Introduction

This HTML page started life as a small 3 engine page two weeks ago. It is now bigger and much more than I thought I would need it to be. It neatly fulfils my own needs and is about 50 hours of mad work too long. :) I don't deny writing it, but I must have been insane when I decided to continue. :) It works well on any modern browser. You are advised to use it as the home page, loading it from your hard drive rather than manually looking for those pages on the Web. The main requirement is a computer that can be on the net and additionally any browser that handles text (all of them!). If you're reading this file, there is a good chance that you can use it :) ALynx cannot access some of the searchers in this version. A dedicated version may appear in the future, if there is demand from users. The latest version will always be on: HTTP://www.geocities.com/paris/6612/amiga.html

Installation

Assuming the archive is already unpacked, you should move the file SSE.html to your fave browser directory. You can configure your browser to have the page as its home page. The doc file for Amiga owners is SSE_Doc.guide. There is also a file in HTML form (SSE_Doc.html), for all other users.

Hints And Tips

Using the page under iBrowse demo 1.01 is not recommended on machines with slower processors than the 68030. Loading the page on a basic Amiga 1200 with fast memory takes approximately 47 seconds. Either use a browser that handles text faster, or use consistent fonts in your settings - one type for H1-H6 fonts and one for normal text. A future version may be split into different files, making it easier to find a specific searcher and also much faster for mortals like me who have their processor running at 14MHz :) Use the "Tab" key to move between text gadgets under MUI. Shift+Tab moves back. With AWeb the Tab acts a bit differently - It moves between the text strings on the same engine only. ALynx leaves you with many options. The up and down cursor keys are very effective in moving between the page's elements. Speed ----- These statistics may help you find the right browser to use this page with. OS Browser Name Computer Time Taken ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AmigaOS 3.1 AWeb 1.2 A1200 020+FastRAM/14MHz 2.8 seconds AmigaOS 3.1 Voyager 1.0 A1200 020+FastRAM/14MHz 9 seconds AmigaOS 3.1 ALynx 1.29 A1200 020+FastRAM/14MHz 29 seconds AmigaOS 3.1 AMosaic 2.0 A1200 020+FastRAM/14MHz 29 seconds AmigaOS 3.1 iBrowse 1.01 demo A1200 020+FastRAM/14MHz 47 seconds OS/2 Warp 3.0 Web Explorer 1.1d Pentium Overdrive 63MHz A few seconds FreeBSD 2.1.5 Lynx 2.5 486DX33/16MB A few seconds Windows 95 Netscape 2.0 Pentium 120MHz/16MB 2.5 seconds Windows 95 Explorer 4.40 Pentium 120MHz/16MB 3 seconds Windows 95 Netscape 3.0 Pentium 83MHz/16MB 5 seconds Windows 3.11 Websurf 4.6 486DX66/16MB 5 seconds Windows 3.11 Netscape 3.0 beta 486DX66/16MB 6 seconds System 7.5.5 Netscape 2.01 Quadra 610 w/Power Mac upgrade A few seconds I cannot guarantee that all servers work all the time. In fact, at any given time at least 3 or more searchers do not accept queries. If a searcher repeatedly forbids your access or totally ignores your query, please report to me and I will remove it from the page in future versions. It may be that it is temporarily down. In such a case try again at a different time.

Future

Future plans: Well, to live happily and to cherish every moment :) Ohh, and to make the index part guide the user to specific searchers using a smart recommendation system. Making the page run more smoothly is also a wish with a high priority. I will consider every suggestion by users. It is YOUR page and should reflect your wishes and ideas. :)
