******************************************* Convert,ViewDisk,ViewTree and ViewPhone By Paul Compton July1993 Written in AmosPro Using NCommand Procedures. ****************************************** Copywrite of all 4 programs remains with me..not that anybody would want to nick them anyway..If you would like to see changes or something added, drop me a line with a big cheque and I will see what I can do.To make records in the databases active just click in a record and a blue cursor will appear, so you can edit it. Also on the disk is a Lha file called Harddrive_versions the files are a lot smaller because there is an Amos Library which you of course put in your Libs directory and this serves all 4 programs. To quit the programs click on the close gadget in the title bar in the left hand corner. All 4 programs are PAL only. ------------------------------------------ *CONVERT* This is a program as the name suggests for converting one thing to another, feet to inches, inches to light years. I have tried to include most measurements I could think off. All you do is run the program, then choose from the main screen what type of measurement you want length, mass, money whatever then the next screen choose the actual unit you want. Type in the number and that is it. Easy ha. You can use normal numbers or exponential. All the conversions should be accurate but I do not accept responsibility for wrong answers, just incase anybody tries to sue me for failing an exam!!! If you want to see extra conversion types added drop me a line with the conversion rate. -------------------------------------------- *VIEWTREE* Having tried several different other family tree programs, and not really finding one that was nice and easy to use and basically just provide me with an easy way to keep track of family I decided to write one myself.. What I have tried to do is make it as simple to use and set up as I can. First it is best used from hard disk it speeds it up, but if you run it from floppy you can just click on it and go or drag the 3 files, ViewTree the main program, marriage and personal to the ram window this will also speed things up, do not forget to copy the marriage file and personal files back to the original disk when you have finished editing. On to the program itself when you first open the program you have no files, the buttons are ghosted so you know this, make sure ViewTree is in the directory where you are going to use it click on Add records and ViewTree will make 25 records of each type for you to start with. You can always add more later adding more blank files to start with only makes the program have to count more blank files. The reason it is done like this, is because when you are putting a lot of data in it seemed easier than having to click on a button for a new entry each time. From the main menu you have a choice of options, these are Personal, Marriage, Blank form, Family tree, Add records and Personal list. All the items have the hot key underscored. Just press the underscored letter. Onto what each part does:- *PERSONAL SCREEN This is the main record part of the program, here you put in the details of of each individual. Each person has a record number, this number is used quit a bit in different parts of the program. The buttons on this screen are:- LEFT and RIGHT arrows to move through the Dbase. NEXT PAGE extra info page, divorce details, work details. UPDATE when you put in a record number this puts the info on screen, SEARCH this takes you to a small search screen, select the item you want to search on, Surname 1st.name etc. Then select search and insert the the search string it is not case sensitive. Also you do not need to know the whole string COMP will find Compton etc. The first matching record it finds will be shown, select continue search till it finds the record you want or select goto Edit and return to the Edit screen of the found record. If it does not find the record you want you can select to search again by clicking on search when the prompt Search again? comes up, setting up your search pattern first if you want to change the search pattern. NEXT FREE takes you straight to the next record with a blank Surname entry. GOTO RECORD this prompts you for a record number to go to. PRINT RECORD prints out the record to printer. When you put in a record make sure that you do not put any blanks in to the left of names, as the program may some times miss a name. So make sure the cursor is in the extreme left of the entry. PHOTO This allows you to show a related photo to the record. To do this you have to have your photo's on a disk called VTPics: and the IFF pics have to be called VT ? the ? refers to the record number in the database so a picture for record 1 will be called VT 1 make sure you put the space between VT and the number! *MARRIAGE SCREEN All you need to do here is put in the record numbers of the people you want to make the record of, ViewTree will put in the names when you click on update. The buttons are:- LEFT/RIGHT arrows, move through the database. UPDATE after putting in info use this to insert the names. NEXT PAGE any extra information you have. NEXT