The  killing  of É John  F.   Kennedy
Èhappened  at  12.31  (local time) on
the  22.   November 1963 in the city
of  Dallas,  Texas.   The president,
accompanied   with   his   wife  and
vice-president É Lyndon  B.  Johnson,
Èon an official visit, had arrived an
hour  before.   Although there was a
lot  of  unrest  in  the USA at that
time,  Kennedy  wanted  to  sit in a
open  car when they started off from
the  airport,  on their planned trip
trough  Dallas.   The  president and
his   wife  sat  together  with  the
governor  of Texas, Connally and his
wife.   Large  crowds  of people had
gathered   along   the   route   and
everything  went  normal, until they
passed   a   high  storage-building.
Suddenly   a  shot  was  heard,  and
Kennedy jerked and grabbed his neck.
Governor Connally, who turned to see
what  was  happening  was hit in the
chest  by  a  new  bullet.   Seconds
after   a   third  shot  was  fired,
hitting Kennedy in the backhead.

Everything  was  over in 5.6 seconds
and Kennedy was immediately taken to
Parkland   Memorial  Hospital.   The
doctors   quickly   ascertain   that
Connally  hadn't got a lethal wound,
but  the  condition of the president
was  very  critical.  Half past one,
an    hour   after   the   shooting,
president   Kennedy  was  officially
declared  dead.   And  an hour later
Lyndon  B.  Johnson became USA's 36.
president.

At   the   scene  of  the  crime,  a
photographer had discovered a rifle,
which  stuck  out of a window on the
6th  floor  in the storage-building,
which the cars passed.  The building
was  soon surrounded and examined by
the  police.   On  the 6th floor the
remains  of  a  lunch-pack, an empty
bottle  and  3  empty cartridges was
found.    On   the   5th   floor   a
semi-automatic rifle with binoculars
was      thrown      behind     some
cardboard-boxes.     One    of   the
employees   in   the   building  was
missing,   and   a  description  was
broadcasted.     The    first    who
discovered   a   person   with  this
description , was policeofficer J.D.
Tippit,  which  at  about 13.15 went
towards  the man.  He was met with 3
pistol-shots   and  died  instantly.
The  next  report  came  just before
13.45 from a ticket collector at one
of Dallas' cinemas, which had seen a
mysterious  person  going  into  the
cinema.   When  the  police arrived,
the  man  tried  defend himself, but
was  quickly  disarmed  and  carried
away.

The  arrested was ÉLee Harvey OswaldÈ,
a  24  year old ex-marinesoldier who
had   Marxist   sympathies.   Around
midnight,   Oswald   was  officially
charged  for the killing of Kennedy.
The   police   had  strong  evidence
against  him:  the murder-weapon had
Oswald's fingerprints, the rifle was
bought  by  Oswald  himself and they
had  proof  that  Oswald had been in
the  building  at  the  time  of the
killing.  Oswald denied everything.

On  the  morning  of  23.  November,
Oswald  was taken from custody to be
transferred    to   prison.    While
TV-cameras   transmitted  the  scene
live  to  millions of viewers, a man
cleared his way through the crowd of
reporters  and  shot  Oswald  before
anyone   reached   to  do  anything.
Oswald's   murderer  was  ÉJack RubyÈ
(Jack Rubenstein), a nightclubowner,
which   several   times   had   been
arrested  for  carrying  weapon.  He
was  immediately  taken  in custody,
but  a  motive, other than fury over
the  Kennedy-killing, was not found.
14.   March 1964, Ruby was sentenced
to  death for the killing of Oswald.
The verdict was appealed, but before
the  case  was  closed, Ruby died in
prison.
Because  of  the  many  (and  rather
fantastic)  theories and accusations
which were put out after the killing
of   Kennedy   and   his   murderer,
president    Johnson   appointed   a
investigation-commission   to  clear
all  the  circumstances  around  the
Kennedy-killing.    The  commission,
lead  by  supreme  court  judge Earl
Warren,   unanimous  concluded  that
Kennedy  was  killed  by Oswald, and
that  last-mentioned  planned it all
by himself.
