INTRODUCTION The Internet Adapter (TIA) is a new Internet access utility that converts a shell account into a "pseudo-SLIP" account with which you can you use graphical TCP/IP-based software such as Mosaic and Eudora. This document will step you through the installation of TIA into your shell account. It also provides pointers to detailed information on obtaining and installing a TCP/IP stack* (like Trumpet Winsock, MacTCP, etc.) and popular TCP/IP applications (clients). * A TCP/IP stack is a communications program that allows your personal computer to establish a SLIP connection with your host computer. Once a SLIP connection is established through TCP/IP, clients, like Netscape, etc., can then run *on top* of this program (hence the frequent use of the term "stack" to describe the programs using to communicate with the Internet). Taken together, these installation steps include: (1) Determine which binary of TIA you need (2) Download the correct version of TIA from Marketplace.com (3) Obtain TCP/IP and client application software for your PC or Mac (4) Order your 14-day TIA Evaluation code or Registered code (if you have not already done so (5) Install the TIA license code file (copy to your root directory) (6) Ensure that TIA is running properly in your shell account (7) Setup your PC or Mac TCP/IP program to use TIA (8) Setup your client applications to use TIA Additional introductory notes: (1) Cyberspace and InterMind are making available installation software that will simplify steps 3, 7 and 8 above. All documents are also available by gopher or World Wide Web at: marketplace.com STEP 1: DETERMINE WHICH BINARY VERSION OF TIA YOU NEED TO RUN The Internet Adapter (TIA) is a commercial Internet access utility that runs on the UNIX computer that hosts your Internet login or "shell" account. TIA does _not_ run on your Macintosh or PC. (To travel the Internet graphically, you need to setup your Macintosh, PC, or other "client" computer with the software required to use a standard SLIP Internet account--see instructions in Steps 3, 7 and 8 of this document.) Since TIA is a binary executable program (i.e., not a script) you must run the version that corresponds to the hardware and operating system of your UNIX host computer. TIA Version 1.03 is currently available for: Hardware Operating System ------------------------------- Sun Sparc Solaris 2.x Sun Sparc SunOS 4.1.x 386/486 BSDI 1.x 386/486 SCO 386/486 LINUX DEC Alpha OSF/1 2.0 DEC ULTRIX 4.3 IBM RS/6000 AIX 3.2 SGI IRIX 4.0 HP 9000 HPUX 9.0 All the TIA binary versions are available via anonymous FTP from marketplace.com. You need to determine which binary is the correct one for the computer that hosts your shell account. If you don't know that already, download the Free Software Foundation's (the GNU folks) "config.guess" script from marketplace.com via anonymous FTP and run that on the machine that hosts your shell account. It should tell you what you need to know. USING FTP: If you are not familiar with FTP, here are some basics. First, be reminded that our focus is currently on the UNIX machine that you dial to login to your shell account. You will be using the FTP program that is (undoubtedly) available on that computer to get the config.guess program from the computer named "marketplace.com". To do this, you need to login to your shell account and then move to a command-line prompt. ----------------------Mini Login Primer------------------------------- If you are familiar with the process of logging into your account and getting to a command line, you can skip this and the following two paragraphs. Login procedures for shell accounts vary slightly from one system to another, but it's usually easy to find your way. You will, of course, need a modem as well as a terminal communications program (like the "Terminal" program built into Windows or the Microphone or Quiklink II programs on the Mac). Most modems come with at least some terminal communications software. Using this package, dial the phone number provided for your shell account. If you are not familiar with terminal communications programs, you normally need to select communications settings before dialing another computer. Typical communications settings are "8 data bits" and "1 Stop Bit". For the "Parity" setting, select "None". For the "Connector" or "Port" setting, select the Com port on your computer to which your modem is connected. For "Phone Number" you must enter the phone number of the host computer. Then choose the "Dial" command and wait for your computer to call your shell account. Once your computer has dialed and connected to the machine that hosts your shell account, hit the key once or twice to signal that you are ready to enter information. The system may ask you to confirm your terminal type -- the prompt will read something like "Term = (VT100)". If so, simply enter . You must now enter your login name and password. Your screen will reward you with a login "banner" if you login successfully. At this point, you will either be at a command prompt (usually denoted by a "$" sign or ">" sign), or a menu. If you see a menu, select the option that moves you to a command prompt. If you encounter difficulty logging onto your shell account, see your provider for detailed login instructions. -----------------------End of Login Primer---------------------------- At this point you can run the host