This disk contains Studio Professional V2.14. Version numbers shown by the programs on this disk may differ and are only updated in case the program itself was changed. This file contain notes about changes made after printing the manual. We also feel that it is your right to have the information about changes made to previous versions: ------------------------------------------------------------------ Installation problems? Please note that the Commodore installer sometimes shows problems with various other sized system fonts. Temporarily switch back your system to the default Topaz 8 font for installation, in case the Installer doesn't show you all text in a proper format. We had some (6) cases of bad devices/filesystems causing the installer to crash during/after installation. Avoid these bad devices/filesystems as they are likely to cause other crashes on your system too. This warning is especialy for Emplant users. In most cases you are still able to install Studio after booting from an orig. Workbench disk. In this case, select "Expert" mode during installation. After installation, you are required to setup the Studio driver manualy by either using the Preset menu of the installed driver preferences program. ------------------------------------------------------------------ GENERAL Please note: the first task you should perfom after installing Studio is to adjust the gamma value of your monitor in the printing program. In the past, people complained about too dark output of Studio. Please note that the gamma value determined using the gamma window of Studio only describes the value for the screen mode used for displaying the gamma window (ie. your Workbench screen mode). This screen mode usualy has a different gamma value than the value used for displaying your image. We will address this problem in one of the next releases. in the meantime: if your output of Studio is too dark even if you are sure all CMS settings are correct for your setup, LOWER the gamma value in Studio's Monitor window until the output has the correct brightness. Once done, all your prints should be fine in brightness and color hue. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ImageFX AND PAGESTREAM 3.x NOTES ImageFX 2.x and PageStream 3.x users can install an application driver using the provided install software. Using these drivers, users are able to print directly from the application using the Studio printing program with all it's features, speed and quality. However, PageStream users have to take care about the various versions available. Because PageStream 3.x is still under development, the driver interface of PageStream might get changed from time to time. Everytime the PageStream driver interface get's changed, you have to update the Studio driver too or your system might crash. The current PageStream 3.1 (final) and 3.2 (final) driver will most likely last some time. So far planned, the driver should work with the next PageStream versions. However, if you do have problems, check out AmiNet and CompuServe for an updated Studio driver. Or give your distributor a call. ------------------------------------------------------------------ DESKJET NOTES Dear Deskjet 6xx/8xx (xx = 00, 60, 50, ...) user. WARNING: The current drivers are able to print 600*600dpi in greyscale mode. Please note that the printer is unable to print 600*600dpi in color mode. Don't try to print color in 600dpi mode (Density 2 or 6 with the 600x600 option set in DeskPref/DeskPref4c) or you might mess-up your printers output. The driver will automaticly print in SuperGrey mode when trying to print 600x600dpi. In order to print 600x600dpi, set the 600x600dpi gadget in DeskPref/DeskPref4C. This will double the print resolution from Density 1, 2 and 6. Use Density 2 or 6 for 600 dpi printing. Deskjet 8xx users should NEVER use density 5 (600*300) dpi for printing. This mode is not supported by the Deskjet 8xx family and can currently only be used with the Deskjet 6xx family. Deskjet 6xx and Deskjet 8xx should always enable the 600x600 gadget in the DeskPref 4C preference program. This will enlarge the printable area for graphics. Please note that the printers do have an unprintable margin of roughly 1.5 cm (1.2 cm plus 3 mm tolerance because of mechanical reason). It also avoids printing offsets between different graphic pages. DeskPref4C offers two presets in the menu for Deskjet 6xx and 8xx users. "Set I" adjusts the driver for 300dpi greyscale printing and 300 dpi color using an Ordered dither method. "Set II" adjust the driver for 600 dpi greyscale printing (Ordered dither) and 300 dpi color using the slower Blue Noise dither. Simply try out wich one fits your needs (and paper!) best. Or make your own settings starting with one of these two presets. Deskjet 690 and 870 users should note, that Studio does run with these printers. However, we will release new software for these printers supporting their new functions as soon as possible. Since Studio V2.17 Deskjet output modules for older Deskjet models are shipped. These output modules for the Studio printing program work with all Deskjet 300, 500, 510, 520, 540, 550, 560 (= 3xx and 5xx). But they are also of great use on the latest Deskjet compatible printers as many manufacturers still make compatible printers that use the older PCL language version while HP Deskjet 6xx and 8xx printers do use a different version. As usual, in case you do have a Deskjet compatible printer you can't get to work with any of Deskjet modules, try to get the Workbench driver working with your printer. Than use the Workbench output module of Studio for printing on your printer. However, so far I can't think of any Deskjet compatible printer not working with at least one of the Studio Deskjet output modules. