Dear Amiga 1000 owner: You have purchased the KICKWORK configuration disk from AMIGO BUSINESS COMPUTERS. This program will make a KICKWORK disk from the Kickstart/Workbench revision 1.2. KICKWORK configuration procedure The KICKWORK disk contained in this package requires that a modified copy of Kickstart 1.2 be installed in it. The following procedure will allow you to modify and copy Kickstart 1.2 from your Enhancer package to the KICKWORK disk: 1. Make a backup copy of the unconfigured KICKWORK disk. See the "Introduction to Amiga" manual for information on making backups. 2. Remove all disks from the Amiga. 3. Turn the Amiga's power off for six seconds, then turn it back on. 4. Insert the Kickstart 1.2 disk that comes with your Enhancer package into drive 0. 5. When the Amiga prompts for Workbench, remove the Kickstart disk. 6. Set the write-protect tab on the unconfigured KICKWORK disk to WRITE ENABLE, and insert it into drive 0. 7. The KICKWORK disk will now copy the required Kickstart information from the Amiga's RAM memory. This will take a minute or two. Do not remove the disk or reboot the Amiga until this process is completed. 8. If no errors occur, the program will print "KICKWORK installed". Remove the KICKWORK disk from the Amiga, and write-protect it. You have now completed the KICKWORK configuration process and your disk may now be handled like the normal KICKWORK disk described in your manual. ERRORS "write error" Indicates that either the disk was write protected or an error occurred during writing. If you get this message, make sure that the disk is write-enabled and then go back to step 2. "read error" Indicates that an error occurred while reading the boot block on the KICKWORK disk. This indicates that the KICKWORK disk has been damaged. Make another copy from the master disk as described the step 1 and then go on to step 2. "incorrect KickStart version or wrong disk in drive 0" This message will appear if you booted up the Amiga in step 4 with any version of Kickstart other than the Kickstart 1.2 that is supplied with the Enhancer package. Make sure you have the correct Kickstart disk, then go back to step 2. If this does not solve the problem, make another copy of KICKWORK from your original and go back to step 2. "insufficient memory" The KICKWORK configuration program requires at least 512K of RAM memory. If your Amiga doesn't have 512K memory, and you do not access to one that does, contact Amigo Business Computers to have the KICKWORK disk configured for you. KICKWORK MANUAL The One Disk Boot The KickWork disk you have just purchased is the result of a careful analysis of the interaction and dependencies between the Amiga KickStart Version 1.2 and the Amiga WorkBench Verson 1.2 supplied by Commodore Amiga in The Enhancer Package. This careful attention to detail has resulted in a product which is not only a single disk backup combining KickStart and WorkBench, but a single disk boot, even permitting cold restarts without human intervention. In order to achieve this single disk boot, the first step was to understand what the Amiga needed to satisfy KickStart disk boot, and what KickStart, once booted, expected the WorkBench disk to look like. Then modifications were made to both KickStart and WorkBench and the two were then combined. Note the Kickstart ile on the disk, which shows no size under a LIST command, is not an AmigaDos file! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MODIFY OR DELETE THIS FILE. The next step was to choose a subset of the files from the Workbench disk that would fit in the smaller space available on the KickWork disk and still give maximum functionally. The listing of all the files supplied with Workbench 1.2, with the files removed noted with an (*), follows this product description. If it is necessary to recover some of these files, it may be done by first making sufficient roon on the KickWork disk and then copying them over from a Workbench 1.2 disk. For a step by step description of this process, see page 5. The resulting KickWork may be booted with the disk write protected, as the booting process does NOT alter the disk in any way. This permits the disk to be used in bulleting boards and other applications where power problems could cause a cold reboot. Because of this feature, it is especially suited as a boot disk for systems with hard disks! As with other Workbench disks, the startup-sequence files in the s: directory may be modified to include any commands required for your system. However, be