All changes concerning the program, the catalogs or the documentation have to be allowed by the author. - AddressManager may be copied and used freely. If you think that AddressManager is a good program and its development should be continued, you can send me some money, a small gift, a letter or a postcard. In this way you can show me, that there are people using this software, and I will be more motivated to keep on developing it. (see also @{"CREDITS" link credits}) - Commercial usage or distribution without a licence from the author is not allowed! - AddressManager may be distributed on Public-Domain-Disks and through E-Mail if the program and all files of the distribution-package are included and not changed. - The program and all files which belong to it were developed and tested very carefully, so you should have no problems using them. But anyway: THE AUTHOR CAN NOT BE MADE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE ON YOUR SOFT- OR HARDWARE CAUSED BY ADDRESSMANAGER AND THE FILES COMING ALONG WITH IT. @endnode @node what "WHAT IS ADDRESSMANAGER" AddressManager is an utility which makes it easier to you to master all the information you have about your friends, familly, business partners or pets. It is not a professional Databanking-System but it has a lot of advantages if you just want to manage names, telephone numbers etc. of some people: - AddressManager is very easy to use.You can learn all the functions in a few minutes. - AddressManager needs WB 2.0 or higher, therefore: - it uses things like AppIcons and AppWindows - if you own WB 2.1 or higher you can use it in English or German language - it looks quite good - AddressManager is PD. You can copy and use it freely. If you want to "reward" me for my work and increase my motivation to keep on developing this software, you can send me something nice (letters, postcards, money, gifts etc.). (see also @{"CREDITS" link credits}) @endnode @node install "INSTALLATION" To use AddressManager you need an AMIGA with Kickstart/WB 2.0 or better. AddressManager is rather compact, so you will have no problems using it with only one floppy, but a second one or a harddisk are of course also useful. If you have the Reqtools.library in your system,it will be used automatically unless you force AM not to use it (see also @{"CONFIGURATION" link config}). If you own the INSTALLER you can use one of the scripts you can find in the INSTALL-Directory. It will do all the work for you. @{"WB 2.0-installation " link wb20} @{"WB 2.1 and better installation" link wb21} @endnode @node wb20 "WB 2.0" Just copy the AddressManager program and, if you want, the documentation to some disk. It does not need any special libraries or devices except the usual ones. The program will run in English only. @endnode @node wb21 "WB 2.1 and better" Do the same as described for WB 2.0, but if you want to use the program in German language you should also: - have the usual locale-files (locale.library, german language-file etc.) - copy the file ADDRESSMANAGER.CATALOG from ADDRESSM2.1/CATALOGS/DEUTSCH to LOCALE:CATALOGS/DEUTSCH AddressManager will only run in German language if you have this language among you prefered languages (LOCALE-Prefs) BEFORE English. @endnode @node config "CONFIGURATION" There are 3 methods of configuring AddressManager: - from the Workbench: - AddressManager uses the WB-Screen, and so all prefrences of the WB concerning resolution, colors, printer... will be taken over - using the TOOLTYPES: To change the TOOLTYPES just click on the icon of AddressManager once and call INFORMATION from the ICON-Menu of the WB. Now you can change the TOOLTYPES: - DONOTWAIT should always be there. If you have AddressManager in your WBStartup-drawer so that it is started everytime you boot, this tooltype makes the WB not wait for the programs answer. - POP_UP defines if the AddressManager window should be opened immidiately after starting or not. If it is set to NO the program will only create an AppIcon and wait until you activate it. This is useful if you want to have the program in the WBStartup-drawer. Otherwise this tooltype should be set to YES. - STD_MSGREQ enforces standard requesters for messages - ALS_FILEREQ enforces ALS-filerequesters - using the built-in-prefs.More about this in the chapter @{"USING ADDRESSMANAGER" link use} @endnode @node use "USING ADDRESSMANAGER" Starting: - from the WB: Just double-click the AddressManager-icon to start the program. If you want to load some data at the same time just click the AM-icon once, press SHIFT and double-click the icon of the data-file. - from the Shell: AddressManager [FILE] FILE can be some data-file which you want to be loaded together with AM. Now you have started AddressManager. First some important information: - AddressManager creates an AppIcon on the WB. If you double-click it the AM-Window will come to front. You can also drop an data-file-icon on the AppIcon to load it. - AddressManager creates an AppWindow. Just drop an file into it, and it will be loaded. - The number of people you can manage is only limited by