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Canon BJC and BJ Please note that Canon has just released new printers. Most of these new printers mainly provide a new "Photo Releastic" print mode. Studio does support these new printers - including the Photo Ink Cartridge. Unless otherwise noted, you should use the compatible software for older printers with these new printers: Canon BJC 150 and BJC 240 users should use the BJC 210 software. Canon BJC 4200 and 4550 users should use the BJC 4100 software. Canon BJC 620 users should use the BJC 610 users. In order to print with the CanonBJ-EC Workbench driver using the Photo Ink Cartridge, set the "Mode" gadget in CanonBJECPref to "PhotoGraph Mode". Don't print using this mode using a normal ink cartridge. Always use the photo ink cartridge (BC22) with this mode. And don't forget you have to adjust the color adjustment for this different cartridge. As usual, there are presets available in the Preset menu of CanonBJECPref. In order to print using the Photo Ink cartridge and the Studio printing program, you must have the necessary output module installed for your printer. If your printer does support the feature, a "PhotoGraph Mode" Density 1 will become available in Studio for printing. Note that the printer always prints in 360dpi when using the Photo Ink Cartridge. The "Print Mode" setting configured for the output module will not be used, as the Photo Ink cartridge assumes HR 101 paper. So, you can setup the output module for your normal paper and print using any density except 1 with the normal print mode and cartridge. You can switch to Photo Ink by simply exchanging the cartridge in the printer and selecting density 1 ("PhotoGraph Mode") in Studio. Different to the manual (V2.09 an ealier), Custom ResX and ResY defines the page size for the CanonBJ5-230 and CanonBJ-EC in 1/360inch. The page size does include the unprintable margins. The driver will automaticly subtract the margins for you. The margins depend on the printer and emulation (Extended Emulation offers a larger printable page size). Canon BJC 70 and BJ 30 users: Studio now offers several profiles for the Canon BJC 70 and BJ 30 printer. Users may also use the BJC 4000 profiles with minor differences. Canon BJC 610 and 620 users: Canon BJC 620 users should use the 100% compatible BJC 610 software that came with your Studio V2.11/2.12/2.13 disks. There is no difference regarding the supported commands of the printer. The main difference between the BJC 620 and BJC 610 is the print speed. Studio V2.10 and older users need the Studio V2.11, V2.12 or V2.13 update disk "Part II" in order to get the BJC 610 software, wich is shipped with Studio since V2.11. If you experience strong stripes/banding of 1mm height in your BJC 610/620 output: make sure you run the print head alignment test as described in the BJC manual. Also make sure the print head is ok. Perform a printer nozzles test as described in the manual and clean the print head several times. In some cases it can help to print 20-30 fully colored pages if the print head was new. The stripes are not caused by the printer driver. However, your print mode, dither method and paper used are important. Don't try to print high resolution on bad paper. You rather get worse results compared to 360 dpi dumps. If you do experience 1mm height stripes, try switching the dither method. The BJC often prints less horizontal stripes when using an error diffusion (Floyd, Stucki,...) or Blue Noise dither method. Again, try the presets offered by CanonBJECPref for printing 720dpi first. Canon BJC 150, 210 and 240 users: These users should carefully note: These printers can't print color graphics and text on the same page. The printer can only print color in the Extended Emulation wich is set using CanonBJECPref's "Emul" gadget. Different to earlier versions of the CanonBJ-EC driver, the new V6 driver automaticly switches to Epson emulation at the start of a page for printing internal text. This means, you basicly can set the driver to Extended Emulation. You don't have to worry about the printer being unable to print text using the printer internal font under Extended Emulation. The driver automaticly switches emulation for you as required. But this only works at the top of a page. In order to print with CanonBJ-EC using the Photo Ink Cartridge, set the "Mode" gadget in CanonBJECPref to "PhotoGraph Mode". Don't print using this mode using a normal ink cartridge. Always use the photo ink cartridge (BC06) with this mode. And don't forget you have to adjust the color adjustment for this different cartridge. As usual, there are presets available in the Preset menu of CanonBJECPref. Canon BJC 4100, 4200 and 4550 (= 4xxx) users: Please note that printing 720*360 dpi using the CanonBJ-EC Workbench driver requires major color adjustments. Use the CanonBJECPref menu presets for adjusting the driver for 720dpi support. Note that the Canon BJC 4xxx will only print 720*360dpi graphics in BJC mode (extended emulation). For best image dumps on the Amiga use Studio's CMS for printing 720*360dpi. Presets are available for various papers using the CanonBJECPref program. BJC 4xxx users should use the BJC 4000 profiles with the printing program for printing 360dpi. In order to print with CanonBJ-EC using the Photo Ink Cartridge, set the "Mode" gadget in CanonBJECPref to "PhotoGraph Mode". Don't print using this mode using a normal ink cartridge. Always use the photo ink cartridge (BC22) with this mode. And don't forget