TransWrite Instructions for Installing on a Hard Disk ========================================== ********************************************************************** * * * To guard against damage to your diskette, please write-protect * * it before proceeding. Instead, hit * * the CANCEL button on the requester, and do the installation from * * the CLI, as described below. * * * ********************************************************************** To get a hard-copy listing of this information From the CLI or Shell, insert the TransWrite diskette into one of the drives. Then type the following command: Copy TransWrite:Help-Install PRT: To install TransWrite on your hard disk Version 1.3 of the Workbench software must be installed on your Amiga in order for this installation procedure to work correctly. Many users can install TransWrite in the SYS: partition of their hard disks. This is where the System, Utilities, Prefs, and other standard drawers can be found. If the Workbench only shows you one disk icon for your hard drive, then this is the place to install TransWrite. Some users, however, will not have enough room in the SYS: partition. Owners of Amiga 2500's, especially, will likely have a very small SYS: partition and other, larger, partitions on which their programs and data files are stored. These users should install TransWrite onto one of their larger partitions. If you do not specify where on your hard drive TransWrite should be installed, HDInstall will look for a partition called Work:. If this exists, the TransWrite programs will be installed there. Otherwise, they will be installed into SYS:. The TransWrite files are not actually placed in the drawer you choose. Instead, a drawer called TransWrite is created there, and the files are gathered together inside it. To install TransWrite in the default (Work: or SYS:) partition From Workbench, double-click on the HDInstall icon in the TransWrite diskette's drawer. From the CLI or Shell, insert the TransWrite diskette into one of the drives. Then type the following command: Execute TransWrite:HDInstall To install TransWrite in a different location From Workbench, click once on the HDInstall icon. Then press either Shift key on the keyboard and, while holding down the Shift key, double- click on the icon for the drawer into which you want to install TransWrite. From the CLI or Shell, insert the TransWrite diskette into one of the drives. Then type the following command: Execute TransWrite:HDInstall drive:directory You should replace the drive:directory part by the name of the partition, and the directory in that partition, where you want TransWrite to be installed. Once you've started the installation procedure, you will be asked whether you really want to install TransWrite. This gives you a chance to back out (if you made a typing mistake, for example). If you say No here, the installation will quit without changing your hard drive at all. Once you have told the installation to go ahead, it will perform a number of different steps. These are summarized here: 1. If this is the first time you have installed any of the TransWrite programs, a drawer called TransWrite will be created in the location you specified; as described above, if you didn't specify any location, Work: or SYS: will be used. This drawer will contain all of the TransWrite programs. If you have run HDInstall before, it will have created a TransWrite drawer the first time around; this drawer will be used again for the new installation. 2. The TransWrite programs will be installed and you will be asked if you want to install the Example files as well. It is perfectly alright to leave these out; you may then run HDInstall again to install them at a later date. 3. Workbench V2.0 or higher users need do nothing else. The proper TransWrite Assigns will be automatically made for you whenever you reboot your computer. This is preformed by a script file in the SYS:WBStartup drawrer. If you are using WorkBench 1.3 you MUST do one of the following: 1) You should edit the file S:startup-sequence, inserting the following lines near the end, just before the LoadWB command: Assign TransWrite: :TransWrite Assign Spell: TransWrite: - where is the name of the drive TransWrite was installed on. i.e. If TransWrite was installed on Work:WordProcessors, then you would insert the following lines: Assign TransWrite: Work:WordProcessors/TransWrite Assign Spell: TransWrite: You can use the Notepad for this, as long as you're careful not to put in any font or styling changes. Alternatively, you can use either of the Ed or Edit commands. NOTE: If you are using an Amiga 2000HD or 2500 that has BOOT, WORKBENCH, and WORK icons, you should edit DH0:S/STARTUP-SEQUENCE, not S:STARTUP-SEQUENCE. 2) If you do not wish to do this you MUST double click on the TWAssign icon before using TransWrite or TransSpell the first time after rebooting your computer. Examples: execute TransWrite:Install/HDInstall This is the default. TransWrite will be installed into a drawer called TransWrite which will be located in the Work: partition of your hard disk if one exists, or into SYS: otherwise. execute TransWrite:Install/HDInstall dh3: This installs TransWrite into the DH3: partition. The programs will be installed into a drawer called dh3:TransWrite. execute TransWrite:Install/HDInstall dh3:Applications This is almost the same as the above example. The only difference is that TransWrite will be into a drawer called dh3:Applications/TransWrite.