FREE takes you to the next blank record. GOTO RECORD takes you to a specific record number. PRINT RECORD information to printer. SHOW PHOTO This is the same as for the decription of photo above, but you name your pics VTM ? - but ? refers to the marriage record number, not the personal record number. *FAMILY CHART SCREEN PRINT CHART to printer. SCREEN CHART puts it on screen. MAIN MENU back to main menu. *PERSONAL LIST SCREEN This brings up a listing of all your personal records. PRINT sends the list to printer. *BLANK FORM Gives you a blank form to use to put information on. *ADD RECORDS This comes up with 2 prompts personal records and marriage records, just insert the number of files you want to add, it is best to only add small groups at a time say blocks of 20. You can add extra records at any time. You do not have to make extra files for both types each time you can just add personal files or just marriage files. ---------------------------------------- *VIEWPHONE* Continuing the tradition of easy to use database's and with the rather catchy name of ViewPhone. This is the third View program. I got a bit fed up with American phone book programs with Zip codes and States, so I wrote this with the UK market more in mind. This has post codes and house names, and have you ever wanted to find your mate Nobby Clark, yes this has it, a space for nick names, Wow! You can also use it to put in key words for when you use the search. I really wrote it because I think the main reason you would want something like this is because you want to find a phone number quickly, not so you can view friends addresses..And I think this program does just that. Let you find a phone number, quick. If you want to move the program once you have set it up in a directory or on a disk you will have to move, the main program ViewPhone, and 2 data files ABDATA, TDATA I try to make these programs so they have the features I would like to see rather than the norm. All hot keys are underlined. The program has 7 buttons on the main screen:- NEW ENTRY... Click on this each time you want to add an extra entry, when you do this it will also update the scroll box at the bottom. SEARCH.. This comes up with another screen..select what item you want to search on Surname, 1st.name etc. Then click on Search or press S when ViewPhone finds a match you can opt to Goto Edit and the record will be displayed or press search again to carry on searching. At the end of the search you can opt to search again or Goto Edit, if you want to change the search pattern do this before you select search. You can enter part strings, COMP will find Compton etc 1ST.RECORD.. Yes this goes to the first record. LAST RECORD.. OK you guessed it this goes to the last record. UP/DOWN ARROWS.. Hot keys cursor up arrow, down arrow Moves you through the database. UPDATE.. Will update the scroll box entries if you have made alterations to an entry. This is done automaticaly when you add a new record. PRINT.. This will bring up a requester, with 3 choices on it, Letter, Label and Abort print..Click on Letter and the entry you had on the Edit screen will be printed out, this is if you have a printer on and connected of course, set the letter top in line with the print head. Choose Label and all the entries will be printed out in label format, again it will help if you have a printer connected and on, the label size it is set for is A4 continues paper with labels 35mm*100mm, 2 labels side by side. This is a common size for labels and an even better reason is that it is the size I use!!! If you want to stop the print out at any time you can hold down the left mouse key and it will abort the print out, of course the printer will carry on printing it's buffer. In the scrollbox is a short list of your entries. So you do not need to hunt through all the entries for a phone number. Scrollbox entries are as follows:- First name initial..Surname..HomePhone..WorkPhone If you click on an entry in the scrollbox it will load it on the main screen to edit or view. I know it could do with sort but I can not work out how to do it in Amos!!! ------------------------------------------------ *VIEWDISK* ViewDisk is just a small, very easy to use datebase, set up just to catalogue the contents of disks, it makes it a lot easier to find the utility entry I wanted. It is more set up for my own use but others may find it useful..who knows.. ViewDisk will allow you to type in descriptions, take descriptions straight off the disk and also allow you to print off a disk label for the a disk, you can also print off a label for a disk not in your list. You can stop the program when it is listing something just by holding a mouse button down.. You can put the screen behind the workbench screen by pressing left Amiga+A, same to bring it back..it takes a lot of memory and slows things down a bit. When you use the program on disk it takes a little time to look at files..it is better used on harddisk, or copied to ram.. If you want to move the program once it has been set up on a disk or a hard disk, you will have to move the main program ViewDisk, and the 3 data files with it VDDATA, VDSPACE and VDNAME. On the main screen you have room for the disk name, 4 lines for a description of disk contents, and when you use the ViewDisk selector it will also record free disk space. You can just type in an entry or select contents of the disk from the ViewDisk selector. It has 13 buttons on the main screen.