Many other packages are limited to applying effects to the whole image - not to selected areas with such versatility and subtlety. An image might be perfect except for a section that needs sharpening or darkening for example. With Photogenics this operation is simple - just select the desired effect and spray on with the airbrush, draw with pencil or chalk pastel. Photogenics provides many different drawing tools to give your compositions a real life look and feel. If you are unhappy with the result then change the effect or the colour - Photogenics will "redo" your image and you can see your changes immediately. If you have found that you have overdone the painting you can "spray back" to the original image using the right mouse button easily removing the "paint". The white page will appear in its own window and a small icon of it will appear in the image icon window at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on the white page with the left mouse button will paint on it. This paint can be applied in a number of ways via the Icon toolbar. These Icons are (Left to right, top to bottom.) Dotted freehand painting tool. Continuous freehand painting tool. Straight line painting tool. Filled freehand painting tool. Curved line painting tool. Fill area painting tool. Rectangle painting tool. Polygon painting tool. Cicle painting tool. Ellipse painting tool. Zoom in. Zoom out. Cut. Pick colour. Modes. Modes options. Brushes. Brush settings. Fill paint layer. Clear paint layer. FIX. Paint can be applied with any painting tool in any style ( ie, Airbrush, Charcoal, Ball-point pen, etc), these brushes can be selected via the brushes icon on the toolbar. The brush you have selected may be too big or soft, these setting can be adjusted via the Brush setting icon on the toolbar. The paint that has been doodled onto the white page can be painted back off with the right mouse button. Once you are happy use the FIX icon on the toolbar to "lock" the paint. Now paint over the other paint and click on the colour bar at the top of the toolbar, the palette requester will appear, and a new colour can be selected; when you're happy with the colour, click on the use button. To get rid of the palette window click on the small square on the top left hand corner. The paint is now the new selected colour, if you now change the Mode form Paint to Negative (these can be selected via the mode icon on the toolbar),the area that has been painted will be Negatived, more can be applied or removed until it is fixed then a new paint layer can be used. If you have fixed your selection but are then not happy with it, use the Undo in the the options menu. Move the doodle into the secondary window, this can be done either by going to the menu Options> Use as secondary, or by simply clicking on the icon on the images bar and dragging it into the far right square called second. Go to the menu Project> Open and load in a image. Paint on the image (Make sure the transparency is set to zero in the brush settings window) and change the paint mode to rubthru, the doodle is shown through the face image. Now try Rubtexture, Displace map and Rubtint. Now put the mode back to Rubthru and try adjusting the transparency to 50% and the offset (Via the modes setting icon on the toolbar). ALPHA CHANNEL. The Alpha channel is effectivly a Greyscale 8Bit mask. That means that a smoothly masked off area can be created easily for protecting some parts of the image. An Alpha channel will protect and mask out areas that are black, and will allow painting to continue where there is white. Operation Photogenics works a little differently to conventional paint and image processing programs. When you apply paint to an image it is drawn into a separate 'paint layer' that is then combined with the image to give the image you see on screen. To permanently combine this layer with the image you need to FIX your changes making them permanent and clearing the layer so you can apply more effects. This system gives great flexibility for applying and removing paint and changing the effect/colour of the paint to see what the final result will look like. To give an example, you may wish to alter the skin tone of a digitised image of a friend. You could start by selecting a dark tone and drawing over the face with the Tint effect. The affected area can be constantly revised by adding/removing paint with the left and right mouse button. After covering the whole face you may find that the tone is too dark. At this point, before FIXing, you can alter the chosen colour or effect to give different results. You may wish to try some of the special effects such as Solarize to see what that would look like. All this is possible with Photogenics. Once a satisfactory effect has been achieved then the changes can be FIXed. Transparency/Pressure When applying paint, some effects can be too obvious. Subtle effects can be achieved by increasing the level of transparency allowing some of the original image to be seen underneath the new paint. Transparency affects most of the program operation including Compose. Transparency can be altered by opening the brush settings window from the toolbar. Secondary Buffer Some effects require you to have a picture in the secondary buffer, for example the RubThru paint mode - this enables you to paint through from your selected image to the image in the secondary buffer. You can select the image you want in the secondary buffer by dragging the icon into the Secondary box in the images window (at the bottom of the screen), or by selecting the image and pressing the '2' key. Alpha