The A1200 represents Commodore's first low-end, low-cost system to incorporate the Advanced Amiga Chip Set ("AA" chip set). Among the new features, the A1200 supports 8 bitplanes, allowing display of 256 simultaneous colors chosen from a palette of 16,777,216 colors. In size and design, the A1200 is similar to the A600 but is slightly larger. The larger design allows for use of a full-size keyboard, including numeric keypad.