(All really self explanatory) If you click on the screen printer cyclic while in Edit mode a prompt comes up so you can print out a batch of records. EDIT.. This is ghosted when you are editing files, but is open when you are searching so you can go back to edit mode. SEARCH.. This goes to the search mode, you have 2 cyclic gadgets, Screen or printer and the other so you can just search Description, name, bytes free, default is all. When you have set these click on start search. If it finds the file you want you can press E on the keyboard or press the Edit button, you can then Edit the entry, or it will just continue searching till it finds another matching record. The search is not case sensitive also you can use a part string to find something VIRUS will find Virus checker, VirusX etc. It is not the fastest search in the world but it only takes 9 secs on my hard drive to search 500 records when you use the quickest search which is for name only..It only takes 12 secs when you search name and description with the all search..I'm never in that much of a rush so it will do for me! ADD FILE.. This is the button to click on to add blank files, there is no need to enter a large amount as you can add extra files at any time, I find it best to put in blocks of fifty..When you first use the program and click on this it will make 25 entries... The reason I choose to put files in like this is that I like to keep my disks in batches eg. Fish 1-500, PD 501-600 ect. It just makes them easier to find..(if you don't like it that way....tough..only kidding) CLEAR.. This clears the contents of the file you are looking at. LEFT and RIGHT ARROWS..(Inner) Hotkeys Cursor left and Cursor right Let you move through the data base, 1 entry at a time. LEFT and RIGHT ARROWS..(Outer) Hotkeys Cursor up and Cursor down Lets you auto scroll through the data base, speed of scroll is controlled by the little slider gadget on the left of the screen next to the arrows. Stop the listing by holding down a mousekey. GOTO.. Takes you to a certain record number LABEL.. This takes you to another screen where you can print off a disk label for any entry, there are 3 buttons on this screen, the label is layed out on the right of the screen, adjust the entries as how they look on the screen is how they will look on the label. On the left is a scroll box with a list of all your entries you just click on the one you want to appear in the label. PRINT LABEL.. Yes it prints the label the display is how it will print out set it up how you like it. Click in one of the fields till you get a blue cursor then you can edit. CLEAR LABEL.. This will give you a blank label so you can print anything you like. RETURN TO EDIT.. This takes you back to the edit screen. VIEWDISK.. Put in the disk you want to catalogue then click on this, it will take you to a different screen, on this you have 8 gadgets. Here you can click on the file names and they will be added to the record. As you click on the files the will be transfered to the four record spaces at the top of the screen. The buttons are as follows, all short cut keys are underlined.. Drive buttons..DF0: or DF1: Choose the drive you want to load. LOAD.. Hot key L This loads your selected drive and allows you to start editing. SAVE.. Hot key V This will save your entries and return you to the edit screen, putting the entries in the record you where working on, it will overwrite any existing records. P..arent Hot key P If you are in a sub directory click on this to return to parent directory. EXIT.. Hot key X Returns you to the Edit screen without saving your entries. SKIP.. Hot key K This button is so you can put an entry into the list, then skip to the next line, say if you wanted to leave a blank space for a description etc. UNDO.. This will remove the entries from the line that you are working on, if you make a bobo. When you click on an entry use the left mouse button to add it to the active list, right mouse button will read a sub directory if it has a * in front of it, denoting a drawer. Before you go to the ViewDisk screen it is best to clear the entry you are working on because if you leave a blank line when you select your entries, and there was something written in the original entry it will not be overwritten...(If you know what I mean!) -------------------------------------------------- Known bugs.. I have found when I try to run Amos programs with SID2 running sometimes the programs will not load it just sits there with a blank screen. (Weird huh!!).. If you hold left Amiga key and the A key to take you back to workbench screen, then the same again it should clear it! Also other than the requester there is no check on the printer.. No printer don't select output to printer.. If you find any bugs let me know. I have tried the programs on WB1.3,WB2 and WB3 and they seem to work O.K.