computer's FTP program by entering commands from your keyboard at the UNIX command prompt. What you need to type is offered below. Each line is a separate step. Lines in brackets [] must be replaced with your input, and all items contained in parentheses are remarks: ftp marketplace.com [type 'anonymous' when prompted for your login name] [type your complete email address when prompted for your password] cd tia (changes current directory to the 'tia' directory) ascii (makes sure your ftp is in ASCII transfer mode) get config.guess (transfers the file to your host computer) bye (be sure to enter this to quit your ftp program) chmod u+x config.guess (this gives your program execution privilege) ./config.guess (runs the config.guess program) The screen readout will tell you the type of machine and operating system you are on. ***NOTE: You may also see if the 'uname' command is supported on your host and gives you the information you need. At the command prompt, type: 'uname -a' and see what info it provides you. It may or may not tell you enough. If you cannot find this information you may also use the "brute force" approach: download all the different binary versions of TIA from marketplace.com and try them until you find one that runs correctly on your host computer! (Each binary is approximately 200K.) STEP 2: DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT VERSION OF TIA FROM MARKETPLACE.COM Once you know the correct binary you need, connect to marketplace.com via FTP and use the 'cd' command to move to the 'tia' directory. Each version of TIA has a descriptive name such as: sparc.sunos.tia, sparc.solaris.tia, 386.bsdi1.1.tia, etc. If there is a binary version of TIA for your host computer, download that version using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Example steps (again, enter commands at the UNIX command prompt): ftp marketplace.com [type 'anonymous' when prompted for your login name] [type your complete email address when prompted for your password] cd tia ls -a (lists the binary versions of TIA available) binary (makes sure your ftp program is in BINARY transfer mode) get (where is the file name of the binary for your host computer) (You may also want to check the READ.ME files in this directory for any late breaking news, installation notes, or pending ports.) ***NOTE: If there is *not* a version of TIA for your host, please request one by sending an e-mail message to tia-ports@marketplace.com. Include the details of your platform and the type of license you would like. We will be adding new ports for TIA based on customer demand and will notify you via e-mail when your requested port is ready. STEP 3: OBTAIN TCP/IP STACK AND APPLICATION SOFTWARE FOR YOUR PC OR MAC For more information on how to obtain the necessary TCP/IP software for your PC or Mac, please consult The TIA Companion for Windows or The TIA Companion for the MacIntosh. These documents will be e-mailed to your shell account if you send a blank e-mail message from your shell account to the appropriate address below: tia-win-setup@marketplace.com tia-mac-setup@marketplace.com An overview of Internet issues, including how to obtain a shell account (if you don't already have one) and selecting Mac or PC computing hardware, is available by sending e-mail to internet-basics@marketplace.com STEP 4: ORDER YOUR 14-DAY TIA EVALUATION CODE OR REGISTERED CODE If you have not already done so, order your 14-day TIA Evaluation License Code or Registered License Code. For an order form and ordering instructions, send blank e-mail from your shell account to tia-single@marketplace.com. Upon receipt of your order form, our "mailbots" will automatically process your request and e-mail two files to you: 1) The Installation Instructions for the Single User Version of the Internet Adapter (this document that you are now reading) and 2) your TIA license code. (Note that this assumes that your payment has been approved if you have ordered a Registered License Code.) At this point you can procede to Step 5 and activate TIA in your shell account. STEP 5: CONFIRM THAT THE TIA LICENSE CODE FILE IS PROPERLY INSTALLED Make sure you have the TIA License Code file properly installed in your home directory. These instructions assume you have already ordered and received your TIA Evaluation or Registered License Code via e-mail. The TIA License Code e-mail message containing the actual TIA License Code (e.g., TIACODE:6589384766aF30) should be saved in a file called '.tia'. Normally, the easy way to do this is with the "Export" command of the e-mail program in your shell account. Login to your shell account, start your host e-mail program and open the message containing the license code. -----------------------Mini Host Mail Primer-------------------------- If you have not used the mail program in your host account, try typing 'pine' at the command prompt -- many host systems use the excellent PINE mail program. If you receive a message like "command not found" or "invalid command", try typing 'elm' (for the ELM mail program) or just 'mail'. Once the mail program starts, refer to the on-line documentation if you need help. If none of these commands launches a mail program, contact your provider. --------------------------End of Primer------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Then use this command. It typically asks you to give the file a name (name it .tia). It also usually indicates that it will copy the message into your home directory, which is exactly what you want. (For example, the PINE mail reader functions in this fashion.) Other mail readers may require you to use the "Save" or "Save Message" command. If you are not permitted to specify the destination directory, the file may be saved to your /mail directory. The .tia file needs to be in your home directory, i.e., the directory you are automatically taken to when you login to your account. We recommend that you keep both the ".tia" file and the TIA program (the binary file for your host computer) in that directory, and that you start TIA from that directory. To confirm the .tia file is there, exit your mail program and type the following command in your home directory: ls -la If you don't see the file, see if it is located in your mail directory, and if so, copy it to your home directory. Here are some example steps. First, to identify the path of your home directory, logoff of your shell account (use the 'quit' or 'exit' command) and then login. Then at the prompt type: pwd (note the response: it is the path of your "present working directory") cd mail (moves you to the mail directory, assuming that is where your license code file ended up) ls -la (allows you to examine the mail directory for your file) mv [filename] [path to home directory]/.tia (moves the file to your home directory and names it ".tia". Use the "cp" command if mv isn't available for some reason) cd .. (backs you out of the mail directory, returning you to the home directory) ls -la (allows you to confirm presence of your .tia file) To view the contents of the .tia file type the following command: more .tia (or cat .tia) We recommend that you make 2 backup copies of your .tia file. Store one in another file (e.g., .tia.backup) and one as a text file on your Macintosh or PC. STEP 6. ENSURE TIA IS RUNNING PROPERLY Once the .tia file is in place and the appropriate TIA binary is copied to your account, type the name of the tia binary file to run it. For convenience you will want to rename this file to 'tia'. For example: mv 386.bsdi1.1.tia tia Then make sure TIA has execution permission: chmod u+x tia To run TIA, simply type the name of the program. For example: ./tia (the './' tells UNIX to look in this directory) For the remainder of these instructions we will refer to the TIA binary as just plain 'tia' or TIA. When TIA is working properly it prints a copyright notice and a brief message. For example: The Internet Adapter (tm) 1.0 for BSDI Unix Copyright (c) 1994 Cyberspace Development, Inc. Single License Ready to start your SLIP software. ***NOTE: You can ingore any warning messages concerning a library revision. For example: "ld.so: warning: /usr/lib/libc.so.1.8 has older revision than expected" If you see the "Ready to start your SLIP software" message above, TIA is installed properly and you are ready to proceed to the next step. If not, see the Troubleshooting section below. ***NOTE: To exit TIA type five Control-C's (type the Control Key and 'C' key simultaneously) in succession, allowing at least two seconds between the first and last one. (Users of Windows "Terminal": be sure your Windows key combinations are disabled or this won't work. In Terminal's Settings menu select Terminal Preferences. In the dialog box clear the checkbox labelled "Use Function, Arrow and Cntl Keys for Windows".) This will cause TIA to exit normally and return you to the UNIX prompt. This is a nice benefit as it means users can connect normally to their shell accounts, use their TCP/IP stack and TCP/IP applications through TIA, but easily quit TIA (without closing down TCP/IP applications) and then have access to their standard shell account to do things for which they don't have a TCP/IP application.) Here is a short troubleshooting guide to the error messages you may receive if TIA is _not_ running properly: * If you get the message "Permission Denied" type at the command line: chmod u+x tia This will give the tia program execution permission. Try it again. * If you are unable to set the execution permission it may be because you have downloaded a binary that is incompatible with your host computer (e.g., attempting to run a 386 binary on a SPARC machine). This could also mean that you have a "restricted" shell account which doesn't allow users to run their own programs. If this is the case you will need to speak to your friendly sysadmin about getting an "unrestricted" shell account (which is more typical). * If you get a message saying "command not found" it means your path probably doesn't include your home directory. You can either add your home directory to your PATH or always run TIA by typing: ./tia (tells UNIX to look for program in the current directory) * If you run TIA and get no response you probably don't have the correct binary version for your host computer. * If there is a problem with the evaluation time period, finding the .tia file, the contents of the .tia file, the login name, the domain name, etc. TIA will provide you with a short problem description. Follow the instructions in the problem message. ***NOTE: A TIA Single User Evaluation License is valid for 14 days from date of issue. To check this, TIA needs to be able to confirm the current date with an Internet time server. If the site where you are running TIA does not