you have to adjust the color adjustment for this different cartridge. As usual, there are presets available in the Preset menu of CanonBJECPref. ----- Now some info on changes made to the driver wich are not yet covered by the manual: 1. The new V6 CanonBJ-EC driver now overrides the dither setting defined by an application or the Workbench printer preferences program unless you select a density below 3. So basicly, you now don't have to care about the dither method set in printer preferences unless you use a density below 3. This also means things are more simple: The CanonBJ-EC V6 driver behaves like a stupid driver if you select a density below 3. In this case, none of the drivers advanced color correction or dithering is used during printing and the driver mainly offers the plain functions of most original Workbench drivers. But if you do select a density above 2, you can be pretty sure now that the driver's features are enabled and work correctly as the driver overrides all bad settings that might be caused by Workbench preferences or the application. This means, at density above 2, the driver always uses the dither routine and color adjustment defined in CanonBJECPref. It disables the printer device color correction. 2. The driver disables the color correction of the printer device. This color correction should never be used. Again, this is only true as long as you select a density above 2. 3. The driver is now able to automatcily switch between Epson and Extended emulation. So you can now set the Canon driver to Extended emulation using CanonBJECPref and you don't have to switch back to Epson emulation just to print some text using the printers internal font. However, there is still a limit by the printer: you can't print text using the printer font and graphics using extended emulation on exactly the same page. So, the printer driver can only switch emulation at the start of a page. However, please see the error chapter if you run into problems when using Extended emulation (mainly an "empty page" problem). 4. The CanonBJ-EC driver now uses the much advanced dither routines of Studio V2.13. As a result, the quality and the speed especialy of the more complex dither routines has been dramaticly improved. Also, the driver now offers more dither routines: Blue Noise 30% (Serp.) Blue Noise 50% (Serp.) Burkes Burkes (Serpentine) Floyd Steinberg (Serp.) Jarvis (Serpentine) Sierra2 Sierra2 (Serpentine) Sierra3 Sierra3 (Serpentine) Stucki (Serpentine) Here are some typical print times measured with Final Writer (a full DIN A4 page of text was printed with a small 2*2 cm colored logo): CanonBJ-EC V5.4 Canon BJ-EC V6.0 Speed Increase OrderedA256 140 sec 140 sec 0% Blue Noise 30% 400 sec 150 sec 267% As you can easily see, the new drivers complex dither routines are not much slower than the fast Order type dithering. Take care: the speed of the new driver mainly depends on the page contents printed and the dither routine used. You can easily see print speed increases by 300-400% if the page is not fully covered by all colors. Note: the dither routines are able to detect blank areas in the output even if this area is surounded by color. 5. Preferences DIN A4 setting is now causing the driver to use the printers maximum print area (ie. 2880 instead of 2804 dots at 360dpi). This is not the correct way, but most drivers (including most of the original Workbench drivers) do it this way and it seems to center the output better. If you must have the old setting back because your created documents print with an offset and updating the documents is too much trouble: define a custom DIN A4 page size (that is, set Custom ResX to 2804). 6. The driver now uses it's own simple UCR/GCR function (wich is 100% compatible to the printer device routine, but faster). As a result of this, users black adjustments for color printing might have to get readjusted when used with error diffussion or blue noise dithering. The SetupBJL Program -------------------- For some Canon users a SetupBJL program is installed (by the time of this writing: only for the Canon BJC 4xxx and BJC2xx). The program SetupBJL may also be named SetupBJL-BJC4xxx or similar identifying the printer to use with. The program can usualy be found in your systems Prefs drawer beside the drivers CanonPref program. The SetupBJL program may be used by Canon BJ and BJC users for controlling the printers permanent settings. It also allows you to perform certain printer functions like test dumps and ink head cleaning. The use of this program is very similar to the MS-DOS or Windows program described in your printers user manual or DOS print guide. This chapter will only cover the additional Amiga specific functions of the setup software. See you printer manuals for more details. In most cases the printer is shipped to you by the manufacturer already setup right for use with the Amiga. Anyway, if you start SetupBJL for the first time, it's recommended to run the Setup For Amiga/EU action first. This will setup the printer for you automaticly. Please note: the default setup often sets the printer page length to 22 inch in SetupBJL. This is NOT a bug and totaly correct as this reflects the printers internal setting after a complete reset. SetupBJL can be started with various Tool Types or Shell arguments: USEPOWERON: If you specify this keyword, the SetupBJL program will unghost the Auto On feature. Please note that this feature should only be used with the new BJC 240, 4200 and 4550 printers. When used with older printers like BJC 210 and BJC 4100, strange problems can arise (like being unable to turn off the printer manualy). However, if