M3R Profile - 2/26/90 version: If you haven't done so already, enable System Exclusive on the M3R's MIDI GLOBAL page. Thankfully, this only has to be done once. There's never any need to touch the M3R's front panel once it is configured for X-or. M3R Modes: The M3R can be in either Combi, or Single Program mode. Generally, you'll want to be in Combi mode, although you must go to Program mode to edit a Program. X-or does all this mode switching for you, when you select a patch in the Performance window. M3R Channels: The Sys Ex Channel is the MIDI Global Channel. The M3R also receives on this channel in Program Mode. The M3R's Global Channel is not program- mable via MIDI. The Patch Receive Channel (Mouse Channel) for Combi and Global Patches changes depending on the Combi Type, and (if "Multi") the Timbre selected in the "Display" box (the upper-left-most box in the Combi Patch Edit screen). Combi Patches: Programs are shown by name if there is an "Internal Bank" present. X-or doesn't have "Card Banks", so Card Program names won't be explicit. In the Multi Mode, you will need to flip between Timbres by using the "display" box. Note that when you change Combi Types, the parameters are initialized as they are in the M3R. Changing TO a Multi, however, does not require any initialization, as long as you skip any intermediate steps (i.e. use the Pop-up selector instead of incrementing). The only reason for having splits and layers is too make programming somewhat easier, if that's all you want. ANY split or layer can be done (and much better) with a Multi. Effects: Only one effect's parameters can be shown at a time - use the "edit" box to choose one. Note that the effect values are automatically changed when the effect type changes (this mimics the M3R). Not all of the effect values are exactly as they appear in the M3R's display, but the correlation should be fairly apparent, especially as the M3R's display shows all parameter changes it receives. For example, all time values are in mille- seconds, except where noted. If the note says "(.1s)" , it means that a slider value of 10 is actually 1.0 sec. The only parameter that misses the mark completely is the LFO frequency, which has 217 non-linear values. If anyone is motivated enough to make this parameter a TextBox, and type in all the values, I'd be glad to assist you via the BBS. I would do it myself, but it would add 1K to the Profile, and I'd rather have the 1K than the accurate LFO frequency display. Programs: Should be pretty self-explanatory... Drum Kits and Globals: There is a basic conceptual problem with having an edit buffer for Drum Kits or Globals, as well as storing them in a bank. On one hand, it makes sense for them to be kept with the bank data. But since they are always active, they should be kept with the Performance as well. This dilemma is as of yet unresolved. Currently, all Drum and Global edits must be stored back into the "Internal Bank" (with Bank Update on) before the change is sent to the Synth. (See the V1.1 manual for more on Bank Update). Because of this, you need to save a bank with the X-or perfor- mance if you wish to properly restore the Drum Kit and Global settings. M3R Drum Kits: Drum Kits must be edited in the M3R's Drum mode, which is really a special single Program mode. To access the Drums in a Combination, select a Drum Kit for a Program's oscillator, store the Program in the Internal Bank, and use that Program (which is now your Drum Kit) in the Combination. As far as CARDs go - on the 2nd page of the Global Patch Edit is an internal/card switch which affects Send Bank, Get Bank, and Bank Update - i.e. if set to Card, the "Internal Bank" is really the "Card Bank," and all bulk dumps will go to and from the card. This feature has not been tested as of the 2/4/90 Profile release. PCM and Drum cards are not supported completely, although perhaps "well enough" to get by. The parameters pointing to PCM and Drum Card sounds will not show the sound names, instead you will see "card 1, card 2," etc. E-or Note: Any serious meddling with this Profile is for E-or experts only, due to its unprecedented complexity! Eliminating the "Display" box in Combi Patch Edit (showing all Timbre's params together) would cost 5K in Profile size, and would not be easy to do.