have access to an Internet time server, the Evaluation License will not work. * If you receive an error message concerning the login name or domain name when trying to run TIA please check to make sure the spelling of the items listed in your .tia file matches the correct spellings of those items for your host environment EXACTLY. Any discrepancies will result in an unusable License Code. Recall that you may list the contents of your .tia file by tying more .tia (or cat .tia) If you find a misspelling and this is an Evaluation License Code, simply reapply for a new Evaluation License Code using the correct spelling. If you find a misspelling and this is a Registered (i.e. paid) License Code, please e-mail a copy of the complete text of your .tia file together with an explanation of the misspelled items to: tia-order-desk@marketplace.com. ***NOTE: After your Single User Evaluation License expires, you can resubmit the same order form you used for it to purchase a Registered License. Just change the ORDER TYPE and supply the necessary credit card information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It is very important not to proceed to any of the following steps until TIA is working properly. It is much easier to debug one thing at a time! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STEP 7. SETUP YOUR PC OR MAC SLIP SOFTWARE TO USE TIA First, some general notes about using TIA on your shell account: * Login procedure: To use your account as a SLIP account (i.e., by running TIA) you must login to your account either manually or using a TCP/IP (SLIP) communications software package and a script written for the package. Either you or the script must complete the login procedure, move to a command prompt if necessary (some hosts present a menu and the user must specifically request an exit to a command prompt) and issue the "tia" command as the final command or script item. You then tell the TCP/IP stack software on your client computer (i.e., your PC or Mac) to "connect" or "start SLIP", etc.. * Using login scripts: The TIA Companion for the MacIntosh and The TIA Companion for Windows discuss creating and using scripts with popular TCP/IP (SLIP) communications packages. Procedures for obtaining these files are given below. * Built-in time-out feature: In order to make the best use of limited resources most Internet Access Providers include a "time out" on every shell account. The result is that if an account is idle (no typing or data transfer) for a certain amount of time that account is automatically logged out. This applies to TIA as well since it is running on your account. To reconnect after a time out just login again manually or re-run your SLIP connect script. You may need to restart some or all of the TCP/IP applications that were up at the time of the time-out. * Normal use of your shell account: To use your account as a standard shell account, just login using any serial communications software (as you always have, if you are an experienced shell account user). TCP/IP COMMUNICATIONS AND APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE: Now that you have installed TIA on the computer that hosts your shell account, your next step is adding TCP/IP communications and client applications software to your own computer. Mac and PC users should refer to The TIA Companion for the MacIntosh and The TIA Companion for Windows. Obtain these files, respectively, by sending blank e-mail to: tia-mac-setup@marketplace.com and tia-win-setup@marketplace.com Versions of the software you will need are available as freeware, shareware, and commercial software. Examples include: Trumpet Winsock for PC/Windows, Intercon InterSLIP for Macintosh, Synergy's VersaTerm SLIP for Macintosh, NetManage's Chameleon suite for PC, Spry's AIR series, etc. Many of these programs are available on marketplace.com in the /tia/shareware directory. Refer to the Companion appropriate to your personal computer if you are not sure how to use the xmodem program to move this software down to your own machine. MORE TCP/IP INFORMATION: Once you have your TCP/IP communications software installed (e.g., Trumpet or InterSLIP), you must configure its settings to interact successfully with TIA on your shell account. The procedure required to set up a TCP/IP stack to communicate with a shell account running TIA is the same as configuring a TCP/IP stack to run with a standard a SLIP/PPP account. Full details are provided in the TIA Companion documents. Additional tips, scripts and troubleshooting ideas are offered in the The TCP/IP Help File. Obtain this file by sending blank e-mail to: tia-tcpip-info@marketplace.com Details are also available in the TIA Gopher Brochure and TIA World Wide Web Brochure on MarketPlace.com. (Gopher to marketplace.com or point your lynx program at http://marketplace.com) A synopsis of key configuration issues is offered here: * IP Address: With TIA you do not have, or need, your own IP address. Since most SLIP and TCP/IP software requires you to enter one, use the dummy IP address of 192.0.2.1 (this is reserved for test networks and never assigned). The "NetMask" should be 255.255.255.0 (also known as a "Class C" address). * Gateway Address: The "Gateway" parameter of your SLIP software should be set to the name and/or IP address of the computer hosting your login account. ***NOTE: TIA itself may be able to help