the amount of free memory. - The name and the surname of every person will appear in the list on left of the window. Just click on a name, and the corresponding data will appear in the string gadgets on the right side of the window. - All gadgets have one underlined character. Just press the corresponding key to activate the gadget. The list of entries plays a special role here: - press just to activate the next person - press - to activate the previous person Now some information about the functions of the gadgets, menus and so on: @{"CLOSE-gadget " link close} @{"ZOOM-gadget " link zoom} @{"NAME,SURNAME... " link name} @{"EXISTING ENTRIES" link exist} @{"NEW PERSON " link new} @{"DELETE " link del} @{"UPDATE " link take} @{"SAVE/LOAD " link save} @{"PRINT " link print} @{"PREFS " link prefs} @{"NEW " link new} @{"CLEAR " link cl} @{"PARAMETERS " link para} @{"SEARCH " link search} @{"GO ON " link goon} @{"MENUS " link menus} @endnode @node new "NEW" Clears all. @endnode @node cl "CLEAR" Clears the String-gadgets. @endnode @node para "PARAMETERS" After activating this function a new window appears. Here you can type in the criterion after which a person will be searched. You can use all joker- signs like "#?" which you already know from the Shell. The searching algorythm does not make any difference between normal and capital letters. After finishing this just click on OK!. You can also switch between the gadgets by pressing TAB (or RETURN) or SHIFT-TAB. @endnode @node search "SEARCH" Now the list of people will be serched through from the beginning, and if a person fits all the conditions it will be activated and shown in the string -gadgets. Otherwise the message "Not found!" will be displayed. @endnode @node goon "GO ON" This function continues searching from the position where it was last stopped under the same conditions. If you have not called the @{"SEARCH" link search}- function before, or if the whole list has already been searched this gadget shows no effects. @endnode @node menus "Using of the menus" Some important functions can be called from the menu too. There are also functions only available from the menu: - ABOUT Shows some information about the program. - SAVE Saves under the old file-name without opening a requester. @endnode @node print "PRINT" After calling this function an requester will appear in which you can if you want to print all the data, only the activated person or nothing. More about the actual printing is to be found under @{"PREFS" link prefs}. Additionally there is a possibilty of printing on envelopes. If you use this function only the name, the address and if you want also the country will be printed. The auto-centering of your printer will be activated automatically. @endnode @node prefs "PREFS" The program can be configured here: - DIRECTORY Here you can type in your working-directory. If possible it will be activated everytime you open a file-requester until you have selected some other directory there. The short cut has two meanings:`D` activates the string-gadget, `d` opens a requester in which you can select the directory. - THAT WILL BE PRINTED: You can select an item in the listview-gadget and then : - PRINT if selected the active item will be printed - BOLD if selected the active item will be printed bold - SEPARATE (only if HORIZONTAL activated) : - if activated the item will be separated from the next one by a line, otherwise by a space - CHARS (only if HORIZONTAL activated) : here you can say how many chars of the complete line belong to this item. The sum of all items and separations cannot be higher then the lenght of a line of the printer EXAMPLE: Your PRINTER-Prefs look like this: Pica (10cpi) Left margin: 2 Right Margin: 2 So there are 76 columns left for AddressManager-output. Surname First name | Street City | Telephone ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xxxx Xxxxx | Xxxxx Xxx x XXXXX XXXXXX | XXXX/XXXXXX Yyyyyyy Yyyyyy | YYYY Yyy y YYYYY Yyyyyyyy | YYYYY/YYY 10 10 ^ 20 15 ^ 12 | | Separation Separation To get this output you have t o deactivate PRINT in BIRTHDAY, COUNTRY and in REMARKS. The values of CHARS should be: Surname : 10 Firts name : 10 Street : 20 City : 15 Telephone : 12 Also the SEPARATE-gadget should be activated in FIRTS NAME and CITY. - If HEADERS is activated each line or column begins with NAME:, REMARKS: etc. - SURNAME FIRST makes the program print the surname before the first name - ONLY EXISTING... (only in VERTICAL-mode) makes the program NOT print empty lines like Remarks: - SAVE The new prefs will be taken over and saved in your ENV: and ENVARC: directories. Therefore they will be automatically activated next time you boot. - SAVE AS... You can save the configuration somewhere to use it later - LOAD Loads a saved configuration - USE The new prefs will be taken over and saved in your ENV:-directory. So it will be valid until you turn off your computer or reboot. - CANCEL The new prefs will neither be taken over nor saved. @endnode @node close "CLOSE-Gadget" Ends the program after asking if you really want to end it