Channels An Alpha Channel is an invisible mask that sits over your image. Any paint or effects you apply will only affect the parts of the image not covered by the alpha channel. Paint will affect the current image in proportion to the brightness of the alpha channel - dark areas on the Alpha channel will prevent the paint showing through, light areas will allow the paint to be visible. Undo Photogenics has an undo feature which allows the removal of previously FIXed changes. Selecting Undo a second time will replace the changes. Painting onto the image or any other operation will destroy the undo buffer. Please note that this option has no effect on the paint layer! Limited memory situations may make the undo feature impossible. @endnode @node toolbar "Toolbar Options" The buttons are listed from the top left to bottom right, horizontally then vertically. @{b}Freehand:@{ub} This selects standard freehand mode. As you draw a stream of dots is drawn with the current brush. The faster you move the mouse the greater the gap between the dots. You can also use the right mouse button to erase. @{b}Continuous Freehand:@{ub} This selects continuous freehand mode. As you move the mouse with the left mouse button held down a continuous line is drawn with the currently selected brush. You can also use the right mouse button to erase in a continuous line. @{b}Line:@{ub} Select this to draw a straight line from one point to another. Select the first point with the mouse, hold down the mouse button, move the mouse to position the end point for the line, and release the mouse button. The left button draws a line, the right mouse button erases along the path of the line. @{b}Filled Freehand:@{ub} Filled Freehand allows you to draw an irregular-shaped object on the screen which is then filled. Select your start point, hold down the mouse button, and move the mouse around to draw the borders of your object. Release the mouse to finish the object. The left mouse button draws an object, the right mouse button will erase paint inside the area of the object. @{b}Curved Line:@{ub} This tool allows you to draw curved lines. Draw a line on the image as previously shown for the standard line tool, and once you release the mouse button you can change the line into a curve, passing through the two end-points of the line and a third point you can now select. By clicking on the same button you used to draw the line you can draw (or erase) the curve. Selecting the other button will cancel the curve operation. @{b}Fill:@{ub} Use this tool to Fill an area. Clicking on the icon a second time shows the current tolerance and smoothness settings. A tolerance can be given to fill surrounding pixels based on their 'closeness' to the colour of the pixel clicked on. Smoothness will use this tolerance to alter the intensity of the fill. @{b}Rectangle:@{ub} Select this to draw a rectangle. Select one corner with the mouse, hold down the mouse button, move the mouse to position the opposite corner for the rectangle and release the mouse button. The left button draws a rectangle, the right button erases along the path of the rectangle. Filled rectangle - This can be selected by clicking on the Rectangle icon a second time. It draws solid (filled) rectangles, and operates in the same way as the standard rectangle described above. @{b}Polygon:@{ub} This allows you to draw a multi-sided irregular shape. First click the left or right mouse button on your image where you want to start the polygon, and release the button. Move the mouse to the next point. Click on the same mouse button as before to add another point, or click on the other mouse button to finish the polygon (your last point will be joined up to the first). Filled polygon - This can be selected by clicking on the icon a second time. It draws solid (filled) polygons, but otherwise works in a similar way to the standard polygon drawing method described above. @{b}Circle:@{ub} To draw a circle, select the centre point for your circle, keep the mouse button held down and drag the mouse away from the centre to increase the size. Release the mouse button to draw the circle at that size. Filled circle - This can be selected by clicking on the icon a second time. It draws solid (filled) circles, but otherwise works in a similar way to the standard circle drawing method described above. @{b}Ellipse:@{ub} To draw an ellipse, select the centre point and the edge point as described above for circle. Filled ellipse - The Filled ellipse tool can be selected by clicking on the icon a second time. This draws solid (filled) ellipses, but otherwise works as described above. @{b}Zoom:@{ub} Click in middle of the area to be zoomed in on, and drag the mouse to select the size of the area to magnify. @{b}Zoom Out:@{ub} This zooms out, showing as much of the image as possible. @{b}Cut:@{ub} To cut out part of the image to use as another image, select this tool. Select a rectangle of the image to cut out using the left mouse button (in exactly the same way as previously shown for the rectangle tool). Cut Freehand - You can cut out an irregular area of the image using the freehand cut tool (click on the cut icon again to select this tool). Select the area in the same way as described in filled freehand above. @{b}Mode:@{ub} Unless already open, the Modes window is opened allowing selection of a new paint mode. After you have chosen a new paintmode the window will close. @{b}Mode Options:@{ub} Many modes have options controlling how the effect is applied. This button allows access to those options. See the section on modes for descriptions