I just purchased at AEA PK-88 TNC and discovered a few discrepencies in the manual. I'm sure a few other users of this fine product may have discovered the errors also. When I wired the TNC end 8 pin connector I followed the table in Appendix E. After completing the work I could not get the TNC to work properly in the loop back test. I checked the wiring but compared it with the chart in Section 2.2. I discovered the chart had pins 2 and 3 reversed to what was shown in the appendix. The chart is section 2.2 is correct. Do not use the chart in the appendix as a reference when wiring the TNC end of the cable. The next error apparently is a typo in the preface. Look at the page titled "Getting Started With the PK-88". It's the page before the one labled "i".At the bottom of that page, locate the paragraph titled "Note to PC-PAKRATT Users". The file name PCPAKRA87.CFG is not correct It should be PCPAKR87.CFG. Obviously you can't have 9 characters in a file name in DOS!! The final problem I ran into was design error in the receptacle layout on the back of the PK-88. The RX IN minijack is too close to the DB-25 RS-232 port. It's an extremely tight fit with the respective plugs connected to those ports to the point that the minijack might get damaged by the RS-232 cable connector putting lateral pressure on the miniplug. -=-=-=-=-=-=- A few local stations have installed MSYS 1.06 recently, and at 2 of them that are running PK-88's have noticed something peculiar. After an apparently random time running MSYS 1.06, the PK-88 seems to send out corrupted frames. The frames seem to be bit shifted or something like that, and of course the destination never hears it's callsign in the bad AX.25 packets. LAN users will find all sorts of crud calls in their MHeard/Jlists. This all seems to be cleared up if you power down the PK-88 and back up again. The PK-88 stays in KISS mode of course.. but then all outgoing packets are again intelligible by neighbours. The PK-88's involved have the "latest" firmware that AEA published, with the extended commands, and the sifed KISS command (one command instead of 6 or 8). Remove the 4 screws holding the circuit board to the chassis, and remove the small white connector going to the radio connector. The following wires are to be connected to the designated spots on the bottom of the circuit board. BROWN - (5 volts) - Connect to pin 2 of the 7910. RED - (Ground) - Connect to pin 22 of the 7910. ORANGE - (LED) - Not connected. YELLOW - (DCD) - Not connected. GREEN - (-DCD) - Connect to center pin of JP4-CD. BLUE - (Clock) - Connect to pin 13, U20 , 74LS373. VIOLET - (cd in) - Connect to pin 25 of the 7910. GRAY - (NRZI) - Connect to pin 26 of the 7910. Important: Pull the jumper off of JP4-CD. You may hang the jumper off one of the end pins of this jumper. To aid in installation, you should use a longer ribbon cable. I recommend using a 10 inch piece as this would allow you to place the state machine board on top, upside down, near the AEA EPROM firmware chip. The ribbon cable then can be placed between the TRANS and CONV led's. The PK-88 is now ready to go and will not require further adjustment. There it is. These are corrections and rewording to the TAPR instructions that came with the DCD state machine.
