Files Applications KingFisher Release 2 is a special purpose client-server database tool for the Amiga computer, designed to store and retrieve large amounts of information about software or other topics, typically software collections on CD-ROM or other large libraries. Fred Fish's AmigaLibDisks ("Fish Disks") number at least 1000, with over 4500 individual programs. CD-ROMs store an even larger number of files, and Aminet, the global network of ftp sites serving Amiga's all across the globe, reached 25000 files in January 1996. How can you find anything at all among these files? How do you even know what's there? KingFisher is designed to help you find what you are looking for. Looking for something to support Postscript on your Amiga, or maybe a CAD demo package? Need a level editor for your favorite game? KingFisher makes it easy to look for any of these, and more! The following provides you with a more detailed overview of KingFisher: User Interfaces GadTools GUI A resizable GadTools interface honors the proportional system font (or any proportional, scaled, or bitmapped font of your choosing.) The window can be opened on the default public or on any custom screen in the system's Display Database. The GUI will adjust to the screen's aspect ratio to present you with a pleasing (non-stretched / non-flattened) GUI. ARexx Rexxfisher, the ARexx interface to the server, offers the same powerful searches (see below) and data layout operations (see below) as what KingFisher provides through the GUI. RexxFisher's small size makes it the ideal interface for multi-user access to the databases on BBSs. Searching KingFisher supports powerful search expressions, including embedded support for AmigaDOS regular expressions. A history of recently used expressions is maintained for instant recall to eliminate the need to reconstruct them. Search operations can be made either interactively (the program stops when it finds a match), or by producing a Search Set which provides random access to any matching item in the database. Search Sets can be saved to disk and reloaded to eliminate the need for repeated searches. A feature unique to KingFisher is its use of Version Links: each record in the database is linked to a similar record such that you can move effortlessly to a previous or later version of the currently displayed software. Version Links are constructed in version-order. Presentation The display of database records is configurable through external layout specification files. These files are automatically hotlinked by KingFisher to allow you to modify them with an editor program of your choice and have KingFisher reflect the changes instantly. The format of printed output and exported data is independently definable, and each database is assigned its own combination of layout files. Product-Info Support Standard Product-Info files can be viewed directly from within KingFisher's GUI, independently of an open database. The Product-Info file is automatically hotlinked so that changes made to it from within your favorite editor are immediately reflected by KingFisher. Clipboard Support One or more records can be copied to the clipboard, and KingFisher can also append records found in the clipboard to the current database. This enables cut-and-paste operations of database information to email, news, word processing, and other applications, as well as permitting you to transfer data between databases. Client-Server technology The use of this powerful database access technology allows KingFisher to serve databases to multiple users (or multiple copies of KingFisher running simultaneously.) The mechanics are implemented to function transparently, and become increasingly valuable in true multi-user environments such as BBSs. The server's interface is public! Any registered user of KingFisher may use the KingFisher Developer Kit to create database clients for any desired purpose. Data Flexibility Databases are a text-based superset of the Product-Info standard, which makes it possible to edit the files with your favorite text editor if the files should get damaged in any way, then reconstruct the index files and the Version Links. Databases can be split at the record-level across an arbitrary number of disk volumes that will be mounted on demand. This permits systems with limited disk space to store huge databases on floppy or other removable media. KingFisher's user of client-server technology also enhances the safety of your databases, as all access goes through a single server that determines if an operation on a database is permissible (example: two simultaneous attempts to add data to a single database could have disastrous results if such arbitration did not take place.) Because