of the effect options. If the mode has no options this icon will be ghosted. @{b}Brush:@{ub} The brush window is opened allowing selection of a new brush mode. Once the new brush has been chosen the window will close. @{b}Brush Options:@{ub} The Brush options window is opened. Size, pressure, and transparency can be altered to give the desired effect. This window may be left open. @{b}Fill Paint Layer:@{ub} The paint layer is filled completely. This has the effect of applying the current paint mode to the entire image. Care must be taken when using this icon as it will obscure any painting not FIXed. @{b}Clear Paint Layer:@{ub} The paint layer is cleared. Care must be taken when using this icon as all changes made that have not been FIXed will be lost.. @{b}FIX:@{ub} The current changes are permanently FIXed onto the image. You can then select a different colour and/or paint mode without affecting your previous alterations. @endnode @node Menus "The Menu Options" Many of the functions in Photogenics can be selected from the menu bar. Photogenics uses a standard Amiga pull-down menu system. Use the right mouse button to select your menu item. Each menu item is described below. @{b}Project Menu@{ub} New Black Page Opens a requester asking for size and opens a new black image. White Page Opens a requester asking for size and opens a new white image. Soft white Opens a requester asking for size and opens a new, soft white image. Select colour Opens a requester asking for size and opens a blank Image coloured in the currently selected colour. Open Open a new image. The file type will automatically be detected by the program. Open as Loads a file. The file is then automatically selected as Secondary the secondary image. Alpha Channel Loads a file. The file is then automatically selected as the current alpha channel. Hidden Loads a file. The file is loaded but no window is opened. Its icon will appear in the Images window. Save IFF-24 Save the active image in IFF-24 format. JPEG Save the active image in JPEG format. Clone This makes an identical copy of the currently active image. Rename This option allows you to choose a new name for the currently selected image. Close The currently selected image is closed. All changes will be lost if your image has not been saved. Close All After asking for confirmation, all open images are closed. About This displays interesting information about the program the authors and other useful facts. Quit After confirmation the program quits. @{b}Options Menu@{ub} Undo/Redo This undoes the last permanent changes. You cannot undo a paint operation which has not been fixed, simply use the right mouse button to 'unpaint'. Discard Undo This releases the Undo buffer of the active image to free memory. The option is ghosted if the active image has not had any changes FIXed. Discard All Undos This releases all the Undo buffers for all images. Use this if you are running low on memory. Use as Image This option reverts the selected image back to a normal image window if it has previously been selected as either the alpha channel or the secondary image. If the currently selected image is not the secondary or alpha channel this option does nothing. Use as Secondary The currently selected image is set as the secondary image. This image can then be used with compose or with paintmodes requiring a secondary image (eg, RubThru). Use as Alpha Channel The currently selected image is set as the alpha channel image. This image is then used as a 'mask' for painting operations on other images. Hide/Show Window The currently selected image is hidden (the window is closed). Closing the window this way does NOT affect the image data and does not lose the changes you have made to the image. This option can be reversed by double clicking on the image icon in the images window to reopen the picture window, or by reselecting this option. Restore Window Size The image window is resized back to the size that Photogenics thinks is best for display on the current screen mode. Normally this will fit without covering up too much of the screen, but will be no bigger than the actual size of the image. Image Menu Scale Select New Size You can select the new size by moving the sliders or by selecting a preset size (as with the New image request) or you can specify the new size as being 25%, 50%, 100%, 200% or 400% of the original size in either the X and/or Y directions. You can select to ignore the aspect (both X and Y can be scaled by different percentages), to keep the aspect locked when changing the size of one dimension the other dimension is resized to keep the aspect ratio the same, or to keep the size (the area of the original picture is kept - when increasing one axis the other axis gets smaller). Double Size The image size is doubled. Double Vertical The image height is doubled. Double Horizontal The image width is doubled. Halve Size The image size is halved. Halve Vertical The image height is halved. Halve Horizontal The image width is halved. Rotate 90 degrees The whole image is rotated 90 degrees clockwise. 180 degrees The whole image is rotated 180 degrees clockwise. 