cautious about disk space if some additional files or commands must be added to the KickWork disk. A sample command sequence for determining disk space requirements is on page 5. You will also find tha the use of KickWork at the beginning of any powerup sequence will permit the user to warm-boot ANY other Workbench disk, as the KickStart on the KickWork will be looking for any standard Workbench, not just the KickWork disk. See page 8 for additional information on using KickWork with other WorkBench disks. Amiga Business Computers has made every attempt to test KickWork for processing problems. In the event KickWork does not perform as a combined KickStart/WorkBench under any situation, please contact us at: Amiga Business Computers 43 Harborview Drive, Northport, NY 11768 In New York 516/757-7334 page 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any questions or suggestions concerning KickWork or applications for the Amiga, please contact us at the above location. We hope you enjoy using KickWork as much as we do, and we look forward to supplying Amiga users with more innovative, time-saving hardware and software in the future. As with all software, be sure to backup this disk withe the DISKCOPY program supplied with your KickWork disk; place the original in a safe place, and use the copy. Since this disk has non-AmigaDOS files, using the COPY command to make a KickWork disk will not work. page 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KickWork Directory Listing Trashcan (dir) .info c (dir) AddBuffers Assign BindDrivers Break CD ChangeTaskPri Copy Date Delete Dir DiskChange DiskDoctor Echo Ed edit Else EndCLI EndIf Execute FailAt Fault FileNote If **info Install Join Lab List LoadWb MakeDir Mount NewCLI Path prompt Protect Quit Relabel Rename Run Search SetDate Skip Sort Stack Status Type Version Wait Why *Demos (dir) *.info *Boxes *Boxes.info *Dots *Dots.info *Lines *Lines.info *Spots *Spots.info System (dir) .info CLI CLI.info **diskcopy DiskCopy.info Format Format.info GraphicDump GraphicDump.info IconEd IconEd.info SetMap SetMap.info *Say *Say.info l (dir) Disk-Validator Port-Handler Ram-Handler devs (dir) *Keymaps (dir) *cdn *d *dk *e Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *f *gb *i *is *n *s *usa0 *usa2 printers (dir) *Alphacom_Alphapro_101 *Brother_HR_15XL *CMB_MPS1000 *Diablo_630 *Diablo_Advantage_D25 *Diablo_C-150 *Epson_JX-80 Epson generic *HP_LaserJet *HP_LaserJet_PLUS *ImagewriterII *Okidata_292 *Okidata_92 *Okimate_20 *Qume_LetterPro_20 clipboards (dir) clipboard.device mountlist narrator.device parallel.device printer.device serial.device system-configuration s (dir) Startup-Sequence *t(dir) fonts (dir) *ruby (dir) *12 *15 *8 *opal (dir) *12 *9 *sapphire (dir) *14 *19 *diamond (dir) *12 *20 *garnet (dir) *16 *9 *emerald (dir) *17 *20 topaz (dir) 11 *diamond.font *emerald.font *garnet.font *opal.font *ruby.font *sapphire.font topaz.font libs (dir) diskfont.library icon.library info.library mathieeedoubbas.library mathtrans.library translator.library version.library Empty (dir) .info Utilities (dir) .info Calculator Calculator.info Notepad Notepad.info Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Expansion (dir) .info Clock Clock.info *Demos.info Disk.info Empty.info Expansion.info +kickstart Preferences Preferences.info System.info Trashcan.info Utilities.info Combined directory listing showing idems deleted from KickWork disk (*) and the kickstart file added (+). Files marked with (**) have been modified to work with KickWork. DO NOT REPLACE THEM WITH WORKBENCH 1.2 VERSIONS. RECOVERING/SWAPPING WORKBENCH FILES In order to copy files from WorkBench to KickWork it is necessary to be sure that there is sufficient room on the KickWork disk. Enter the CLI from the WorkBench by double clicking on the CLI icon in the WorkBench window. Enter "info" at the CLI prompt as shown below to get the current space available on the disk. 1>INFO Mounted disks: Unit Size Used Free Full Errs Status None DF0: 880K 1751 7 99% 0 Read/Write KickWork RAM: 1K 1 0 100% 0 Read/Write Volumes available: RAM Disk [Mounted] KickWork [Mounted] Since DF0:, the KickWork disk, has 7 blocks available, and each block has 512 characters, you may add approximately 3000 characters (one block will be used for a file header). Review the above file list if it is necessary to delete files to make room. To determine the size of a file on the disk, use the "List" command. For example, if we wished to chedk "Clock" (and therefore Clock.info, the icon file), the