of the current kludgy way the ACCUGExtract script detects duplicate files, you can't extract these to the same destination. All three archives extract into the directory KingFisher-Distribution, the extract script sees that a directory with that name already exists and assumes that you have already extracted that archive. This is something that needs to be corrected when I eventually re-write the script, although this case doesn't show up too often. The file KingFisher2db.LHA almost fills an entire floppy by itself, so to get it to fit with all the ACCUG overhead I have on each disk I had to format ACCUG #136 as Fast File System to gain an additional 40k. Some members of @{B}ACCUG@{UB} have spoken out against using archives on club disks. Many members have stated that they would prefer all programs "ready to run." I feel that archives, because of their data compression routines, allow for more information to be placed on a single disk. Also in the Amiga world, many "ShareWare" authors @{B}REQUIRE@{UB} that their software packages be released @{B}ONLY@{UB} in the @{B}ORIGINAL ARCHIVE@{UB}. Enough said. This document contains much information about the contents of files found on this disk. Each file has an entry similar to the following: Filename.ext - Version - Source - [flags] | DIR 1) Filename is the name of the file, the extension (.ext) will tell you what kind of file it is. Some typical extensions include: .LZH - LHARC style archive (obsolete). .LHA - LHA style archive, replaces LHARC (.LZH). .DMS - DISKMASHER style archive. .GIF - Graphics Interchange Format file. .IFF - Standard Amiga IFF graphics file. 2) Version is the current version of the file. Use this to make sure you are using the very latest version available as periodic upgrades will occasionally appear on @{B}ACCUG@{UB} Amiga club disks. 3) Source is where I originally obtained the file and is useful if the program turns out not to work properly. This can also be used to track a file if it turns out not to be freely redistributable. 4) The flags field contains information about the contents of a archive file. Some typical flags include: 2 - Requires AmigaDOS 2.04, or better. 3 - Requires AmigaDOS 3.1, or better. P - Requires the display to be in PAL video mode. A - Requires AGA graphics chip set. EXE - The archive contains an executable file. DOC - The archive contains documentation. SUP - The archive contains support files such as libraries, fonts, device drivers, etc. XSUP - The archive requires support files such as libraries, fonts, device drivers, etc. and these support files are NOT supplied. SRC - The archive contains source code, this is usually followed by a modifier which tells what type of source code is included. Typical examples: C - Source code in C. M2 - Source code in Modula-II (was MOD). ASM - Source code in Assembly. REX - Source code in ARexx. 5) The last (DIR) is present if the archive contains subdirectories. Some of the early archive extraction programs require a command line switch to properly extract files from archives which contain subdirectories. Example: MyFile.LHA - v1.04 - wuarchive.wustl.edu - [EXE:DOC:SRC/C] MyFile is the name of the file and it is an LHA style archive. The current version of the file is v1.04 and it was downloaded from wuarchive.wustl.edu (which is an @{B}InterNet anonymous FTP@{UB} site). The file contains an executable program with documentation and source code in C. @endnode @node Viruses "A word about Viruses." As of @{U}ACCUG Amiga disk #125@{UU}, all club disks are @{B}UNINSTALLED@{UB} and @{B}DO NOT BOOT@{UB}, they @{B}MUST@{UB} be used from @{B}WorkBench@{UB}. If this disk boots then it is probably infected with a boot block virus. However, because of the proliferation of nonboot block viruses, Trojan horses, worms, and logic bombs, all material on this disk is presented @{B}AS IS@{UB}. I can not stress this enough "@{B}LET THE END-USER BEWARE!@{UB}" (That's @{B}YOU@{UB}.) Protect yourself and your valuable data, @{B}ALWAYS@{UB} use Write-Protects! For further protection against people who create and spread bogus software, I've begun to digitally "sign" the @{B}CRC@{UB} list (found in the s directory of each disk) with @{B}PGP@{UB} (current version v2.3a.2 can be found on @{U}ACCUG Amiga club disk #109@{UU}). While this procedure does not guarantee that the programs found on this disk are free of virii or trojans, it does guarantee that the programs found on this disk originally came from me and have not been subsequently tampered with. To prevent interference with the check @{B}CRC@{UB} script, I used a detached signature certificate. You @{B}MUST@{UB} have @{B}PGP@{UB} (v2.0+) and my @{B}PGP public key@{UB} to do this validity check.
