results so either a) Don't make mistakes or b) If you do, then you can tweak the table here but not the results stored in the database. This feature is particularly useful if a team is deducted points for some misdemeanor - but you can't have negative points (Hello Spurs fans) for some reason (this is a feature* of AMOS Interface - not my fault) * = Bug @{b}Change System Filenames :@{ub} More text gadgets to alter the system filenames. Make sure you know what you are doing before you change these (See 'Creating a new league' @{"Tutorial" link TUTORIAL}) and be careful with the filepaths. @{b}Choose Favourite Team :@{ub} Pick your favourite team in this league and confirm it. Easy. @endnode @node PROPTS "Instructions - Print Options Menu Item" Allows Printing Of Any League Table Including the One In Memory or one from an ASCII file (See Save Above). Also allows Printing of the Favourite team Season Results File. @endnode @node ABOUT "Instructions - About Menu Option" Information about SuperLeague. @endnode @node QUIT "Instructions - Quit" Obviously, Quits the system . Requires Confirmation by a Press of 'q' on the keyboard. @endnode @node ENTER "Instructions - Enter Results" Input League Results using a point-and-click interface. Simply select the teams, then input the scores and confirm selection. N.B. When A Result is input featuring the team selected as 'Favourite', SuperLeague will ask for additional information about scorers and goal timings. This Information will then be saved to files. Try to Input All the Weekends Results AT ONCE. This will lead to the correct league position being calculated. Obviously if you were to only enter the result of your favourite team, and then enter the other results later, a false position would have been stored in the System 'Position' file since the favourite team would have played a game more @{b}AT THE TIME@{ub} the position was calculated. Just to Clarify - The new league position of the favourite team is calculated and stored when you select EXIT on the Enter Results Screen. @endnode @node CUP "Instructions - Enter Cup Results Menu Item" This is to keep up the cup results record of the 'favourite' team assigned to a particular league. All features are self explanatory. It should be noted that if the Cup File as defined in preferences does not exist and this option is selected then you will be given the option to initialise that filename. If you do this you will be returned to the menu screen. Then simply Re-Select the Enter Cup Results option and all will be well. You should not enter results if you do not wish them to remain on file. It is not possible to erase stored data from SuperLeague once it has been confirmed and saved to disk. @endnode @node NAMES "Instructions - Change Team Names" Self-Explanatory. The Teams names are not saved by themselves, but as part of a league table. Hence if you change the team names and wish them to remain when you reload, you will have to save the current league table which will store the new names along with it. To automatically load it on bootup, the appropriate Prefs Option will have to be set to the particular filename you save under. Default names are those of the 1994-5 FA Premier. @endnode @node TABLE "Instructions - View League Table" Shows the Current Table in Memory. Clicking on the title bar reveals the points for a win in this league and the goal difference ranking system. i.e In the Football League goal-difference is irrelavent, it is only based on goals scored. A further option is just for interest - to see what the table would be under the 'other' points for a win system. In other words, if you have a 3 points-for-a-win league in memory then the 'Other Table' option would show you what the table would look like under a 2 points for a win system. @endnode @node FAVE "Instructions - Favourite Team Results" Shows the Season Results file, and the home and away records for the season. The Results list is operated by a slider, but this is automatically scaled so that if you click on the slider bar ABOVE or BELOW the 'position box' (red blob) then it will move the display five lines up or down - ie. 1 match worth up or down. This keeps things neat as you don't have the odd scorers name hanging around at the top of the window without being able to see which match he scored in. @endnode @node FORM "Instructions - Favourite Team Form" Shows the last 5 results of the favourite team and calculates a form rating based on these. @endnode @node GRAPH "Instructions - View Position Graph" Draws a graph to show the fluctuations the favourite team's league position over the season. @endnode @node BARCHART "Instructions - View Goal Timings Chart" Creates a Bar Chart to show the number of goals your favourite team has scored in various time intervals in their games. @endnode @node ATTDEF "Instructions - Attacking / Defending Chart" Shows a list of the top attacking and defensive teams in the league currently in memory. @endnode @node AV "Instructions - View Averages" Shows several ranked lists of the current teams in memory based on goals per game (both scored and conceded) and points per game. @endnode @node GD "Instructions - Goal difference List" Shows a ranked list of the best and worst goal differences of the teams in the current league in memory. @endnode @node CLOCK "Instructions - Clock and Date" Assuming you have an Internal