format command would be: 1>list pat clock#? Page 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here, the "pat clock#?" asks the list command to show file information on all files beginning with "clock". The resulting output from this command would be: Clock.info 338 rwed 04-Nov-86 15:32:48 Clock 17448 rwed 04-Nov-86 15:33:17 2 files - 39 blocks used From this listing we would determine that the clock files occupy 17786 bytes, or characters, on the KickWork disk and, therefore, would give us that much disk space if we deleted them. If we know the size of the files we wish to restore (this may be obtained by using the list command on them) we can determine if there would be sufficient space on the KickWork disk for them after removing the clock files. After it has been determined that there is sufficient room to add additional files to the KickWork disk, use "copy" to copy them from the original WorkBench disk to KickWork. If you have only one drive, copy the file "copy" to RAM: as "copy c/copy RAM:" and reference the copy command as "RAM:copy" when the KickWork disk has been removed to allow copying from the WorkBench disk. The command sequence to copy files to the KickWork disk with one drive is: 1>copy df0:c/copy ram: (Put the disk with the file to be copied in df0:) 1>ram:copy df0:file ram: (Replace KickWork in drive df0:) 1>copy ram:file df0: Page 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKUPS As with all software, it is advisable to backuy save up to 12 different games per saved game directory. If you "run out" of saved game spaces in your saved game directory, (and you don't want to create more saved game directories), you may reuse one of the 12 spaces. To change the name of a saved game, just enter CTRL-C or CTRL-X to clear the line, and type a new one. RESTORING A GAME Type "restore game" and press RETURN or press F-7 to restore a previously saved game. You will be asked where you saved the game. To accept the default directory, press RETURN. Otherwise, clear the line, type the name of the "saved game" disk followed by ":" and the directory on which you saved the game, and press RETURN. Now choose the game you wish to restore by moving the pointer and selecting it by pressing RETURN. REFERENCE CARD HOW TO PLAY SLOTS 1. Walk to the machine. Type "PLAY SLOTS". 2. When you are finished, type "EXIT SLOTS". HOW TO PLAY BLACKJACK The object is to get as close to 21 points as possible without going over. Face cards count 10 points each, and aces count as 1 or 11 points, whichever is to your advantage. You are dealt 2 cards to begin with. HOW TO BET Sit down at the table. Type "BET". You will be asked to specify an amount. (This house only accepts bets in $2 increments). INSURANCE When the house dealer shows an "Ace Up." You will be asked if you want insurance. Insurance equals half of your wager. Use insurance cautiously. If the dealer has blackjack (21) you will be paid off at 2 to 1 odds. SURRENDER If you do not like the odds after reviewing your initial two cards, you may "SURRENDER." Half of your wager will be refunded to you. TAKING CARDS After receiving your first two cards, you must decide if you want to take more or to "STAND" on what you've got. Type the appropriate option. DOUBLING DOWN You are allowed to "double down" if your cards show a value of 10 or 11. Your bet is doubled and you are dealt one more card. SPLITS If the house deals you a pair (any two like cards, i.e. two tens) you may "SPLIT" them. This move allows you to play two hands and double your bet. TO QUIT PLAYING Type "STAND UP" at the end of a hand. TALKING TO WOMEN Learning this will be your number one priority while in Lost Wages. When you want to talk to a woman, type "TALK TO THE WOMAN". If you happen to get her name, type "TALK TO (NAME)". Women can be loads of fun. They are great to "LOOK" at. They are fun to "DANCE" with. You could even try to "KISS" them. Nothing is off-limits if you "PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT". Women are also fickle. Do not take "no" for an answer. Be persistent. With a little sweat and a lot of luck you could wind up being a happy guy. TRANSPORTING YOURSELF Getting from place to place is very crucial. To walk somewhere, simply use the direction keys, your joystick or a mouse. You can move Larry practically anywhere. TAXI SERVICE Catching cabs in a convenient way to get around Lost Wages. Look for taxi stand signs near the curb at most major establishments. Please note that you should not keep a taxi waiting.
