Welcome to 'The Mashie Niblick'. I'll try to make this Read.Me as short and painless as possible. Mashie will store your most recent 1000 shots and 100 rounds. Each time you use Mashie it will automatically update to your most recent 1000 shots and 100 rounds. Say the word database and I'll kill you. Mashie is 100 per cent 'Click-o-matic' for those who are keyboardophobic. Input and output uses graphics (not graphs) as you will see. The ball is quite often called BOB, for those of you who understand about such things. When you close this window (top left) you will go to a pull-down menu. All menus use mouse right button to select chosen item, and all Mashie input is done via the left mouse button. Menu items include :- Start-a-round Analysis Menu About Quit About just gives some program info. You ought not want to Quit at the start. Analysis Menu is used to view the 'current state of affairs'. This item is usually used when you have no data to input but nevertheless want to view your datafiles. Start-a-round is simply that. Start inputting your most recent round. Click in your course's par, your handicap, your GROSS score. Then click USE and off you go to the first hole. Only par 3's and 4's are used with Mashie so if you have to do a par 5 click the 4 instead. I'm not going into detail about why par 5's aren't allowed except to say it would take too long to get a decent sample size up, for most likely one shot type, the fairway wood. Instead, click the data for your APPROACH shot to the green, most likely your third stroke. The categories of approach shot analysed are LONG, MEDIUM, SHORT. You must select one of these boxes before clicking in the ball position. I take them to mean values for my irons e.g. LONG=2,3,4 MED=5,6,7 etc but you can take them to mean distance which approximates to the same thing or use different values for the irons, just so long as you are consistent. After selecting click in the final position of the ball. Bottom left and bottom right are 2 boxes each side for SAND and ROUGH, click inside the appropriate one if this is where you have landed. If your course has small greens you may wish to click on the green itself if your ball finished on the fringe. No account is recorded of any shots played after your approach shot until your first putt. This may sound piss poor, I disagree this program is not not about recording your each and every shot for posterity, or finding out how good a scrambler you are. It is about a performance/accuracy profile of your drives,long,medium,short irons and your putting. Speaking of which, on reaching the putting window you are faced with 5 possibilities namely:- click the 3 box for upto 3ft putt click the 6 box for a 3---6ft putt click the 12 box for a 6--12ft putt click the 20 box for a 12-20ft putt After selecting the distance you must click either SINK or MISS, repeating this procedure records all putts for the particular hole in question. Once you've sunk the putt you'll move on to the next hole, there are always 'flag' indicators in top left of window to tell you which hole you are on. Having got this far, I've just realised that I've not mentioned driving yet. Well I'm not going to retype this just to get it in order! Anyway, just click in one of the four marked grid positions corresponding to rough left, rough right, fairway left, fairway right. If your course has particularly narrow fairways you might consider including the 'semi' as fairway, but again please be consistent don't chop and change. After you have completed a round you will be asked if you want to save data to disk, just click OK and it will save it. By the way I lied above when I said Mashie was 100% click-o-matic. You can quit Mashie from the input section using the ESCape key, you only need to to this if you have made an utter hash of your input, which is impossible as it all so easy!! After your data has been saved to disk, Mashie moves directly to another menu. The titles are Project and Analysis. The enties under Project are:- Start-a-round Delete Diskdata About Quit Start-a-round is used when you want to input a round, same as before, it is included here because you might have wanted to look at your stored data first before starting your input. Be careful with Delete Diskdata this choice will do as it says namely delete ALL your data files. This choice is only really useful at the start of a new golf season. About and Quit are same as before. The entries under Analysis are:- Driving Long-irons Medium-irons Short-irons Putting Scores By selecting any of the above, Mashie will give you an immediate analysis for your chosen category. Any figures given are percentages. After you have finished looking at what you want click MENU box to return to the aforesaid. Finally, I hope you find Mashie useful, if you do, remember to send me some 'dosh' for my time and trouble. New versions of, and improvements to, Mashie, will depend on the response and suggestions I recieve from you, the users. All contributers will of course get any updated version free.
