************************************************************ ABDUCTION: GAME INTRODUCTION COPYRIGHT (C) 1997 - PSYCHE ************************************************************ As a consequence of the continued use of Earth's natural resources, pumping pollutants into the atmosphere, the Earth was slowly being destroyed. At the turn of the 21st Century the situation had finally reached highly dangerous levels and something had to be done. The World leaders, and other representatives, gathered together at the World Environmental Crisis Convention of 2003, to discuss ways in which to prevent the inevitable self-destruction of Earth. On conclusion of the talks it was decided that political differences and personal gains would have to be put aside and a joint initiative would have to be implemented in order to restore Earth to a more stable state. A number of recommendations were formed from the talks which included: 1. The formation of a World Governing Body regarding environmental issues, to be known as EGB-5 [Environmental Governing Body]. This would consist of representatives from all countries who would each take a turn in heading the group. 2. The introduction of a mass plant scheme whereby vast quantities of greenery would be present in every city and town. Plantlife would line virtually every street and would help to purify the polluted air. 3. Research into other forms of power which could completely replace fossil fuels: coal, gas, oil; which were the cause of the current environmental problems. 4. Research into more efficient technology with regard to energy consumption. In order to carry out the research and development of new technology a huge space complex was built, funded and developed by all World countries which was launched into space, orbiting Earth. The complex contained numerous laboratories fitted out with the World's best technology and was staffed by experts in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry, engineering etc. A huge hotel facility was built within the complex. This served as a recreational centre for employees on the complex who were away from Earth for long periods of time, and also enabled the general public to experience life in space. The centre was a complete success turning out various pieces of equipment which were used to help stabilise Earth. New technology was also developed in other areas as the result of off-shoots of environmental experiments. However, there was a sinister side to these new events. There was an additional member of the World Alliance, undisclosed to the public, in the form of an alien species. The alien race had been monitoring Earth for a number of years and had predicted it's self-destruction. They decided to make contact with World leaders and were in fact responsible for bringing the World leaders together for the environmental crisis summit. The aliens explained what would happen if things were not changed. The alien representatives detailed how they came from a planet which used to have a similar eco-system to Earth and how their appearance was once a human-like form. However they too had experienced a decline in the ozone layer protecting them from harmful Ultra-violet rays and also suffered from heavy pollution levels. They explained how the changes in the environment had caused their DNA make-up to alter in order for them to adapt to the new climate they had created. Their skin had turned grey due to the poor quality of air now present in the atmosphere, which contained lower oxygen levels than before. Their eyes had become larger due to it being dark for long periods of the day, because of the thick smog in the atmosphere and skin had grown over their pupils acting as Ultra-violet filters which had become more prevalent because of vast holes in the ozone layer. Their physical appearance had also been affected by genetic tampering. There had been widespread use of genetic manipulation enabling changes to be made to their appearance and characteristics which were considered to be completely safe. It was not until generations later that horrific side effects were discovered in that mutated offspring were being produced. The practise had now been banned, but the current effects needed reversing. The aliens explained that they had decided to make contact with Earth partly because they wanted to stop us from making the same mistake and also because they wanted to gain our help. They would provide us with the technology and knowledge needed to stabilise Earth and in return they wanted to be able to take samples from Earth: plants, animals etc so they could research methods in which to turn back the clock and restore their own planet and occupants to their former state. One contraversial aspect to the aliens requests was that they wanted to be allowed to abduct humans to take samples of DNA, blood, hair, skin etc so they could find out how to restore their own DNA to normal. They also wanted to place humans under observation for short periods of time. EGB-5 was assured that no harm would come to the abductees and that they would be returned to Earth safely and unharmed. All memory of the abduction would be erased from their memory to avoid them suffering from any trauma. Once EGB-5 was happy that the abductees would suffer no ill effects they agreed to the proposal. As part of the agreement, EGB-5 was to be responsible for locating sites on Earth which would be the most appropriate and safest places for the aliens to take samples from. Various methods for marking locations were used which included erecting statues near selected areas or by marking fields which became know as "corn circles". The passing aliens would scan Earth for these signs and would know that they would find what they were looking for in the near vicinity. The marked sites also enabled EGB-5 to monitor the alien activity and also protect the aliens should they encounter any trouble or difficulties. As EGB-5 knew where the aliens would be present, it also made it easier to cover-up any reports of alien activity made by the public. The EGB-5/alien agreement worked well for a number of years but gradually it was noticed that there were occurrences of alien activity which had not been sanctioned by EGB-5. In particular there was an alarming rise in cases of human abductions, well above the numbers originally agreed upon. Things escalated out of control and it became apparent that the aliens were breaking their side of the agreement. It was discovered that the aliens had not been exactly truthful with their original story: They had no intention of trying to restore their own planet to its former state but intended to take over Earth for their own use. Within the complex, they were embarking upon a cloning/eugenics programme in order to produce a super intelligent clone which would have homicidal tendencies built into it's DNA. Once the process had been perfected the clone was to be put into mass production, aboard a secret processing plant aboard the complex, and gradually integrated into Earth societies. When enough of them had been put onto Earth their instructions to wipe out Earth's occupants would be activated. Once this task was completed, the clones were programmed to destroy themselves leaving Earth open for the aliens to occupy. EGB-5 knew something had to be done to prevent this from happening but wasn't sure what to do. They dared not expose the alien liaison to the public for fear of causing mass panic and hysteria. A state of confusion on Earth could only be beneficial to the aliens and help them with their plan. It was therefore decided that the only possible option was to somehow completely destroy the complex. However this would be a problem as EGB-5 did not have a complete blueprint of the complex and from the information they had it appeared the complex structure had no weaknesses. The aliens had been very selective in what information they gave out and now EGB-5 knew why! The alien area of the complex would therefore have to be infiltrated and a full blueprint of the complex located which would hopefully indicate a vulnerable area of the complex. This would not be an easy task as the aliens had ensured their area was well protected using technology far advanced to Earths. EGB-5 would need to find someone of incredibly high intelligence who could best match the aliens own superior knowledge and also someone who possessed the strong character required to survive the difficult task ahead. After much investigation and deliberation they chose Travis Connor: Head of Research and Development at Sin-Tech. He was arguably one of the most intelligent people on Earth and was a young, strong and streetwise character having come from a tough upbringing. It was decided that it was not a good idea to simply approach Connor and inform him of what was happening. There was the danger that he would expose the whole operation or that he could simply refuse to carry out the task. It was therefore decided to set him up as an alien abductee in the hope that when he discovered the presence of the aliens aboard the complex, he would do something about it. EGB-5 would closely monitor Connor as best as possible and provide help along the way but under no circumstances would Connor be allowed to know he was being helped or that EGB-5 was involved with aliens in any way. Connor would be on his own and any exposure he made about the aliens to the general public would have to be fiercely denied for fear of alerting the aliens that EGB-5 knew of their plans. If he persisted with any claims hopefully he would be dismissed as a lunatic. If he was /unlucky/ and people actually believed his claims then that would cause a problem ... ... and reluctantly he would have to be ELIMINATED.
