>3 Worms: A500 version, A1200/CD32 Version : Price 29.99 Reviewer: Converse >2 March the 1st was the day, when Mark burst into the A.F office shouting: Worms!! I`ve got Worms! Being the smart arse that I am, I replied "There`s tablets they can give you to get rid of them". "No! No" he replied "The Game! I`ve got the game, it was in the computer shop today!". O.K I lied, Marks reply was a little more insulting than that, but I won`t bore you with the details. O.K, let`s get down to business, Worms, to some; horrible little creatures that survive even after chopping them in half, to others cute adorable little creatures, well, that`s what Team 17 must have thought and that`s what you will think when you`ve played Team 17`s Worms. The game itself has a very Lemming`ish feel, in that it involves pointing at little creatures and deciding what to make them do, but this time there`s no bridge building or Parachuting. No, instead you have a huge array of weapons and destructive tools, for example a blow torch, (which is the Lemmings equivalent to a digger or basher) worm will burn through rock or trees and thus make a hole/path to another part of the scenery. I`ll go through the other tools and weapons later on. The object of the game is for you to lead your small army of worms and fight against your opponent, this could be the computer or another friend. You can have up to 4 players fighting against each other or you and your mate can gang up against the computer, you can even have two teams of two! Once you`ve selected who you are going to play against you are presented with the games main screen. By pressing the right mouse button when it is your turn you will be shown a bar at the bottom of the screen, this has a list of tools and weapons available to you and your mob of worms. There are laser guns, dynamite, grenades, teleporters, blow torches, bombs and the option of an airstrike. If you are using a grenade for example, you would be given a small cursor which you use to aim where you want to throw the grenade, you can then set the effort level (space bar), which decides how far the grenade will be thrown and depending on which weapon you use, you can set the bounce rate, controlled with the "+" and "-" keys. You can also move your worms around, using the arrow keys to help you with your aiming or to simply get out the way of a bomb you might happen to set off. Controlling all of this equipment may sound a nightmare, but it isn`t. It may take you between 20 minutes and an hour to fully get used to the controls but it isn`t worth worrying about. The only other problem is getting used to aiming and learning the tricks of hitting your opponent every time, this is quite difficult to master, but not difficult to learn. There are many special additions to Worms and these will keep most people amused for a little while, these are: The ability to load in your own pictures as backgrounds The 4 player option The many speech samples The ability to name worms whatever you like There are many more options but what I want to tell you about is the speech samples, they are superb! For example, when you first fight a worm, the worm shouts "First Blood" in a cute squeaky voice! A nice little addition is when you leave the mouse for a few seconds a little worm shouts "Boring!" Another good speech sample is when you throw a grenade or bomb at a worm and miss completely, the worm shouts "Stupid!" Believe me, I have heard this sample many a time! O.K, so you`ve heard the good points about the game, so what are the bad points? Well the only bad point I can think of is the fact that there are no bad points! Which is a shame, because I love slagging off games, only if they`re crap though and Worms is definitely NOT CRAP. It`s brilliant! Now that I know worms have a deadly arson of weapons hidden underground, all I can say is, I won`t be treading on any worms for a while. The scores: Graphics- 89% Nice! Sound- 93% Speech samples are very clear and funny! Addictiveness- 93% Lastability- 93% Hassle factor- No problem with disk swapping Overall- 93% >5 END >2
