---------------------------< ParNET Readme File >------------------------------ WaveLink comes with a special version of the parallel port networking software, ParNET. This version of ParNET includes changes that have simplified the use and improved the performance in terms of speed and error checking. ============================================================================ INSTALLING THE NETWORK FILESYSTEM: Connect the parallel port of your two Amigas using the ParNET cable supplied with WaveLink. *** IMPORTANT *** BE SURE THAT BOTH COMPUTERS ARE POWERED OFF WHEN CONNECTING THE PARNET CABLE TO THE PARALLEL PORT OF BOTH MACHINES. THE PARALLEL PORT IS VERY SENSITIVE TO STATIC ELECTRICITY AND YOU MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU DO NOT TURN OFF THE MACHINES BEFORE USING THIS CABLE. The WaveLink installer will perform the following commands: Copy parnet.device to your DEVS: directory Copy netpnet-handler to the C: directory Copy netpnet-server to the C: directory Be sure to run the WaveLink installer on both both machines. ParNet has an new quiet option that is used by default. The quiet option inhibits error requesters that report problems with the network. If you are running a long cable and are noticing performance problems then you may want to remove the quiet option by modifying the script file for boot_host and boot_client. For example, to use ParNET without the quiet option the boot scripts would read: For the Host machine: NETPNET-SERVER HOST NETPNET-HANDLER HOST For the Client machine: NETPNET-SERVER CLIENT NETPNET-HANDLER CLIENT If you would like ParNET to start every time you boot up your Amigas then you should drag or copy the ParNET boot icons to the WBStartup directories on both machines. ============================================================================ RUNNING THE NETWORK FILESYSTEM: ParNET is easy to use. Click on the boot_host icon to start ParNET on one machine. Click on the boot_client icon to start parNET on the other machine. You can now access files on the other machine by addressing the NET: device. For example, dir Net: will show you the contents of the root directory of the other machine. NET: is now ready for access. If you want to use NET: with the workbench, you must provide an icon file for each device you mount on the remote machine. You can do this by copying any drawer-type icon file to NET:devicename.info after the specified devicename has been mounted. CD NET:DH0 ; make sure DH0 is mounted COPY SYS:C.INFO NET:DH0.INFO ; make sure DH0 has an icon file You only need to do this once for hard disks and other permanent devices, but RAM: will 'forget' this icon every time you reboot, so you will need to recopy the icon each time. (NOTE: A file will appear in the root of the remote device called 'node.rinfo'. This is where NET: stores the icon file you give it. Deleting the node.rinfo file will remove your device's icon.) Note that if you do a DIR of NET:, you will always see the .info files for your mounted remote devices EVEN IF THEY DO NOT EXIST. NET: assumes the icon files are there, and doesn't go check unless it needs to.
