GOBBLERS - "An everyday tale of ordinary, stupid, hungry monsters"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GOBBLERS ARE VERY STUPID. They`ll walk forever in one direction if you let
them and if they can`t walk any further, they`ll choose a new direction at
random and stomp off that way. Luckily, seated in your amazing Joystick
Craft (TM Willysoft Europe, Patent Pending), you can remove tiles in the
play area simply by moving off them, thereby creating holes with which
to guide the Gobbler. What`s more, by first pressing the fire button and
then pointing the joystick, you can re-build tiles over empty spaces
adjacent to you. On some levels you`ll find that the number of tiles you
can re-build in this way is restricted to 30, but that`s more than
adequate, isn`t it? Note that it is possible to build a tile without
then moving onto it - this is especially important if you need to build
a bridge for a Gobbler after cutting it off from a bone.
GOBBLERS ARE VERY HUNGRY. They`ll eat anyone or anything that gets in their
way, with the exception of other Gobblers (because, even by Gobblers`
standards, they taste absolutely disgusting). A level is completed as soon
as all of the bones in the play area have been gobbled within a 3-minute
time limit. Should a child or your Joystick Craft (TM Willysoft Europe,
Patent Pending, I`ve told you once) be eaten, however, the game ends.
Points are scored only for completed levels, and are calculated according
to the time remaining and the level number - so the quicker you complete
a level, the more points you score. If you achieve a High Score, you will
be asked to input your initials, after which the revised High Score
Table will be saved to your game disk. If you don`t wish to write to
your disk, simply write-disable it by moving the black tab so that you
can see through the hole.
A NOTE FOR QUITTERS. Pressing ESC during play will return you to the
title screen, but be warned - no check is made for a new High Score.
LEVELS. There are a maximum of 8 levels on this, the PD version of
"Gobblers", which is quite enough for a lot of people! If, however,
you think you can take on the mighty behemoth that is the FULL version,
see the bottom of these docs for an important message.
AUTOFIRE. If your joystick has an autofire option, make sure that this
is switched off.
+ AND -. The appearance of one of these signs in the small yellow box
at the top left of the screen indicates that random tile replacement/
random tile removal is in operation on this level.
HINTS. Don`t panic. Restrict the Gobblers` choices. Don`t get too near.
Try to `draw` lines of holes around bones. Isolate children. OK, panic.