270 degrees The whole image is rotated 270 degrees clockwise (or 90 degrees counter-clockwise). @{b}Settings Menu@{ub} Screen Mode Select which CyberVision64 screen mode you want to run Photogenics in. Note that the screen mode is purely used for the visual display and does not affect the quality of the images you are creating - you can still create high-resolution 24-bit colour images even when running on a low resolution 15-bit screen. Undo Enabled On low memory systems it may be necessary to disable the undo feature. This will free memory for loading more/larger images but the undo feature will not be available. Close Workbench Photogenics will try and close the Workbench screen to free memory (or to open it again if it has already been closed). WARNING! Certain Amiga configurations running are affected by a bug in Kickstart that can cause your computer to crash if you try and re-open Workbench once closed (or if you quit the program once Workbench has been closed). Make sure you save your files before using this option. Memory Display Enable or disable the memory display in the title bar. Clock Enable or disable the clock display in the title bar. Close Image warnings When disabled you will NOT receive any warnings before image buffers are closed. Create .bak files Normally, if you overwrite a file with another image, the old file is lost forever. With this option enabled the old file will be renamed as .bak before the new file is saved. If you are running from hard disk and have plenty of free space you will probably prefer to select this option. Tablet mode Some graphic tablets (eg. Wacom) will have problems when working with Photogenics. Selecting this option will make Photogenics work slightly slower, but will allow these tablets to be used. Save Settings The current settings will be saved to disk. If you do not save your settings then all the options you have selected from this menu will have to be reset every time you load Photogenics. @endnode @node FileFormats "File Formats supported" GIF Format: Compuserve GIF87, GIF89a (Graphics Interchange Format) Load: Yes Save: No The GIF format is popular on the PC and other computer systems. It is well defined and well compressed, but it is limited to only 256 colours so other formats (mainly JPEG) are now replacing it in common use. IFF-24 Format: IFF-24 Load: No (IFF-24 files are loaded automatically by the ILBM loader) Save: Yes This is the standard 24-bit IFF ILBM image format. ILBM Format: IFF-ILBM (InterLeaved BitMap) Load: Yes (2-256 colour, Extra-Halfbrite, HAM6, HAM8 & IFF-24) Save: No IFF-ILBM is the standard graphics file format of the Amiga. While it is not ideally suited for 24-bit graphics it is supported by almost every Amiga application that can create or use graphics. If you want to load in a graphics file created by another Amiga program, chances are it will be an IFF-ILBM file of some sort. JPEG Format: JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) JFIF Load: Yes Save: Yes JPEG is the most popular format currently for 24-bit graphics. It compresses images by applying 'lossy' compression (it cuts down detail in the image). Because of this you will not get an exact copy of the image you created, but it will be very close and only a fraction of the size it would be when saved with IFF-24, for example. When saving an image you are asked for a Quality level. At 100 the image is stored as well as JPEG can, at lower rates it tries to compress the image down more, so the quality of your saved image is lower. Always save images at 100% quality if you intend to continue working on them (or use the IFF-24 file format. ). @endnode @node Brushes "Brushes" PhotogenicsLite comes with a variety of realistic brush types. Different brushes allow you to choose how your chosen colour and effect is applied to the image. Airbrush gives a smooth flow of paint with soft edges, others give different textures to your painting like chalk pastel. Airbrush The airbrush is selected by default when you start Photogenics, and is usually the best brush to use for image processing. Pencil Pencil is one of most realistic of the artists tools in Photogenics. Altering its pressure can give a good deal of control over what you draw. For instance, if you were drawing a picture you might do a rough outline with the pressure set to 20% and the size set to 1 or 2. To subtly shade in a picture, you should set the size to 3 or 4, and the pressure to 3-5%. However, if you want to do something like cross hatching, then reduce the size to 1 or 2 and the pressure to 1-15%. Chalk Pastel Chalk Pastel is best for shading in quite large areas, and works best with a large brush size and a pressure of about 20% This brush is very good at blending colours together, as the colour builds up gradually as you move the mouse (unlike the airbrush which builds up colour as you press the mouse button). WaterColour Watercolour builds up colour slowly so that it doesn't quite obscure what you are drawing over. For best results, start shading with lighter colours and gradually build up the amount of colour. Also, with large brush sizes move the mouse slowly, at around the same speed you would use a normal paint brush. Note that this works best on a very fast machine, due to the large brush size needed. Felt Tip Felt tip may not be the most used artistic medium, but Photogenics has a good rendition of one anyway. As expected, if you go over a dark colour with a lighter colour, nothing will happen. So it will only work on a light coloured background. Also, if you go over one colour with another colour, the colours will mix like real ink. For example if you go over orange with magenta you will get red, and if you go over yellow with cyan then you will get green. If however you go over a colour with one that doesn't mix, then you will get black, ie, going over red with blue. It is impossible to draw on black paper with felt tip pens for this reason! @endnode @node PaintModes "Paint Mode descriptions" Definitions - Secondary: Whether the effect requires a picture in the