Title : Kantronics D4-10 CAUTION!!! From: VA3CW@VE3FJB.#CON.ON.CAN.NA I recently had the unfortunate experience of finding out that Kantronics has altered the IF design of their D4-10 UHF Wide-Band Transceiver. According to Kantronics the IF frequency has been changed. Documentation shipped with 4 of these units did not reflect this in either the schematic or Operator's Manual. The problem will manifest itself if you order crystals from someone other than Kantronics for a frequency other than that of which was shipped by Kantronics. The new IF cystal (X1 on the schematic) frequency is 34.285 MHz. The old frequency was 34.300 MHz. The only way to be sure of which version you have (with any certainty!) is to open the unit and locate the crystal near the large receiver IC U6. The resultant change causes the new crystal ordering formula to be: fo=(fc-44.985)/64 The old frequency and documentation indicate the formula to be: fo=(fc-45)/64 A quick check on a calculator will indicate that if you order crystals in accordance with the supplied documentation there is a good chance that your receiver will not tune up. This will be a result of the receive crystal carrier frequency being 15 kHz low! Check first before ordering! This "technical improvement" by Kantronics cost our packet group $80 + in new crystals! 73 Andy VA3CW HEX-9 Barrie ARC - Packet Committee ax.25: va3cw @ ve3fjb.#con.on.can.na e-mail: amitchell@gc1.georcoll.on.ca DOWNLOADED AND REALIGNED FROM THE PACKET NETWORK BY BOB G0LBQ - N6XDI