and giving you a chance to save your data. @endnode @node zoom "ZOOM-Gadget" This gadget iconifies the program. The window is closed, but the data is still in the memory. You can re-open the window by activating the AppIcon, which is still on the WB. @endnode @node name "SURNAME,NAME..." In these gadgets you just type in the data. You can jump from one gadget to an other with TAB (or RETURN) or SHIFT-TAB. If you click on a person in the list the corresponding data will also appear here. If you leave the REMARKS-Gadget, you can press RETURN to add the person in the string-gadgets to your list, clear the gadgets and activate the first gadget automatically. This makes it possible to enter several persons in a row very quickly. @endnode @node exist "EXISTING ENTRIES" The names and surnames of all people can be seen here. Just click on them to recall the data. @endnode @node new "NEW PERSON" After you have typed all the data about a person into the string-gadgets you have to use this function to take it over into the actual list of people. The new entry will be inserted into the alphabetical list. @endnode @node del "DELETE" The last activated entry will be deleted. The entry above it will be activated automatically. @endnode @node take "TAKE OVER" If you want to change an existing entry, just recall it by clicking on it in the list of existing entries. Then change the contents of the string- gadgets. When you are satisfied with the new contents of these gadgets, just use TAKE OVER. The data in the actual list will be updated now. @endnode @node save "SAVE/LOAD" I suppose you already know what these functions are for! After calling one of them an ASL- or REQTOOLS-filerequester appears. Here you can select a directory and a file to load or save. If you use the REQTOOLS.LIBRARY you have also the possibility of creating a new directory in the SAVE-Requester. Just type the name of a directory that does not exist yet,and the requester will ask you if you want to create it. Before loading data AM checks if the previous data was changed since it was saved for the last time. If it was you have a last chance to save it now. Every saved file automatically gets an icon. If you want to load a file, and there is already some data in your list, you can choose, whether you want to add the new data to the old or to replace the old by the new. The saving-format is rather compact, so that you will need less place on disk the in memory for the same amount of data.If you want more information about this format because you e.g. want to make your own Manager-program compatible to AddressManager just write me. @endnode @node history "HISTORY" - AddressManager V1.0 (07.11.1993) is the first publicated version. - AddressManager V1.1 (20.11.1993) : - if you leave any string-gadget (in the main window or in the SEARCH- window) by pressing RETURN the next gadget will be activated (suggested by Thortsen Schulz) - AddressManager V1.2 (10.02.1994) : - fixed a bug: the PUBLICSCREEN is now correctly unlocked after leaving the program - a lot of small changes in the user interface: - all windows are redesigned. They take less place on the screen now, so they even can be opened on a 640*200 screen (NTSC HighRes normal size) - ABOUT, PREFS and SEARCH windows are centered in the main window - if you use REQTOOLS.LIBRARY the requesters are better now: - all requesters are centered in the main window - the SAVE-Requester allows you to create new directories - AddressManager V1.3 (13.03.1994) : - the stack is now allocated automatically - removed an unnecessary string from the main window - changed the handling of the string gadgets in the main window,so that you can enter several persons in a row much faster now (see also @{"USING..." link name}) - AddressManager V1.4 (29.05.1994) - you can use a requester to select your prefered directory in the prefs - OS 3.0`s NewLookMenus are now used - fixed a minor bug: When iconified, AddressManager did not release the WB-Screen completely, so you could not e.g. change the screen mode until you left AM. - AddressManager V2.0 (13.06.1994): - new prefs, print and search functions - lots of intern optimizations - AddressManager V2.1 (04.07.1994): - the tooltypes are now more logical - you can add new data from a file to the existing list - rewriten some funktions (save,load...) to save some code (about 2K) - fixed a bug in the new print-function - the DEFAULT TOOL of the data-files is now set correctly - there are now 2 installer scripts: german and english - now PD, not SHAREWARE anymore @endnode @node plans "FUTURE PLANS" - use good ideas, which I hope to get from you I will of course double my efforts if I know that there are people who use the programm. You can show me that you use AddressManager by sending me some money, a small gift or a letter (see also CREDITS). @endnode @node credits "CREDITS/BUGREPORTS" AddressManager V2.1 and all files coming along with it were developed by: MICHAEL SCHIKORA CHEMNITZER WEG 1 53119 BONN GERMANY Send all bug-reports, ideas, letters, postcards, money, gifts etc. to this address.
