LU21.arc contains an updated version of LU2.  No major changes
    were made; but the pitch-setting of instruments has been
    improved (fixed, I hope), and the timing is better.
    I have received zero response from the earlier <shareware>
    release of LU.  I guess no-one is using it... oh well. =-(

Usage:
    LU [score_name] [instruments directory]

Setting the instruments directory:

    LU uses many features of the ARP library; in particular, the ability
    to set and retrieve 'environment variables'.
    The environment-variable "INSTRUMENTS" (case-sensitive--'instruments'
    won't work) is the directory that will be searched for the instruments
    the score requires.

 Externally___
    You may set INSTRUMENTS prior to calling LU, i.e.
	set INSTRUMENTS=DF1:Instruments
    or you may set it from within LU.  Once INSTRUMENTS is set, either
    by the external command 'set', or internally, it will remain so
    until changed.
 Internally___
    If INSTRUMENTS isn't set when LU is invoked a file-requestor will
    open, with 'INSTRUMENTS' in the directory string-gadget.  You may
    clear the directory name with 'Amiga-X' (hold down the right-Amiga
    key while depressing the x key), or otherwise edit the name as you
    see fit.
	This requestor is only for setting the directory, not selecting
    instruments.  Clicking on an instrument name within the directory
    will have no effect.

    Once INSTRUMENTS is set, LU may be invoked with simply the score-name.
	i.e. 'LU <score-name>'.  You may specify <on the command-line>
    an instrument directory other than what INSTRUMENTS is set to if you
    choose...

    If you don't have instruments immediately available, or you just
    want to get an idea of what the score sounds like, set INSTRUMENTS
    to any directory (or disk).  LU will report that it can't find the
    instruments that the score calls for, and proceed to play the song
    with simple internal voices.

Invoking LU without a Score Name:
    By typing 'LU' by itself you enter an interactive mode, whereby
    you may play scores one after another without having to run LU
    again.
    The best part about this is that once an instrument has been loaded
    for a score it is subsequently available for other scores you select.
    Depending on memory, of course, there is an unlimited number of
    instruments that may be resident (in RAM).  If LU doesn't have to
    load instruments to play a score the delays between scores is kept
    very short.

    Note: a score may be aborted at any time with <control-C>.

LU and ARP:
    For those unfamiliar with ARP: briefly, it's the 'AmigaDOS Replacement
    Project',  the aim of which is to free the Amiga from the inadequacies
    of the current AmigaDOS, bring new functionality to the system, increase
    reliability, and make the programmer's task much easier (did I leave
    anything out?).
    You must have 'arp.library' in your LIBS: directory, or LU will not
    run.  More precisely, you'll need arp.library version 32 or later.

    <Without ARP, LU would be twice (at least) as large, slower to invoke,
    and not available yet.>

    LU will handle DMCS scores, InstantMusic scores, DMCS-SMUS scores,
    and to a limited degree Sonix scores.
    Only instruments of the 8SVX type are handled, so those great Sonix
    instruments are not available.  You can make copies of your 8SVX
    instruments, renaming them to what a score is seeking to get around
    this.
    In the future I may add support for Sonix instruments, and/or
    the ability to set alias's for instruments.

    There are nuances in a SMUS score that LU does not handle, and
    simply skips over.	While not ideal, the resulting sound is fairly
    good;  I hope you agree. =-)

    and use it you are requested to send a contribution.  The number of
    people that do this will determine whether there will be any more
    'non-commmercial' releases.