you like, you can try the feature with older printers... often it does work even on those older printers fine. However, people wrote me lot's of letters because of this feature in the past, even though the docs told about problems. So in order to make things safe, it's off by default for those old printers. PUBSCREEN: SetupBJL opens a window on the default public screen. You may specify a special public screen by setting the Tool Type "PUBSCREEN=screenname". The screen name is case sensitive. and the SetupBJL program will open its windows on your application's screen. TOPAZ: SetupBJL is font independent. All text is displayed using the system font. If TOPAZ is specified, only the topaz 8 font is used. SAVE: When using this option, SetupBJL will set-up the printer without showing the set-up window first. This is useful for controlling printer settings from batch files. You can enable certain printer settings without user interaction by using the FROM option in combination with SAVE. Settings can be saved from SetupBJL by using the Save As menu item. SetupBJL will automaticly quit after 10 seconds if your printer is off or not connected. FROM: SetupBJL saves the settings sent to the printer in a file named SetupBJL.prefs, placed in the same drawer as the SetupBJL program. Next time you start SetupBJL, the current printer settings are read from this file and displayed. FROM allows you to specify a different settings file for reading. You can save other settings files than SetupBJL.prefs using the Save As menu item. DEVICE: SetupBJL usually sets up the output device defined in Workbench 2.04 printer preferences. Since Workbench 2.04, nearly any output device can be defined in preferences for printer output. Usually serial.device or parallel.device is used. You may alter the device using the case sensitive DEVICE Tool Type or Shell argument. UNIT: Workbench 2.04 (or higher) Printer preferences programs may enable you to specify a printer port unit to print to. Most of the current multiport cards enable you to specify a port to print to using a unit number (0 = internal port, 1 = external port A, 2 = external port B ...). Using the UNIT tool type or Shell keyword you can define a unit (port) to print to. POWEROFF: When using this option, SetupBJL will turn off the printer without showing the set-up window first. This is useful for controlling the printer from batch files. SetupBJL will automaticly quit after 10 seconds if your printer is already off or not connected. SetupBJL saves the settings sent to the printer in a file named SetupBJL.prefs, placed in the same drawer as the SetupBJL program. Next time you start SetupBJL, the current printer settings are read from this file and displayed. This method works only so long as SetupBJL is used for all printer setting changes and is not moved to another directory without the SetupBJL.prefs file. SetupBJL offers some printer functions and settings not available in the MS DOS software: Setup For Amiga/EU This Printer Action function will setup the Canon printer for use with the Canon Amiga Workbench driver. The setup is for use with DIN A4 sized paper wich is mainly used in Europe (EU). Setup For Amiga/US Same as Setup For Amiga/EU for use with US Letter sized paper. Enable Hex Dump This Printer Action will set the printer to hex dump mode. Auto On When enabled, the printer will automaticly turn on if you try to transfer data to the printer. The option is usefull in combination with the Auto Off setting. It allows you to let the printer automaticly turn itself on and off as needed. Please note that turning on your computer can cause the printer to go on too. This is a normal behaviour with Auto On enabled. Turning your printer on and off too often is also no good idea. The printer does consume a small amount of ink for a cleaning procedure everytime it is turned on. It is recommended to use the Auto Off feature with at least 10 minutes. WARNING: there have been some reports of Canon BJC 4100 and BJC 210 printers refusing to turn off manualy after turning off the computer. If you do have such a problem with your printer, turn "Auto On" OFF. Similar reports do exist with printers set to an Auto Off value of 1 minute. If you do encounter strange problems, make sure Auto On is Off and a time is set above 1 minute for Auto Off. See the USEPOWERON option described above for more details. ------------------------------------------------------------------ LASER PRINTER Lexmark Optra 1200 users can now enable a 1200dpi PJ-Language setting. Additionaly setting the "Max Res" gadget to 1200 dpi will allow you to print 1200dpi on the Lexmark laser printers. Please note that PCL 5e does not define a 1200dpi resolution yet. However, the Lexmark's implementation most likely will be used by other 1200 dpi PCL printers in the future. So try it and if doesn't work, write a letter! ------------------------------------------------------------------ STYLUS COLOR NOTES Please note that Studio does output very good ESC/P2 code. If your Stylus Color printer shows stripes in the output, try cleaning your print head several times. It's definitly not a problem of Studio. We received several reports from users that turned out to be problems with bad ink heads and mechanical reasons. If your printer is supported, use the provided SetupStylus program in order to calibrate your printer. Also clean your ink head several times as described in the printer manual. And as a final note: please note that stripes in the output also depend on the printing speed and the dither method used. Some dither methods do show more banding than others. This is a general effect on all