clock in your Amiga, and the time has been correctly set from it in the startup-sequence via Setclock , then this menu item keeps track of the current time. It will not be updated while you watch, but every time the menu bar is called up by pressing the right mouse button, it will show the latest time. @endnode @node HISTORY "SuperLeague History" @{b}V3.51@{ub} - PD A minor update to V3.50, the only difference being that this version is @{b}Hard Disk@{ub} installable. All previous releases V3.40,V3.41,V3.50 are unfortunately NOT hard disk installable. @{b}V3.50@{ub} - PD Basically this version is a bug fix to plug the gap between the previous release SuperLeague V3.41 and the registered version of the program - SuperLeague V3.51. Bugs fixed : 1) Print routines now Work !!!!!! I had no printer access before and could not test the print routines but now have, and have corrected the bugs that I found. 2) Scorers data storage on the Season Results file now works without hiccups. Previously someones name might appear twice when it shouldn't have. 3) Cup Results Bug. Previously on viewing the FA Cup results (say) and exiting to view the Coca-Cola results (say), some of the FA cup results would be left on the display. This is now corrected. 4) Saved ASCII file now ranked properly. @{b}V3.41@{ub} - PD A minor update to 3.40 but I can't remember what the difference was !! @{b}V3.40@{ub} - PD The first public release, first sent to NBS in Nov 93 and uploaded to the Aminet in February 94. It worked..... just not very well : Print routines didn't work :( and like all versions prior to v3.51 it was not HD installable. Compared to V3.51 it's a bit crap really. Still everyone's got to start somewhere. @{b}V2.20@{ub} - NEVER RELEASED Written in AmigaBASIC (Look, I'd just got my Amiga and it was better than Spectrum basic, OK ?) and it featured menus as a front end to version 1 plus a few minor statistics features. @{b}V1.00@{ub} - NEVER IN DANGER OF BEING RELEASED Also written in AmigaBASIC about 5 days before starting on version 2 it was entirely keyboard operated. And not very good. Still it spawned quite a monster as anyone who has read this far will testify. @endnode @node TUTORIAL "Creating a new league : A Tutorial" Already provided on the disk are files sufficient to allow you to immediately start maintaining your own FA Carling Premiership League Table. However, if you are Scottish , Welsh , Estonian...... etc you will probably wish to ignore this and create your own new League. This document traces this through step-by-step in order for you to get acquainted with the method involved. When you first boot-up, the 'FA Carling Premiership' will already be loaded - at first it is blank. If you wish to get it up to date you can use the 'Special Team Data Correcting Facility' from the @{"Preferences" link PREFS} screen. The default 'Favourite Team' is @{"Leeds United" link LEEDS} (Because they're the best... I think I'll just say hello to the Internet Whites at this point ;-) ) but you can easily change this, also from the Preferences Screen, by selecting the @{b}'Select Favourite Team'@{ub} Option. When you have things as you want them, just save the league to disk by using the Save League option from the first menu on the main screen. This is wise at any time you make an alteration to the Preferences which is particular to any league, since many Preferences settings are saved along with league data. So even if you haven't changed the actual team data by inputting any new results, but you have changed the name of one of the System files pertaining to that table, you should save the league to ensure that change is made permanent. This applies to any league. @{b}Making a Different League Appear Automatically on Bootup :@{ub} Simply input the name of the file, into the @{b}'League Table to load on Bootup'@{ub} option in the Preferences screen, including the path which will usually be 'Leagues/' since by default this is where league files are saved. You should then save preferences settings by clicking on the save option in the top right-hand corner of the Preferences screen. @{b}Creating a Brand New League :@{ub} The following example is for creating Endsleigh Division 2 from when you first bootup : 1) The default league in memory is the FA Carling Premiership which only has 22 teams while Division 2 has 24 teams. Hence you should first select Preferences from the first menu, and change the @{b}'Number of Teams'@{ub} input zone to 24. Also change the text in the @{b}'League Name'@{ub} box to "Endsleigh Division 2" or something similar. Then select @{b}'Use'@{ub} to return to the menu screen. 2) Select @{b}'Change Team Names'@{ub} from the Second Menu. Change all the team names to all those in Division 2. Note that two boxes should have 'No Name' written in them. These are the two extra which did not exist in the Premiership. You should rename all the boxes them to the relavent teams from Division 2. Then select Exit. 3) Decide which Team in Division 2 is your favourite, whose Results you wish to keep track of. Now Select Preferences again. 4) Select @{b}'Choose Favourite Team'@{ub} and click on the relavent team which you just decided on. Now Click on the @{b}'Confirm List Selection'@{ub} button. If your selection was correct, select the @{b}'OK'@{ub} box. Now select Exit to return to the main prefs screen. 