THE MEN IN BLACK:  FACT OR FICTION?

Visions of the Virgin Mary have been overtaken this century by sightings
of extraterrestrial beings and visits from UFOs. While, in this logical
age of Microsoft and the computer chip , rational people dismiss those
visited as drunk, insane, credulous or sensation-seeking, the same
people watch the "X Files" avidly. Mysteries have not lost their hold.

The Men In Black takes as its theme the things in the world we can't
explain and our reactions to them. In a futuristic society where
everything can be - and is - measured scientifica lly, there is great
power in the hands of the Doctor and his measuring team. But evidence of
the Men In Blac k eludes them, despite the severe consequences to the
witneses who experience these bizarre visitation s. Are the Men In Black
a fragment of the observers' unhinged thoughts, or do these "men" exist?

In fact the Men In Black are a real phenomenon, recorded over the last
30 years in association with some UFO sightings. Accounts from witnesses
agree: they are usually three in number, dressed in old fashioned suits
and arriving in an unregistered Cadillac. But so far no one has
furnished any evidence to support these claims.

Utilising this obscure mystery, SERIO ENSEMBLE present a darkly comic
piece, arguing strongly that we should leave space for the unknowable
and imaginative in our world. If we push the unanswered questions out of
sight, will they come back in awkward forms to trouble us?

The play, set in a giant maze, uses text, dance and an original score to
reproduce the baffling nature of these experiences convincingly, taking
the audience back and forth in time to s how both trigger and effect.
The resulting narrative describes the crisis facing those who try for m
odel citizenship in an increasingly technocratic world.