ink jet printers. As described later, improved Studio software for the Stylus Color family is currently under development (mainly specialised output modules and measured profiles offering superb color quality). We hope to release this update within the next months and it is most likely the first cause for an update notice sent to Studio users since the release of V2.00. ------------------------------------------------------------------ EpsonP2 DRIVER & STYLUS PRINTERS The EpsonP2 Workbench driver densities have changed in order to support the 360*720dpi resolution of the Epson Stylus Color IIS and Stylus 820. Warning: please note that most of the current Epson printers can't print using the 360*720 dpi density - even if they support 720*720 dpi. So don't select density 4 if you don't have a printer supporting that resolution. EpsonP2 now supports following densities: Density 1: 360*360 (no driver dithering/color adjustment) Density 2: 720*720 (no driver dithering/color adjustment) Density 3: 180*180 Density 4: 360*720 (Use with Stylus Color IIS/Stylus 820 only) Density 5: 360*180 Density 6: 360*360 Density 7: 720*720 EpsonP2Pref now offers presets for the Stylus Color IIS in order to help you setting up the driver for your wanted paper and resolution. Please note that the presets for greyscale printing are for use with the printers black print head. Don't print greyscales using the printers color head. Please note that the Epson Stylus Color IIS is unable to print true black in color images. The print head will generate black by mixturing all three colors (composite black) on the same spot. As a result, the output quality will be lowered and the ink consumption is pretty high. The Epson high resolution 720dpi paper is highly recommended for high quality dumps on the Stylus Color IIS. You are better off paying some extra cents for this paper instead of using cheap xerox paper. This avoids unnecessary test dumps consuming a great amount of the much more expensive printer ink. So don't safe money at the wrong item... This is just a big hint. The SetupStylus Program ----------------------- The Studio calibration utility is called SetupStylus and is usualy located in the drawer containing EpsonP2Pref. This is usualy your SYS:Prefs drawer. SetupStylus can also be used for setting up your printer. It allows control over settings usualy only enabled using the printers panel. So it's a much more easy to use method of getting your printer running. Following Epson printers are currently supported by the SetupStylus software: Stylus Color Stylus Color II Stylus Color IIs Stylus Pro Stylus Pro XL Stylus 820 ************************* WARNING *************************** The SetupStylus software was specificly designed for certain printers. NEVER SELECT A PRINTER OTHER THAN THE ONE YOU HAVE CONNECTED. YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR PRINTER WITH A FAULTY SELECTION. While this is an extremly unlike event, it can't be said too often. Don't even select a printer that is very similar to yours. For instance, it's not correct to select Epson Stylus Color II if an Epson Stylus Color 500 is connected. ****************************************************************** Starting SetupStylus -------------------- SetupStylus can be started with various Tool Types or Shell arguments: PUBSCREEN: SetupStylus opens a window on the default public screen. Below the printer gadget, you'll find the calibration actions offered by SetupStylus for your printer. Use them for calibrating your printer. The right side of the window allows setting up your printer. After doing all wanted adjustments, use the "Save to Printer" gadget in order to save the settings to the printer. To make the saved settings active, turn the printer off/on. SetupStylus saves the settings sent to the printer in a file named SetupStylus.prefs, placed in the same drawer as the SetupStylus program. Next time you start SetupStylus, the current printer settings are read from this file and displayed. This method works only so long as SetupStylus is used for all printer setting changes and is not moved to another directory without the SetupStylus.prefs file. In the next sections you'll find some usefull information about the various settings and actions offered by SetupStylus. Calibration with SetupStylus ---------------------------- Bidirectional Alignment: Selecting bi-directional mode in your printer driver causes your printer to print left-toright and right-to-left. Normally your Stylus printer prints from left to right only (unidirectionally). The bidirectional mode lets you print much faster, but usualy there is a quality loss mainly because of mechanical reasons. So bi-directional printing is a way to print fast with a minor quality loss. Although your printer is calibrated at the factory to compensate mechanical alterations, it may become uncalibrated during shipping. You should have to calibrate your printer only once. If you find it necessary to calibrate your printer again however, you can easily use this utility to recalibrate your printer. If you suspect that your printer needs calibration, the easiest way to check is by turning off bi-directional mode and printing your document again. If the output quality improves, you should recalibrate your printer. You should recalibrate your printer if: o Vertical lines in your output appear jagged o Letters appear to be skewed or split o Wavy gaps appear in halftoned images. Aligning Black and Color output: If you have a color printer (such as the Stylus COLOR), it may be necessary to align the Black print head with the Color print head. You should need to do this only