Korg Z-3 Guitar Synth - 2/15/90 version: The Sys Ex Channel is the Z-3 Base Channel. Make sure the Z-3 is set to the correct base channel (Press Synth Off key, then Function-6 ... change it with the Inc/Dec keys) The Z-3's Base Channel is not programmable via MIDI. I tested the Profile with the Z-3 in both Mode A and Mode B (the switch on back panel) - no difference. Z-3 Modes: The Z-3 can be in Guitar Synth or Sound Generator mode. The mode MUST be changed from the front panel of the Z-3. As far as I know, there are no Sys Ex codes to change these modes. In Sound Gen. mode, the Z-3 operates like a slightly scaled down TX-81Z. In Guitar Synth mode, the synth only plays notes generated by the Guitar. Unfortunately, there's a weird bug in Sound Generator mode. New Program Sounds aren't loaded in the Z-3 when a Program is sent or edited until a Program Change (any Pgm.Chg. on any MIDI Channel) is sent -- they all then work!?! The problem is, there is no bogus Program Change I can devise that will work with everyone's system - it runs the risk of actually DOING something, so I left it out. Also, Sounds may be sent in this mode, but they are not received properly, which is probably a related problem. In Sound Gen. mode, Transpose would seem to have no effect, as well as a few of the other guitar-specific params. Z-3 Programs: The meaning of some params depends on which Z-3 mode (Sound gen. or not) you're in. For instance, MIDI Channel is the transmit channel for each string in Gtr.Synth mode, and it is the receive channel for each of the 6 sound generators in Sound Gen. mode. Bend Range is the max. amount (in semitones) a note will bend in Sound Gen. mode, while in Gtr.Synth mode, it is the actual string bend (in semitones) which equals an octave bend in the synth (for example, a setting of 1 means that a one-semitone string bend will cause a one OCTAVE bend in the synth sound). Note that when you turn the Chnl (MIDI Channel) param Off, it turns the synth sound for that string OFF, no matter what mode you are in. The "Strng Edit Mode" parameter is a special thing I threw in for this Profile. In "Individual" mode, all the parameters are edited seperately as usual. However, in "Strg#1->All" mode any edits to String #1 are automatically copied to all the strings. Strings #2-6 may still be edited individually in this mode. Kind of handy, eh? You can also use Copy Section to copy Strings or String parameters between Strings. Programs are shown by name in the "String Sound" select boxes if there is an "Internal Bank" present (see X-oR vers. 1.1 docs). Sound Edit Mode: The Z-3 has two other modes which concern us; one in which the Sound Edit Buffer is being played by all strings, and another in which the Program's Sound Select parameters choose the sound for each string independently. If the Sound Edit Buffer is shown as "off" in the X-oR Performance, the Z-3 is in the Program Sounds mode. Otherwise it's in Sound Edit mode. When you save an X-oR Performance, pay attention to the mode. If the Z-3 is in Sound Edit Mode, you may not need to save the Bank file, so you could set the Perf Bank flag to off. Otherwise, it is recommended. When you send a Program, or change its Sound Select or Program Change parameters, the current Z-3 Edit Buffer Sound is lost. It still exists in X-oR, but not in the Z-3 (X-oR shows the Sound as "off"). You can restore the Sound Edit Buffer by sending it with X-oR's Send Patch command. This puts the Z-3 in Sound Edit mode. Note that it is possible to change almost all the Program parameters without disturbing the Sound Edit Buffer. If you are in Program Sounds mode (Sound Edit is "off"), and you then go to the sound patch and use X-oR's Get Patch command, you will receive the current sound for String #1. EXPLANATION FOR THE TRULY CURIOUS: The Z-3 does have six edit buffers, it's just that they're all edited together, and you can only "get" from String #1's. You can actually load a Program with 6 different sounds, and when you edit the sound, you'll hear the effect of the same parameter change on all 6 sounds (kind of esoteric, but I thought you'd like to know). Also, when you send a new bank, you'll notice that the Program Sounds stay the same (until the next time the Program is sent or edited); further proof that the sounds are buffered. Although the Sound is very much like a TX-81Z voice, the formats are quite different. It would be possible for the E-oR hacker to create a modified Profile that translates 81Z voices (from either bank or Library format) into Z-3 sounds. Contact me via the BBS if you're interested in doing this. Please note that the Patch Table has no effect unless you are running the Z-3 in Patch Play mode. In this mode, it maps Program Changes 0-63 (otherwise known as 1-64, and shown in Octyl to correspond to the Z-3 display) to Programs 1-128. You don't need this feature at all, unless you already use it in live Performance. With X-oR, it IS practical to edit all 128 Programs to be in the proper order for live Performance! Bob Melvin.
