STAR TREK FAN CLUBS --------------------- Compiled by Simon Plumbe -------------------------- Here it is! The third instalment of our regularly updated list of all the TREK fan clubs in the world. If you've missed the last few issues, we are running a regular list of contact addresses for TREK fan clubs. It can be hard at times finding out about clubs in your local area, or even just within your own country, so we're trying to create the most fully-comprehensive list ever attempted! Once again, there have been quite a few changes from last time:- 3 clubs deleted, 8 addresses changed, 4 with additional details and 31 new entries! So we've now updated the guide to include addresses for a staggering 123 clubs, still covering 12 different countries!! As you can see, we've broken the list up into two halves this time - Trek and Actor-related clubs. Many of the actor related clubs don't just concentrate on their work in Trek so we felt it was unfair to class them as such. We haven't added fanzines yet, because no-one has asked us to, but if you want them listed, let us know! In connection with the above, you'll notice that in the Trek section, there is a Data and a Doctor Crusher fan club. We felt that it would be best to list these under Trek clubs as opposed to Actor clubs as they seem to be appreciation clubs for the CHARACTERS and NOT the actors in question. Also, to try and enhance the guide, I am in the middle of contacting ALL of the clubs listed, asking them if they want to send us additional details to include in the guide. So far, we have contacted 20 of the clubs featured and by the time Issue 4 is released we will have written to almost all of them. At least we can't be accused of not offering them the chance! Starting with the next issue, we will also be including non-Trek clubs, but there will be a small charge for inclusion in the guide (see the end of the article for details). I may also break the guide up to cover separate countries, making it easier for anyone to find about their "local" clubs. Contents of the newsletters vary but past newsletters have had quite a mixture in them including the latest news, news on the actors, profiles of all the actors, convention reports, book reviews, zine reviews, episode reviews, a look at magazine articles, new merchandise, letters from members, articles written by members etc. We have an extensive letters section where members can comment on or discuss anything to do with Star Trek which interests them. There is a Friendship corner where member can contact each other in their area or advertise for penpals, a small ads section where members can advertise free of charge, a zine ads sections for those who collect fanzines and a general ads section for conventions, clubs, local groups etc. As well as putting out newsletters we also publish fanzines which contain fiction and poetry written by fans. An active group of Star Trek, science fiction and space enthusiasts, we hold twice monthly meetings. In addition, those who are unable to attend meetings are kept in touch with the rest of the group through a monthly newsletter and occasional magazine. The group also undertakes regular charity work and organises trips to places of interest. Come along and meet us at Newcastle Central Library on the first Saturday of the month or Darlington Arts Centre on the third Saturday of the month.