once. If you think that your print heads have somehow become misaligned, you can easily realign them with the calibration utility. You should realign your print heads if: o Black output and color output that should line up doesn't. o Unwanted white spaces appear between black and color output. Note that after using the utility, the settings made will not be saved to the printer unless you turn off the printer using the Operate switch. If you turn off the printer by unplugging it or turning it off with a power bar, the settings will not be saved. After you have saved the settings turn off the printer as normal. Confirm the selection by pressing the "PAUSE" button once. The printer will than print it's settings. Note: the pitch setting shown by the printers self test may be faulty. For instance, the printer may show a pitch of 17.1cps instead of the correct 10cps. The setting shown by setup program is correct. ** Epson Stylus Pro / Pro XL ** Following settings can only be changed using the printers front panel: Loading Position, I/F Mode, I/F Wait Time You can run a printer self-test once you changed the settings. The printer will print all settings. In order to do so, turn the printer on while holding down the "Economy/Condensed" button. Than choose a language using the "FONT" button. Confirm the selection by pressing the "ALT" button once. The printer will than print it's settings. WRONG PRINTER SELECTED? ----------------------- In the unlikely event you ignored all warnings and used SetupStylus with the wrong printer selected: don't panic. So far, nothing will really damage your printer. Turn off the printer by unplugging the power cord instead of using the printers on/off switch. Than turn it on again and setup the printer using the correct printer selection in SetupStylus. In the unlikely event this doesn't help and your printer still doesn't behave right, use the printer panel to change the printer settings to the default values. If nothing helps, all the supported printers do have a specifc combination of panel buttons causing the printer to do a complete factory reset. This will erase the complete settings of the printer and will setup default values again. After this, your printer will work again. However, you have to run the calibration process again. The button combination that must be pressed during power on of the printer is either listed in your printer manual (search for it - it's usualy 3 buttons and well hidden in the manual) or can be asked at the Epson Hotline. ------------------------------------------------------------------ STUDIO'S STYLUS OUTPUT MODULES All Epson Stylus printers support the ESC/P2 printer language. But since the release of the Epson Stylus Color, Epson enhanced the language in order to support various new printer features and to increase the print speed. This update adds several new output modules specificly supporting the latest features of the Epson Stylus Color printers. For instance, the Stylus Color II output module does enable/disable the printers micro dot printing feature. The module automaticly disables unwanted printer panel selections. The module also makes use of compression schemes like Delta and TIFF in order to increase the output speed. Here a list of the new modules: Stylus Color: This module can be used with all current Stylus Color printers. By default, it is installed for the Stylus Color, Stylus Pro and Stylus Pro XL. The module does make use of the better compression schemes used by these printers. Following densities are available from the printing program: 1: 180*180 dpi with TIFF compression 2: 360*360 dpi with TIFF compression 3: 720*720 dpi with TIFF compression 4: 180*180 dpi with Delta compression 5: 360*360 dpi with Delta compression 6: 360*360 dpi with TIFF compression 7: 720*720 dpi with TIFF compression Stylus Color II: This module should only be used with the Stylus Color II or 500. Don't use it with any other type of printer. Beside offering the same densities and compression schemes as the Stylus Color module, this module does control the printer's micro dot feature and more. The module also changes the printers internal handling of data when printing greyscales images. As a result you can get faster and better greyscales dumps. Stylus Color IIS: This module should only be used with the Stylus Color IIS or 200. Don't use it with any other type of printer. The module does control the printers dot size and offers following densities: 1: 180*180 dpi with TIFF compression 2: 360*360 dpi with TIFF compression 3: 360*720 dpi with TIFF compression 4: 180*180 dpi with Delta compression 5: 360*360 dpi with Delta compression 6: 360*360 dpi with TIFF compression 7: 360*720 dpi with TIFF compression Stylus 820: The Stylus 820 is equal to the Stylus Color IIS module. It only supports greyscale printing. ------------------------------------------------------------------ STUDIO PRINTING PROGRAM After three years work Studio's V2.10 CMS printing system is finaly done. With release V2.10 we finaly have CMYK support built-in and various precise profiles. The system now basicly allows you to control any color aspect of your printer. We can now concentrate on the rather "simple" things. V2.11 adds an ink limit control function. ---- Studio V2.14 now supports the BMP (sometimes called Windows DIB) image format. Supported BMP formats are Windows BMP version 3 and OS 2 V1.x, V2.x and others: 1, 4, 8, 16 and 24 Bit. Uncompressed, RLE 4, RLE 8 and RLE 24 compression without delta is supported. Multiple image (or array) BMP's are supported and the first image from the array is used. As usual, BMP images are printed from disk without need for much memory. ---- Studio (V2.11) now offers you to limit the amount of ink/color printed using the former Separation window. The window can be selected with the "Color..." windows using the "Color: Separation, Weights, Usage" gadget. Note: you can only limit the amount of ink with disabled CMS. Otherwise it's the CMS profiles task to limit the amount of ink. When should you use this function? Usualy whenever your output without CMS becomes to muddy/dark because of too much ink being printed. For instance, let's assume you want to print without CMS on a Stylus Color or Canon BJC 610 printer at 720dpi. In this case, limit the amount of ink to 50% per print color. 