STARBIKE V10.00 By Tom Bird Completed on the 7/11/93 at 17.00 Welcome to StarBike, the super-improved lightbikes clone. This is a 2-player only game and player 2 uses the keys. The keys are fully redefinable so it shouldn't cause to much of a problem. The Game:- There are 3 main game types, each selectable from the Advanced Game Options menu in the level editor. They are as follows:- Duel: Traditional player 1 and player 2 try to kill each other by trapping the each other. The original game mode. Race: The first player to reach the defined zone wins the race. Alternatively the player who doesn't die first is the winner. Gaurdian: Player 1 must reach the zone, whilst player 2 must stop him/her. If player 2 enters the zone he dies and player 1 wins, but if player 2 completely blocks off access to the zone then player 1 has no choice but to attempt to kill player 2 or commit suicide. Turbos and Blocks:- Both of these options can be deactivated/reactivated from the main menu: Blocks: Solid blocks will appear on the board at random intervals, which will destroy a player if he/she hits them. This option is not advisable for race or gaurdian games since it can block of the zone from anybody getting to it. Turbos: By pressing fire or the turbo key the player will double in speed. There is a bar at the top of each players half which shows engine pressure, if this bar gets to the top then the player will explode and lose by default. This option is best used in race games. The Level Editor:- The main level map is an IFF screen, you must tell the computer the number of screen colours before you load this screen, the screen will then be automatically stretched to fit the arena. The best screen should be 380 high and 600 wide. On the screen colours 2 and 3 (remembering that the first colour is colour 0) will be physical obstacles which will kill a player if he/she runs into them. Needless to say the fewer screen colours you use for a level the faster the game will run. The obstacle colours can be modified with the Advanced Games Options. No. Of Screen Colours:- You must set this option to the correct number before loading a screen. Remember the fewer colours you use the better. Edit Starting Positions:- Use the numpad to scroll around the arena and then click on the part of the arena you want player 1 to start on with the mouse. Then repeat the process for player 2. Loading and Saving level files:- When you save a level as a file it will be saved as 2 seperate files. One file will have the name you specify on the file requester, the other will be that name with ".map" stuck on the end. The computer needs both these files to load the level. Advanced Game Options:- These options are accessed using a menu found in the level editor: Game Type: This option allows you to select what type of game you wish to play. Either Duel,Race or Gaurdian Define The Zone: When you play Race and Gaurdian games there needs to be a target zone for the players to head for/defend. You define this zone in much the same way as the starting positions. You scroll around the arena using the same controls and then using the mouse you click on the position of the top left corner of the zone, you will hear a bell, then you can click on the bottom right corner of the zone. This zone will now be used for Race and Gaurdian games. If you do not define a zone the Race and Gaurdian games will play identically to Duels. Define Teleporters: The Computer can handle up to 5 teleporters. First you must define the source of the teleporter, this will be the zone that a player must enter to teleport. Then, the same way as you specified starting positions you choose the teleporters destination. IE where the player will be teleported when he enters the teleport zone. To define the source you use the same technique you used to define the Zone and a third click will define the destination point. Teleporters can only be used once, since the second person will teleport directly into the first persons wall and will be instantly destroyed. Change Colour Colision:- This option allows you to change which colours will kill you when you hit them. Up to 7 can be defined by clicking on the box of the colour you wish to set, note that colour 0 can't be set as a colision colour. You must define at least one colour for colision but after that just click on a position outside the boxes to finish selecting. You must then choose which colours Player 1 and Player 2 will be, note that you are only able to choose colours which you have previously defined as colision colours. Boxes will always be drawn in colours 2 and 3. This game is shareware, so please send a £5 registration fee to: Tom Bird, Medford Cottage, High Street, Mickleton, GLOS.
