ParaBIT Server Set -- Terminal software for a DNet BBS V0.93g (c) Copyright 1992 Christopher Laprise, freely distributable. Requirements: AmigaDOS 1.3.2 OR 2.04 or higher, 512K RAM, harddisk or two floppies What This Software Does: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR MODEM'S FULL-DUPLEX TRANSMISSION CAPABILITY! This combination of Matt Dillon's DNet with the ParaBIT server software allows you to basically upload, download and continue reading/writing messages and using almost all other aspects of a properly-equipped BBS (electronic Bulletin Board system); In other words, uploads and downloads will progress simultaneously with each other and with your ParaBIT terminal, currently allowing you up to three (upload, download and terminal/menus/text) modes of simultaneous operation. Uploads and downloads operate over your modem at full speed.. You are getting about TWICE as much done as you normally would, perhaps more if you like to read and respond to messages which takes very little effort from your modem and any effect on ParaBIT up/downloads should be negligable. July 11, 1992 Release Contains: * DNet V2.02 and several standard servers * Matt Dillon's basic DNet docs and release notes (not required reading to use ParaBIT) * 'Addresser' by Jeff Kelly, with doc. Provides a convenient dialer: Just run AFTER running 'startDNet' and hit < or > arrow 'til you see the BBS, then hit 'Call'... You MUST hit 'OK' after the modem starts dialing. * ParaBIT server software for Terminal, Uploading and Downloading * This documentation Installation: First, copy the files found in the "s/" subdirectory to your system "S:" directory. Then select or create a directory on a suitable disk; For the time being this directory will both hold the ParaBIT/DNet software and accept any downloads performed with the ParaBIT software. Copy all remaining files to your chosen directory (or better yet, just drag the ParaBIT drawer-icon to a place you would like the terminal to reside). Operation: You must first start DNet by simply double-clicking on the 'startDNet' icon; The serial BAUD parameter defined in Preferences will be the one used by DNet and ParaBIT. Once you have started DNet, you may use a dialer program or terminal program phonebook to dial the BBS you want to connect with, OR you may type in the modem's dial command directly through the DNet window (for Hayes modems: "ATDT15086774535"); Your dialer/terminal program MUST be able to release the serial port immediately after dialing. NOTE: Since DNet is an error-correcting protocol, use of MNP or V.42 error-correction in addition would be a duplication of effort and may hinder throughput. If you are having difficulty with either MNP or V.42 enabled during your ParaBIT sessions, try disabling the modem's error-correction before you make your next call. Likewise, since ParaBIT relies heavily on full-duplex communication, using this over a high-speed Courier HST link should be painful, if not impossible. (V.32 & V.32bis are generally not a problem.) When calling with V.32 or V.32bis, use ONLY RTS/CTS flow control: Preferences and your modem must be set to RTS/CTS mode, and your modem cable must be able to support this mode (otherwise called "7-wire" or "hardware flow control"). Recommended Setup for V.32 modems : "AT&C1&D2&K3W1" " " for other Hayes modems: "AT&C1&D2X3" Upon connect, you will see a BBS login screen. Answer 'yes' or 'y' when you are prompted to initiate ParaBIT, then wait until you are prompted to 'start DNet' from your pull-down menu. After you select 'start DNet' from your DNet window's pull-down menu, there will be a delay of several seconds and then your ParaBIT terminal should magically appear or "come online". At this point, you will be greeted by the BBS again and can log in like you usually do. File Transfers: Both downloading and uploading should initiate automatically once you have selected that function on the BBS and answered its prompts. Keep in mind, however, that while you are able to upload from any directory in your system, all downloads currently go to the directory that the ParaBIT/DNet programs reside. Allowing more flexible downloads is one of the many enhancements planned for future releases. History: * May 17, 1992 V 0.92 BETA First release-- for adventurous souls. * May 21, 1992 V 0.92g First GAMMA release-- should prove stable for most users: Upload & Download bug-fixed by being converted to semi-permanent tasks. * May 27, 1992 V 0.922g -- Oops. Terminal had a problem exiting. * May 27, 1992 V 0.923g -- DNet now uses a 7-wire (RTS/CTS) mode. All servers cleaned up and more efficient. Terminal appears to exit OK. * May 28, 1992 V 0.93g -- Added more error-trapping. Download server exits OK now. Corrected handling of up/down- load abort; User abort is now Ctrl-E. Many more messages for aborts/errors. * July 11, 1992 Still V 0.93g -- Added 'Addresser' as a dialer. Future: + Chat-style packet window + Text capturing to file + Resume feature for file transfers + Independant download and capture directories + Phonebook entries with bps & modem-command settings === Troy ========== ===== City ======== ======= Proteus === =.