50% is the smallest amount giving you full ink coverage on these printers. In most cases, you only have to use the gamma slider in the "Color..." window in order to get good results without CMS. As described in the Studio manual, there are special cases where printing without CMS might be wanted. Users wanting to create profiles should first find out the correct ink usage for the printers before printing the color calibration images. Enter the limits into CMSScan afterwoods. The ink limit for your printer can usualy easily be seen when printing the b/w greyscale calibration picture with 100% ink usage. ---- Studio (V2.08) now supports the PNG image format (PNG is pronounced "ping"). The PNG format is intended to provide a portable, legally unencumbered, well-compressed, well-specified standard for lossless bitmapped image files. We hope PNG will soon replace the well known GIF format. Beside offering more features than GIF, PNG also offers a very good lossless compression. We are sure PNG will soon become a well known standard beside JPEG/JFIF format used for lossy compression ---- Studio (V2.09) now supports the PCX image format. This format is very popular on MS DOS PC's. Studio supports 1,2,4,8 and 24 bit PCX files. Studio is also able to print the first image of DCX images. DCX images are mainly generated by fax software. ---- Studio (V2.10) now offers a saturation slider in the "Color..." window. An additional separation window allows you to control the separation used by Studio when printing color images without CMS. ---- The new separation functions offered are used for converting RGB screen colors to CMYK printer colors. Please note that the separation settings are used only if you print a color image without using the CMS. CMS profiles provide their own separation settings as the profiles are made for a specific separation process. Changing the separation process would result in faulty colors in the output. However, you can change the separation function used by the CMS by changing the profile settings using CMSEdit. Studio currently offers five different separation functions: Internal UCR/GCR: Uses the default internal separation. The method is simple: Studio will print a black dot if a cyan, magenta and yellow dot would otherwise be printed at the same place. Custom UCR/GCR: Uses the standard linear UCR and GCR percentage settings defined by the UCR and GCR integer gadgets. The meaning of this setting is very similar to that used by various DTP and image processing programs on the Amiga. Under color removal (UCR) describes the practice of removing quantities (here defined in percentages) of yellow, magenta and cyan from where the black is printing -- literally removing color from under the black. Greyscale component replacement (GCR) removes yellow, magenta and cyan ink from where all three inks print together, and replaces them with black. The black plate carries most of the tone in the reproduction, therefore neutrals (greys) are easier to print. Again, you define the percentage of how much color should be replaced. Custom UCR / Weak GCR: This setting uses the standard linear UCR setting as described above, but with a preset "weak" non linear grey component replacement function (Weak means less black is used). The non linear function results in composite grey being used for bright shades and black is only used for dark shades. This gives you fewer distrurbing black dots in lighter areas of your output. The output will look less grainy. Instead of offering a GCR setting, this method offers a setting for defining the maximum percentage of black being used by the replacement function. Usually a value between 80 and 100 percent gives good results. "Custom UCR / Medium GCR": This setting is similar to Custom UCR / Weak GCR. However, the GCR function will use black for brighter shades. "Custom UCR /Strong GCR": This setting is similar to Custom UCR / Medium GCR. However, the GCR function will use black for bright shades and the increase of black is nearly linear to the amount of composite grey of the processed color. So, when do you need the separation functions? Mainly when not using the CMS or when generating a profile using the tools (CMSScan) described later in an extra chapter. There is no general rule for which type of separation is best. The "Internal UCR/GCR" function is very fast and offers decent quality. The "Custom UCR/GCR" function is mainly offered for compatibility with other programs. The last three non-linear separation functions offer good quality. If your printer offers good ink coverage without bleeding and similar problems, Custom UCR / Weak GCR gives best results. For instance, if you own a normal inkjet printer, Custom UCR / Weak GCR often gives the best results when using coated paper. Plain paper often results in rather worse output as too much color ink is being printed. In those cases Custom UCR / Strong GCR might be better. Simply give it a try and see what you