secondary buffer Uses Colour: Whether the effect uses the currently selected colour Options: Variable parameters that can be changed with the Mode Option button (not all modes have options that can be changed) @{b}AddNoise@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Noise type and Noise Amount (Percentage) Description : Adds `noise' to an image (to simulate bad TV reception or a grainy image) There are several types of noise that can be applied: Random Noise: The image is mixed with totally random pixels. Max Luma Limited: The image is mixed with random grey pixels, but the resultant pixels are never brighter than the original. Min Luma Limited: The image is mixed with random grey pixels, but the resultant pixels are never darker than the original. Hue Fixed Noise: The image is mixed with random grey pixels. Blue Noise: The image is mixed with random blue pixels (blue is the darkest colour component, and as such Blue Noise can be much more subtle than other noises). Nice 'stone' effects can be created by using AddNoise followed by Blur. @{b}AlterHue@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : Yes Options : None Description : Change hue to current colour. A powerful type of Tint operation that changes the hue (or colour) of an image without changing the brightness or saturation (so coloured pixels change but grey pixels remain grey). Compare with Tint. @{b}Balance@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : -250 to 250 for Red, Green and Blue channels. Description : Allows individual adjustment of the brightness of each of the three colour components - Red, Green and Blue - to adjust the tone of an image to correct it or to add a colour cast. @{b}Blur@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Blur type Description : Blurs an image by averaging the values of each pixel with its surrounding pixels using a variety of blur methods. Current Blur types are selected with the Paint Mode Options: Simple 3x3 The default blur, this blurs the image without losing too much of the original sharpness. Cross 3x3 Cross blur 3x3 is a very simple fast blur. It ignores any differences between diagonal pixels and operates only on the four pixels immediately surrounding each pixel. Cross 5x5 This is similar in operation to Cross 3x3, but takes the average of a larger area, which can result in smoother output. Small Gaussian 3x3 A powerful blur which is more suited to smoothing out sharp edges than other blurs, but is more likely to lose fine detail. Large Gaussian 5x5 This is a larger and more powerful version of the Gaussian Blur Star 5x5 This Blur type only blurs across diagonal pixels, this can be very useful for removing certain dither patterns from images without destroying the overall sharpness. On other images it can produce interesting effects. Heavy 3x3 This is a very powerful blur - you are highly likely to lose fine detail when using this. Heavy 5x5 An even larger and more powerful version of the Heavy blur. Anti-Alias (to dark background) This does a normal blur, but only changes the pixel colour if the blurred result is lighter than the original colour. This means you can add smooth edges to sharp bright objects on a dark background. Anti-Alias (to light background) This works like the previous Anti-Alias blur mode, except it only changes the colour if the blurred result is darker than the original pixel colour. This can add smooth edges to sharp dark objects on a brighter background. @{b}Brightness@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Brightness level -250 to 250 Description : Affects the brightness of the selected area. Option values above zero will brighten an image, values below zero will darken an image. (Fig. Shows before and after.) @{b}Cloner@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Line to select offset. Description : Cloner is one of the most useful features of Photogenics. Selecting the cloner allows you to duplicate features from one part of an image to another. Use this to copy a feature (a cloud, tree, house, person) seamlessly to another part of the picture, or clone the background to remove features from photographs. To select which area of the image to copy from, and where to copy it to, click on the Mode Options button in the toolbar and select a point in the centre of the area you want to copy from. Keep the mouse button held down and drag the mouse to the center of the area you want to copy to (a line will be drawn showing you the relative movement that cloner will then use). When you use cloner from now on the brush will paint using a copy of part of the image based on the offset you have chosen. @{b}Contrast@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Contrast level -255 to 255 Description : Adjust the contrast level of the image in a similar way to the contrast settings on a televison or monitor. -256 is no contrast (image goes completely grey) and +256 is full contrast. @{b}Defocus@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Defocus power Description : Defocus is a very powerful image blur effect. All sharp detail in an image will be lost leaving only a heavily blurred colour image. This does a similar effect to the Gaussian Blur menu item (although it is not as accurate, it is MUCH faster). @{b}Emboss@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : Yes (if colour background selected) Options : Light source, Grey/Colour background, Grey/Colour edges. Description : 'Embosses' an image by creating an image with the appearance of the image pressed into it. You can select the direction that the light appears to be shining from (the light source) and whether you want the background colour to be grey (default) or the currently selected colour (very bright or very dark colours do not work well with Emboss). You can also select whether you want the edges of the image to be grey or to retain some of their original colours. @{b}Flip@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : X axis or Y axis Description : Flips the selected area around the centre of the image (either the X axis or Y axis). @{b}GreyScale@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Conversion type. Description : Convert to grey scale. There are several different algorithms you can select from to create your grey scale image. Video Weighted: The image is converted using a standard algorithm where the different colour components (red, green and blue) are mixed together based on their comparitive brightness. This will give an accurate rendition of the image to greyscale. Simple Average: The red, green and blue components are added together and divided by three. This is faster than Video Weighting, and sometimes gives a more pleasing result. Brightest: The greyscale image is created by selecting the brightest of the red, green and blue colour components. This generally gives a brighter image, but some colours (eg. blue) may convert to unexpectedly bright areas in your grey scale image. Darkest: The darkest of the three colour components (red, green and blue) is used as the new grey scale component. This usually gives very dark images, and may result in large black areas! Median: The median of the three colour components (ie. when arranged in order of brightness, the middle value is chosen) is used for the grey scale image. This usually results in some areas being much brighter than expected and others being darker than expected. Red Filter: Only the red component is used for the grey scale conversion. Red filters used in black and white photography are often used to subdue ambient light and to make clouds more brilliant. Green Filter: Only the green colour component is used. Green filters are good for converting portrait photos to grey scale - the colour of skin and lips is slightly darkened. Blue Filter: Only the blue colour component is used for the grey scale image. Blue areas remain bright, red and green areas turn black. Cyan Filter: The blue and green colour components are averaged for the grey scale image. Any red in the original image turns black. Magenta Filter: Only the red and blue components are used for the grey scale image. Any green in the original image will turn black. Yellow Filter: The yellow filter is another popular photographic filter. Contrast is improved in landscape images and skin tones are lightened and freckles are softened. @{b}Limit@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : Yes Options : Minimum or Maximum Description : Limits the minimum or maximum colour range in the picture to the colour you have selected. If a colour is brighter (or darker, if Minimum mode is selected) in either the red, green or blue levels to your selected colour then the components are rounded off to the level of the colour seletced (so for Maximum, if a medium grey was selected, no pixel brighter than medium grey would remain, and if for Minimum, no pixel darker than medium grey would remain). @{b}LineArt@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Colour/Greyscale, Normal/Inverse Description : Simulates a line-art drawing of the image by detecting the borders of an image. Very effective with photographs. You may want to change the contrast levels of a picture before or after using lineArt to enhance the effect. You can limit lineart to using grey scales by selecting grey scale in the mode options. You can switch between normal (white background) and inverse (dark background). @{b}Maximum@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : None Description : Sets the current pixel to the value of the brightest red, green and blue values from the surrounding 8 pixels. Makes bright objects 'expand' into darker areas. @{b}Median@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : None Description : Sets the current pixel to the median value of the current pixel and its eight immediate neighbours. This spreads areas of similar colours and completely obliterates dithering and other fine detail. Repeated use on an image creates very realistic 'oil painting' effects. @{b}Minimum@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : None Description : The reverse of Maximum. Dark areas expand into brighter areas. @{b}Monochrome@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : Yes Options : None Description : Convert to a purely black and white (2 colour) image. All pixels darker than the selected colour are turned black, others turn white. This works best if the selected colour is Mid Grey, but you can change the colour and Use to find the best value. This can produce excellent Alpha Channels (remember to Blur the image after fixing it!). @{b}Negative@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Mode Description : Invert the image or the image brightness depending on the selected mode. These modes are: Normal (RGB space invert): Each colour (R, G and B) is inverted. This makes bright areas dark, dark areas bright and also inverts the colours to their direct opposite on the colour wheel, ie, red goes to cyan, yellow goes to blue, green goes to magenta, cyan goes to red, blue goes to yellow, magenta goes to green, black goes to white and white goes to black. Luma Invert (HLS space): This inverts the brightness but leaves the colour of the