Vangelis career as a composer started
aged  four.   At  six and without any
formal  training,  he  gave the first
public   performance   of   his   own
compositions.   At  this early age he
began expanding the exsiting spectrum
of  sound and musical language and to
develog  the unique style for wich he
is  known today.  Vangelis moved from
Greece   to  Paris  during  the  late
1960's   in  order  to  continue  the
development  of  his  exploration  of
music  and sound through electronics.
Then  he  composed  and  recored  the
'Poeme  Symphonique',  'Fair  Que Ton
Reve Plus Longue Que La Nuit' and the
album  'Earth'.   He  also  formed  a
creative  relationship  with Frederic
Rossif, the French film director, for
whom   he   composed  several  scores
including  Contique  Des Creatures (a
trilogy dedicated to the works of the
painters Picasso, Georges Mathieu and
Georges   Braque)   together  with  a
series    of    a   wildlife   films:
'Apocalypse  Des  Animaux',  'La Fete
Sauvage',  'Opera Sauvage and Sauvage
Et Beau'.

In the mid 70's Vangelis relocated to
London   and   build  his  own  music
studio/laboratory whereby he was able
to  create  an  enviroment  where  he
could  compose,  perform  and develop
his work.  'Heaven And Hell', 'Albedo
0.39',  'Spiral', 'Beauborg', 'China'
and  'See  You  Later'  are resultant
examples   of   his  almost  complete
fusion  of  acouistic  and electronic
instrumentation  - a pioneering sound
that    has   since   gained   global
acceptance and acclaim.
Returning to Greece in 1978, Vangelis
collaborated  with  the Greek actress
Irene  Papas  on the album 'Odes' - a
classion  collection of Byzantine and
traditional   Greek  folk  songs,  an
interpretation  that  established new
direction  for  Greek  music.  A year
later  he  unexpectedly joined forces
with    Yes'   Jon   Anderson   -   a
collaboration   that   produced   the
albums  'Short Stories', 'The Friends
of  Mr.  Cairo', 'Private Collection'
and a string of hit singles.  In 1982
Vangelis  was  awared  with Oscar for
his soundtrack to 'Chariots Of Fire'.
The  international sucess of his work
has  perhaps overshadowed a number of
other  significiant achievements, not
least   of  his  majestic  score  was
'Antarctica'  (the  film  by japanese
director Koreyoshi Kurahara which has
the   distinction   of  becoming  the
biggest  grossing  film ever produced
in  Japan),  the futuristic music for
Ridley's Scott 'Bladerunner', and his
score for Costa Gavro's 'Missing'.

Vangelis  has  also  composed for the
theatre.   In 1983 he wrote the music
for  Michael  Kakayanis'  staging  on
Greek  tragedy 'Elektra', which again
featured    Irene   Papas   and   was
performed     at     the     open-air
amphitheatre  at Epidavros in Greece.
'Soil Festivities', an album inspired
by  the  cycle of nature was released
during  1984.  His filmwork continued
apace  with  the  soundtrack for 'The
Bounty'  starring  Anthony Hopkins an
Mel  Gibson.  In addition, he recored
a  symphonic work entitled 'Invisible
Connections',  and the following year
released  a  further symphonic/choral
album   -   'The   Mask'.   Vangelis'
endavours   in  the  classical  world
include  'R  B  Sque',  a 1983 ballet
score  correographed  by Royal Ballet
Principal,   Wayne  Eagling,  'Modern
Prometheus'  (1985)  \,  which he was
followed  by  a  commision to compose
the  score  for  the  'Beauty And The
Beast',  again  for  the Royal Ballet
Company.   In  the  summer  of  1987,
Vangelis   returned   to  Greece  and
staged  two  concerts  in  Athens, to
benefit  the  Acropolis  Preservation
Fund.  Towards the end of the year he
embarked   on   his   next  recording
project - a series of inter-connected
albums   which   will  cover  a  wide
musical   spectrum.    'Direct,  'the
first  release  of  the  series, will
unfold  into other releases which are
intented to explore different avenues
of sound and style and to encompass a
range  from modern symphonic works to
ethnic music.  Because of a desire to
shorten    the    distance    between
inspiration    and   realiastion   of
musical  compositon  and  thus ensure
maximum spontaneity Vangelis, through
the  years, has developed a technique
that  allown  him to compose, arrange
and   record   without   the  aid  of
computer     pre-programming.     The
'Direct'   series  will  reflect  the
application    of   this   technique.
Vangelis tends to avoid discussion as
to  the  mechanic of how his music is
created,  simply stating, "I function
as  a  channel  through  which  music
emerges from the chaos of noise."'
