I will be not be held liable for any damage caused, directly or indirectly, resulting by the use of this program. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MORSE CODE TRAINER -------------------- Some time back, I wrote a program for the Amiga, called "Communicate". This program set out to teach the alphabet of eight non verbal languages. One of the languages was Morse code. Since then some users of this program have written asking for punctuation and numbers to be included in future updates to the program. Well, instead of updating "Communicate" which would have meant having to update eight languages, I have decided to write a new program. One that teaches Morse code only. This program contains the complete alphabet, continental letters, numerals (normal and abbreviated), punctuation, procedure signals, informal amateur cw abbreviations, international Q-codes and RST codes. Morse Code Trainer also takes you through 18 exercises, each designed to help you memorise the Morse alphabet quickly. The following text describes how to use the program and not how to use Morse code. If you wish to learn more about this subject I can recommend two books which I found invaluable. These are: "The Morse Code for Radio Amateurs" by George Benbow and "Amateur Radio Operating Manual", by R.J. Eckersley. These two books can be obtained from:- Radio Society of Great Britain 35 Doughty Street, London WC1N 2AE ====================================================================== HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM ------------------------ Upon loading the program you will notice that the screen is divided into three windows. The green window is were the letters pressed are displayed. The cyan window is were the equivalent Morse code is displayed and in the blue window is were all other calls are displayed, more about this later. Make sure your sound is ON, and adjust your volume control. Freehand Mode ------------- This part of the program is known as the `freehand mode'. In this mode, you can press any key from the keyboard, and its equivalent Morse code is displayed together with other information. The program also play the di's and dah's of the key pressed. Each letter is grouped with other similar letters. This is indicated in the green window. For example, if you press the letter A, the program will indicate that this letter is grouped with the letters U and V. Press the letters U and V and see why. The Menu -------- Pressing the right mouse button reveals the menu. This section will take you through each menu command as they appear, from left to right. Project/Info ------------ Displays who wrote this program. Project/Quit ------------ Use this when you had enough. Other Calls/Continental letters ------------------------------- The program will display a list of continental type letters or as they are sometimes called, accented letters. These are only heard occasionally on amateur bands. To hear and see the Morse code for any of the listed letters, press the equivalent key. These F keys can be pressed at any time, even when the list is not displayed. Other Calls/Procedure Signals ----------------------------- This command gives a list of procedure signals. These signals are sent mostly at the end of each message. A bar over the letters indicates that these letters are sent as one character. To send one of these signals move the cursor, using the up, down, left and right arrow keys and when the cursor (the green square), is on the signal required, press the return key. You will notice that when you move the cursor, the program displays the meaning of the corresponding signal. Other Calls/CW Abbreviations ---------------------------- Select this command will display a list of informal amateur cw abbreviations. To send one of these abbreviations, move the cursor, using the up, down, left and right arrow keys and when the cursor (the green square), is on the cw required, press the return key. You will notice that when you move the cursor, the program displays the meaning of the corresponding code. Other Calls/International Q-Codes --------------------------------- This gives a list of internationally agreed codes. These codes are used for information and procedure signals. Each code can either be a statement or a question. When a Q-code is followed by a question mark, an answer is required otherwise it is considered to be a statement. To send one of these Q-codes, move the cursor, using the up, down, left and right arrow keys and when the cursor (the green square), is on the Q-code required, press the return key. You will notice that when you move the cursor, the program displays the meaning of the corresponding code. In this case both the questions and answers are displayed. Other Calls/RST Codes --------------------- The RST codes are used for signal reports. These letters stand for, R for readability, S for signal strength and the T for tone. To send one of these RST codes, move the cursor, using the up, down, left and right arrow keys and when the cursor (the white square), is on the RST code required, press the return key. You will notice that when you move the cursor, the program displays the meaning of the corresponding code. Please note that these codes are normally sent together. Example:- RST 579 denotes "Fully readable signals, moderately strong with pure dc note". Other Calls/Abbreviated numerals or Standard numerals -------------------------------- ----------------- Pressing this command allows you to send the numeral codes as abbreviated or as standard. Example:- a standard number 1 is sent as di-dah-dah-dah-dah while in abbreviated mode it sent as di-dah. Exercises --------- You can choose any of the 10 exercises on view. When you select an exercise, you are introduced to the letters you're about to learn. As you can see, these letters are grouped together. Another thing to notice is that if have chosen any exercise except 1 or 10, the program indicates that the exercise is `exercise a'. You can select `exercise b' at any time, from the menu. Exercises `a' will send a sequence of letters using only the letters within that particular exercise. You are then expected to enter the sequence back. If you answer up to eight of the ten questions correctly, you are informed that you can move on to exercise `b'. Exercises 'b'. In these exercises the program uses the letters from that exercise and from previous exercises. This time as well, the program will send an x amount of words using these letters. Unlike exercises `a' these words do mean something. As before, If you answer enough questions correctly, you are informed that you can move on to the next exercise. In exercise 10 the program sends a typical radio message using abbreviations, RST codes and Q-codes. You can go back to `freehand mode' at any time by pressing the `Esc' key or using the menu. Speed ----- The default speed allows each character to be sent at 12 words per minute. This speed can be changed from 6wpm to 32 wpm. The speed will stay at the selected wpm until it is changed again or the program is re-set. Options ------- Allowing you to select audio only, visual only or audio & visual (default). This setting stays the same until it is changed again or the program is re-set. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Many thanks to Don F.