you with this and the following setup questions. (This may not work on all platforms or configurations.) If TIA is running, terminate it (by typing five Control-C key combinations, as above). Then type: tia -address and TIA will print out information on the IP addresses and domain names of both the Gateway and Nameservers for this host. * Nameserver Name/Address: You will also need a "Nameserver" name and/or IP address. This may be the same as the "Gateway" IP address or it may be a separate domain name and IP address. Use TIA's built-in tia -address function, check with your Internet Access Provider, or ask the System Administrator at your site. * Compressed SLIP/CSLIP: IMPORTANT: Make sure the "Compressed SLIP" or "CSLIP" flag is turned OFF in your TCP/IP software. * MTU Size: IMPORTANT: The parameter called "MTU Size" or "IP MTU Size" should be set to a value equal to or greater than 1,000. We recommend using the largest setting which should be 1,500. * ABOUT SHELL ACCOUNTS THAT INCLUDE A MENU: To amplify the point made above, TIA must be run directly from the UNIX prompt. If your Internet access provider offers a menu that comes up automatically when you login, you can either ask your provider to switch you to a standard shell account or add commands to your SLIP login script that take you to the menu choice for "shell" or "system prompt". STEP 8: SETUP YOUR TCP/IP APPLICATIONS (CLIENT) SOFTWARE TO WORK WITH TIA Setting up TCP/IP applications on your Mac or PC requires the same steps you would use if you had a standard SLIP account. You do not have to do anything differently because you are using a shell account with TIA. For experienced users, here are a few notes to help you get started. For detailed instructions, see the TIA Companion document for your client system (PC running Windows or MacIntosh) and The TCP/IP Help File. * WORLD WIDE WEB CLIENTS (e.g., Cello, Mosaic, etc.) - These should not require any special setup * EMAIL (e.g., Eudora) - The "SMTP Server" field should (in most cases) be set to the domain name of the computer hosting your account. The "POP Account" field should be the same as your full email address. NOTE: Your provider may or may not provide POP ("Post Office Protocol") e-mail services - if you have problems with this, check with your provider. * NET NEWS - you will need to enter a news server domain.name (e.g. news-1.provider.com). NOTE: Your provider may or may not provide you with access to a newsserver * GOPHER - Gopher clients should not require any special setup. * FTP - FTP programs should not require any special setup. * TELNET - Telnet clients should not require any special setup. WHAT TIA DOES NOT SUPPORT * Routed Services: TIA does not enable you to provide any routing- specific services back to the Internet. For example: if your Mac or PC is connected to the Internet via TIA, you cannot operate a World Wide Web server on your PC and have folks connect to that server from the Internet. (To operate gopher and W3 servers you must have a standard SLIP connection at least.) * Ping: TIA does not support "Ping" and other TCP/IP clients that require the use of the ICMP protocol. (TIA does support 'finger'.) * PPP: TIA 1.0 does not support PPP today - but we plan to add PPP support in the not-too-distant future. For more detailed information on what TIA is, and what it is not, please request the TIA Single User FAQ as explained at the start of this document. WHAT ABOUT TIA TECHNICAL SUPPORT? Due to TIA's low price, high volume, and worldwide sales, Cyberspace Development regrets that it cannot include free technical support with TIA Single Licenses. (TIA Host Licenses do include free support, by the way.) However we will make any and all bug fixes available free to all TIA customers via FTP from Marketplace.com (using an e-mail broadcast to all TIA customers about each major update). If you purchased TIA, have read these instructions carefully, and cannot get TIA to run on your account, please first check the Single User FAQ file mentioned at the start of this document -- we often add answers to new questions daily! If after checking the FAQ you believe you have a legitimate problem with TIA itself (NOT with the SLIP, TCP/IP, or TCP/IP applications on your PC or Mac, etc.) you may send a detailed description of your problem, a complete transcript of what TIA prints out when you attempt to run it, and the complete contents of your .tia file to: tia-support@marketplace.com (for Registered Licenses) or tia-eval-support@marketplace.com (for Evaluation Licenses) or tia-beta-support@marketplace.com (for any TIA Beta Software) Please note that preference will be given to technical support questions from our Registered Customers. IN NO EVENT WILL OUR LIABILITY OF ANY KIND INCLUDE ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, EVEN IF WE HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE POTENTIAL LOSS OR DAMAGE. 7. Our entire liability and your exclusive remedies for our liability of any kind (including liability for negligence except liability for personal injury caused solely by our negligence) for TIA covered by this Agreement and all other performance or nonperformance by us under or related to this Agreement are limited to the remedies specified by this Agreement. 8. Some states do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so the above exclusion may not apply to you.