5) The Football League do not employ the goal-difference system to separate teams on the same points, but look at goals scored only. Hence change the @{b}'Goal difference Ranking System'@{ub} button so that it reads @{b}'Gs For'@{ub}(Goals For) 6) Change the @{b}'Default Cup Data File'@{ub} filename to something relavent to your team. For instance, if you support Stockport County you could have the filename 'SuperLeague:Cups/94_95.SCFC'. Personalisation like this is recommended to avoid clashes between the cup files for different leagues. 7) Similarly we need to change the System Data files for this league to something specifically identifiable and unique to this league to avoid clashes. Select @{b}'Change System Data Filenames'@{ub}. Now Change all the filenames which read SysFiles/PremXXXXX.data according to which file is doing what. It makes sense to change them all from SysFiles/PremXXXXX.data to SysFiles/Div2XXXXX.data. (For Division 2) So for instance, Change the filename for the goal timings data from 'SysFiles/PremTimings.data' to 'SysFiles/Div2Timings.data' and repeat this for the rest. Then select exit to return to the main prefs screen. 9) Now we need to initialize these new files so they are ready for use. Select the @{b}'System File Reset Facility'@{ub} button. Click on the upper @{b}'Reset/Initialize System Files'@{ub} button. When disk activity has finished, click on @{b}Exit@{ub} to return to the main Prefs screen. 10) Click on @{b}Save@{ub}, to save the new settings and to return to the Main Menu 11) Now we must save the league, even though it is empty - mainly to preserve some of the Division 2 specific preferences data we have entered. To do this , select @{b}'Save League'@{ub} from the first menu. Input a relavent filename such as @{b}'Division2'@{ub} and click on @{b}'OK'@{ub}. This will make the league perfectly usuable. Select @{b}'View League Table'@{ub} from Menu 3 to see the table. To enter results , select @{b}'Enter League Results'@{ub} from Menu 2. Make sure you know who scored for your favourite team and in what minute before you enter one of their results !! 12) (Optional) If you want to update the league to the current real life position, you have 2 options. First , you could enter every result from the start :( (Not a good idea unless you are masochistic) More likely though, you won't want to do this, so you can select the @{b}'Special Team Data Correcting Facility'@{ub} from the Prefs Screen, and alter all the team data. This of course will mean that your System files will not carry the results of all the teams for the season that had passed before you started using SuperLeague, and so you will not have a totally comprehensive league position graph or season results facility, and nor will the results and scorers of all your favourite team's results be present on file. When you have finished updating, don't forget to save. @{b}VERY IMPORTANT NEVER NEVER NEVER forget to save the league after entering any results!!@{ub} If you do forget, and find yourself re-entering the result, the result data will be saved @{b}TWICE@{ub} to the relavent system files and the result will appear twice in the form guide, Season Results List, and the goal timings will be counted twice. @endnode @node LEEDS "Leeds United AFC" Bloody good when they play well and damn frustrating when they don't. Things are looking up though as we have a young team in the right places which will improve and should be in contention in the next few seasons. With the best right-back in Eur...well maybe soon but certainly the UK in Gary Kelly and one of the most underrated emerging young central defenders in David Wetherall plus the electric Rodney "Goal of the Season" Wallace and the continuing brilliance of Gary McAllister, Tony Dorigo, Gary Speed and John Lukic ;-) we will take some stopping. We finished 5th last year, so if Brian Deane scores some goals this time we'll take the Premiership by storm. @endnode @node COPY "Copyright Information for SuperLeague V3.51" SuperLeague was written 1992-3 by Edward A G Burcher. It combines bug fixes from V3.51 with many extra features, enabled by an entirely new method of storing most of the data. New Features : 1) Brand new internal database structure allowing all the results for all the teams from an entire season to be stored in memory, along with other info such as league position after every match etc. 2) New "Team Ratings", allows the user to 'weight' teams according to their strength/quality. This is then used in match prediction / form calculation. 3) New Home/Away Breakdown league table. 4) Comprehensive Team Statistics page for every team. Accessed from either league table option. 5) Rewritten Form Guide, with enhanced form calculation based on all possible factors for every team. 6) Match Prediction (Pools) feature which takes into account all available data in order to predict any match. 7) Rewritten Position-Graph feature, which now allows the user to plot a graph of league position for EVERY team in the league. 8) New Season Results feature which allows the user to view all the results for ANY and EVERY team in the league for the entire season. 9) League Overview Statistics 10) Extra Viewing Facilities for the latest results. 11) Print feature on most of the above options 12) Scottish leagues support : Option to toggle between playing each team twice or four times in a season.