think is best for your printer, paper and dither method. Again note: when generating a CMS profile make sure you select the correct separation function for your set-up. Otherwise all printed calibration pages might be useless because they would have been made with a bad separation function. ---- Studio (V2.10) now includes several output modules for PCL compatible printers (mainly DeskJets and LaserJets). All output modules use Hewlett-Packard's "Printer Command Language" (PCL) in various forms. The installation program will install the proper output module for your printer. However, if you can't find an output module listed for your specific model of printer, choose an output module that matches your printer's emulation. We get many letters asking for output modules for specific printers, even if a generic module is available. In most cases these letters have been unnecessary. For instance, there is not one single drawback if you use a generic PCL 5C output module instead of a specific DeskJet 1200C module. (PS: You can use this module in b/w mode on Laserjet PCL 5 printers too!!!) The PCL 5C module was designed to work with several printers, including the PaintJet 300XL. The differences between the various DeskJet and PCL output modules are minor. Often the output module will offer you settings in the Config window which are already known by the preferences program for the Workbench driver. So if you don't find a specific setting described here, use the index of the Studio manual to learn about the meaning of the setting. First some general notes. Most modern DeskJet printers are able to print 600 dpi maximum in greyscale mode, while the color mode supports only 300 dpi maximum. If you own Studio V2.10 or higher, the program will automatically switch from color to greyscale printing if you choose a density of 600 dpi. When it comes to color printing, the DeskJet 8xx output module is a little different. Please note that a printer like the DeskJet 850C offers 300 dpi color printing similar to the cheaper DeskJet 660C printer. But the DeskJet 850C printer also offers 64 color shades per addressable printer dot, compared to the normal 8 colors. This results in a much better output quality when printing images. So once the DeskJet 8xx output module is selected, the "Density" gadget in Studio will also show you the printable color shades per addressable printer dot. ---- Following additions have been made to the ARexx interface of Studio V2.10 and V2.11: VERSION Returns the version of the Studio ARexx interface. Up to version 2.09 Studio returns 1 in PRTSTUDIO_RESULT. Version 2.10 returns 2. Version 2.11 and higher returns 3. INKLIMIT (GREY|CYAN|MAGENTA|YELLOW|BLACK|TOTAL) INKLIMIT (GREY|CYAN|MAGENTA|YELLOW|BLACK|TOTAL) Value Reads or writes the amount of ink limit used for a specific output color. Values of 0 to 100% are supports for all colors. TOTAL supports 0-400%. The commands require Studio V2.11 or higher. Use the Version command for detecting the Studio version. COLOR GREYSCALE Selects the default output print mode. The previous setting is returned in PRTSTUDIO_RESULT. No error is reported. Note that it is valid to select COLOR even if the image selected is a greyscale one or the printer driver selected doesn't support color. The setting mainly reflects the default preset. Studio will automatically switch to greyscale printing if required. The commands require Studio V2.10 or higher. Use the Version command for detecting the Studio version. SEPARATION SEPARATION 0-4 Sets the type of separation used when printing a color image without using the CMS. The previous setting is returned in PRTSTUDIO_RESULT. If there was an error, RC is set to 10 and PRTSTUDIO_RESULT to "Illegal value". The following values are supported: 0: Use the default internal separation. 1: Use the standard linear UCR and/or GCR settings defined by the UCR and GCR commands. 2: Use the standard linear UCR setting with a preset weak (Weak means less black is used for replacing composite grey.) non linear grey component replacement function. The GCR command can be used for defining the maximum percentage of black ink being used by the replacement function. 3: Use the standard linear UCR setting with a preset medium non linear grey component replacement function. The GCR command can be used for defining the maximum percentage of black ink being used by the replacement function. 4: Use the standard linear UCR setting with a preset strong non linear grey component replacement function. The GCR command can be used for defining the maximum percentage of black ink being used by the replacement function. The Separation command requires Studio V2.10 or higher. Use the Version command for detecting the Studio version. UCR UCR 0-9999 Sets or reads the amount of under color removal (UCR) in percent. The setting is used depending on the type of Separation selected. The previous setting is returned in PRTSTUDIO_RESULT. If there was an error, RC is set to 10 and PRTSTUDIO_RESULT to "Illegal value". The UCR command requires Studio V2.10 or higher. Use the Version command for detecting the Studio version. GCR GCR 0-9999 Sets or reads the type of grey component replacement (GCR) used by the separation function. The meaning of the GCR value mainly depends on the separation function being used. The value either defines the percentage for black generated from a color by the GCR function, or it defines the maximum amount of black ink to be used. The previous setting is returned in PRTSTUDIO_RESULT. If there was an error, RC is set to 10 and PRTSTUDIO_RESULT to "Illegal value". The GCR command requires Studio V2.10 or higher.
