What? v1.0 by Gonçalo Valverde INTRODUCTION So what the heck is What? ? Its just a small program that trys to find what is the file type of a given file or of an entire directory. What can also do enter subdirectorys and check the files on them. What? uses the whatis.library (included in the distrubution) so its easy for the final user to add new file types. It was programed using the great E language (Great work Wouter!).And What? is also my first program that works as i want , i.e. it doesnt crash the machine :-).Ive included also the source code for the program. If you wish to recompile it you need to get the Amiga E compiler v2.1b(you can get it on Aminet at dev/e) and you also need the emodules for the wahtis.library in emodules: DISTRIBUTION What? is Freeware. Feel free to distribute it but keep the distribution intact (binaries, source code ,emodules and the whatis.library stuff) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS You need Kickstart 2.04 or better (well.. is there still anyone working whith 1.3?) and the whatis.library 3.7 or higher (included in the distribution) installed. INSTALATION Just copy the whatis.library from the whatis directory to your LIBS: directory and the filetypes file from whatis/s to your S: directory. USAGE If called without any argument What? will check all the files in the current directory. If you wish that it examines only one file just provide its name, like: what? foobar (all true programers use foobar! :-) ) OR what? foo:foo/bar If you want that What? examines also the subdirectories just add the ALL keyword DISCLAIMER You use What? at your own risk. This means that if by any unbelievable reason your Hard Disk (you do have an hard disk, rigth? :-) is formated after using What? ya cant blame it on me :-) THE WHATIS LIBRARY Read the docs included in the whatis directory... There are some new filetypes in the filetypes file that i added. The authors of the whatis.library dont know of this distribution (they dont have e-mail and im too lazy to write a letter by snail mail.. :-( ).But since the library is freely distributed this shouldnt be a problem. By the way, ive included the e modules for this library that i converted. They are needed to recompile the source code.