image the same, so pink pixels stay pink, but dark pink pixels turn to light pink pixels and vice versa, black turns white and white turns black. Fully saturated colours (eg, bright yellow) are not affected by Luma Invert. This can produce quite unusual ghostly images when applied to photographs of people. Brightness Invert (HSB space): This inverts the brightness of each pixel. Light areas become dark, dark areas become light. Dark - saturated colours become bright - saturated colours, so you may see patches of bright-coloured pixels appear unexpectedly - this is normal. Saturation and Brightness Invert (HSB space): This inverts both the brightness and saturation of each pixel. Light colourful areas become dark grey, dark grey areas become light and take on bright unusual colours. Can produce unusual and interesting results on many images. You may need to blur the image after use to remove sharp colour changes and other colour artifacts. @{b}Paint@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : Yes Options : None Description : Simple paint. The current selected area is replaced with the selected colour, EXCEPT that certain brushes can work in a different way. Some paint tools (Felt Tip Pen, for example) mix paint in a different way, so when a light colour goes over a darker colour the darker colour shows through. @{b}Pixelise@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Width and height of pixels Description : Converts the selected area to a 'blocky' image. This effect is often used to hide the identity of people on TV police programmes. @{b}Posterise@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Colour levels Description : Creates a version of the image using only a few shades (based on the colour levels setting). This produces an effect not dissimilar to the images from 1960s 'pop art' posters. @{b}Randomise@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Maximum displacement Description : Randomly shifts the pixels in an image up to a chosen distance from their current location. This can make pictures 'explode' into a cloud of pixels (at a high setting), or merely give images a fuzzy, grainy look (at a low setting, best Blurred afterwards). @{b}Roll@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : X and Y offset Description : Rolls the picture (or selected area) through a set pixel offset. The picture wraps round at the edges. @{b}RubThru@{ub} Secondary : Yes Uses colour : No Options : X and Y offset. Description : Rub through to the secondary image. Pixels are replaced with the equivalent pixel on the secondary image. If the secondary image is not exactly aligned you can alter the X and Y offset parameters to better align it. WARNING! If you alter these parameters make sure you set them back to zero before using Compose, otherwise the results you get may not be what you wanted! @{b}Saturation@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : -256 to 256 Description : Raise or lower the saturation of a selected part of the image. Colours get stronger with higher saturation and weaker with low saturation. If you raise saturation heavily then very light colours may appear to turn to random colours. This is not a fault with Saturation but an inevitable side effect of how saturation works. If you Blur the image before using saturation you may solve this problem. @{b}Sharpen@{ub} Secondary : No Uses paint : No Options : Sharpness (1 to 9) Description : Edges in the current picture are detected and sharpened to enhance the image. Larger values produce a stronger sharpening effect. NOTE. The original Sharpen provided with Photogenics 1.0/1.1 worked differently. This can be accessed by using the Matrix paintmode and loading the `old_sharpenĠ matrix. @{b}ShiftHue@{ub} Secondary : No Uses paint : No Options : Shift amount (degrees) Description : Any colour can be described as a combination of three components - Hue, Saturation and Value. Shifting the hue can be used to alter the colour component only. @{b}ShiftRGB@{ub} Secondary : No UsesPaint : No Options : Backwards Yes/No Description : Photogenics images are stored as RGB (Red Green Blue) data. By swapping the R, G and B values different false-colour effects can be produced. Default is R goes to G, G goes to B and B goes to R. This direction can be reversed with the Backwards option. @{b}Solarize@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Normal/Inverse Description : This simulates a classical photographic trick, deliberately exposing a negative before developing to produce unusual colouring and shading. This will enhance the darker colours but invert the brighter colours. You can select between normal and inverse solarize. Inverse solarize is exactly the same as doing normal solarize and then inverting it. @{b}Tile@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : No Options : Width and height of tile Description : This fills the selected area with tiles, each tile being a miniature copy of the full screen. You can select the width and height of the tiles. @{b}Tint@{ub} Secondary : No Uses colour : Yes Options : Type Description : With Normal tint, this replaces the colour of the selected area with the chosen colour while retaining the brightness of the original pixels, so the detail (features in the original picture) remain, but tinted to a new colour. The new tint modes work slightly differently: Lowlights: This colours the dark areas of the image with the selected colour. Midtones: The midtones of the image are coloured with the selected colour. Highlights: The image highlights are coloured with the selected colour. @endnode
