Compugraphic Fonts Collection ----------------------------- Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome to the Compugraphic Fonts Collection. This is a collection of a number of high quality Compugraphic fonts that can be used with Gold Disk`s ProPage v2.1 and higher, Pagesetter 3, and Soft-Logik`s Pagestream. As well as this they can also be used with Workbench 2.0/2.1/3.0 by running the Fountain program, however a few may refuse to convert. A list of fonts included on this disk is in a separate file. With these disks I hope to be able to establish a large collection of freely available disks which will be of great use to the Amiga Desk Top Publisher. Compatibility ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These fonts are compatible with Pro Page versions 2.1 and higher, and PageSetter 3. They are of no use in earlier versions of the programs as they need separate .atc files for each font. These have not been included. These fonts should be compatible with PageStream v2.1 onwards, but as I have never used this program I cannot be sure. These disks should be compatible with all machines and workbench revisions and there are no non-standard loaders or files that could cause problems. Contents ~~~~~~~~ This disk should contain the following:- 1) CGFonts directory containing the compugraphic font files. 2) Docs directory containing typeface documentation. 3) CG_Update directory containing CG_Update program and documentation. 4) This Read Me file. 5) List of fonts. 6) Pictorial list of fonts. 7) Index of complete collection. About the Fonts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All of these fonts have either been converted by myself from Adobe Type 1 format or taken from other PD collections. Originally, all of the fonts included were PD and Shareware fonts on the PC or Mac. Most, if not all would have been converted to Amiga Compugraphic format using Gold Disk`s Fontmanager program, or excellent Soft-Logik`s Typesmith. Unfortunately, there are many individuals distributing these converted fonts without the authors original documentation. In my view just because a file is in a different format does not stop it from being PD or Shareware. Leaving out these files is destroying the spirit of PD and Shareware everywhere, not just on the Amiga. These authors have spent a lot of time and effort creating these fonts and it is only fair they get their reward. I have done my best to include as many of the original readme files as I have access to, but unfortunately this amounts to what is probably less than 40% of the collection. This is because many of the fonts that are circulating around the PD libraries are without these files. If you have doc files to any fonts included (that on this disk without their docs) then I would be most grateful if you could send them to me, either written or on disk. If you want them returned please include an SAE. If I receive any I will try to include them in any further disks. I cannot take any responsibility for any damage occurring to yourself or your property due to use of this disk and associated files. To the best of my knowledge, all of the included files are either PD or Shareware and are suitable for distribution on this disk. If however you are either a copyright holder or an author and feel your copyright has been infringed then please contact me and I will do my best to rectify the situation. Distribution ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This disk has been submitted as Public Domain and must stay that way. However, there are a few restrictions to this. 1) If the font is shareware and you use it regularly then you must send the author his or her requested shareware fee. (Obviously this is only possible with the typefaces which have read me files attached). 2) The program CG_Update MUST NOT be freely distributed as PD or otherwise, in any other way other than on this disk. Please read the separate file. 3) You must not alter this disk in any way. My aim is to set up a large collection of these fonts and I would prefer that the disk format stays the same, any one other than me altering the disk and redistributing it would constitute the breaking Gold Disk`s copyright of the CG_Update program. PD libraries are allowed to put on there logos etc. Everything on this disk is either PD or Shareware except for the program CG_Update, to which Gold Disk Inc. hold the copyright. COPYRIGHT NOTICE: The CG_Update program is copyrighted by Gold Disk Incorporated and is distributed, free of charge, by Clive Gardner on the CG Collection Disks with permission from Gold Disk Incorporated. Under no circumstances may the CG_Update program be redistributed by any company, individual or otherwise without written permission of Gold Disk Incorporated. Gold Disk Incoporated can, under no circumstances be held liable for the preformance of the CG_Update program. Using the Fonts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Using the fonts is quite simple, however before they can be used they must be copied to a different directory. I hope you have a copy of a file manager such as the excellent SID, Directory Opus, or CLI-Mate, as without one copying all these files will be a nightmare! 1) Select the font you want to use. 2) From the CGFonts directory on this disk copy the relevant files which end with .lib .dat and .metric to the CGFonts directory on your disk(s). For example, if you chose a typeface named Times, you would copy the files Times.dat, Times.lib and Times.metric to you CGFonts directory. 3) Repeat for any other fonts. 4) Run the included CG_Update program. If you are using Pagestream this is not nessacery. (see separate file for more info) And that`s really all you have to do. Now just load up your DTP program and they should be available ready for use. Sorry that there is no installation script or utilitiy. At the moment I am experimenting with various systems and so there should be one on all disks in the near future. I would like to use Commodore`s standard installer but I am still waiting for that elusive reply from them.... N.B. These fonts are useable with PageStream. However, the installation procedure is different. For instructions for this please refer to your instruction manual. Postscript Users ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have decided that due to limited space on each disk that I will not supply the downloadable font files. If you need them then you should use the CreateFont utility that was supplied with ProPage 2.1 and higher, and PageSetter 3. If I receive enough letters asking for them I may release separate disks with just these downloadable fonts on. CG_Update ~~~~~~~~~ All the documentation for conditions of use and operation of the CG_Update programs can be found in the file ReadMeFirst! which can be found in the CG_Update directory. Font Documentation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nearly all of the fonts included on these disks were originaly in Adobe Type 1 format, which were then converted to compugraphic format. While reading each fonts documentation you will notice that the author says that there are files included which you cannot find on this disk. These have not been included as they are specific to the Adobe format and the machine they were originaly on. These file are of no use to you and so are not included. The nessacery parts of these files have been converted and saved as the .dat, .lib and .metric files you will find in the CGFonts directory. The picture previews that the author may say are supplied have all been transfered into one file (see below). Piclist ~~~~~~~ The Piclist file is simply a list of the fonts on this disk saved as a viewable IFF. To save having to use a separated picture viewer I used Amiganuts excellent MOD Processor. Unfortunately this means that you will not be able to alter it or view it through a program such a DPaint. To quit from the display just press the left mouse button. This file only gives a rough representation of how the fonts look. I had to use a screen grabber to save off the display from ProPage. The fonts look rough on screen but print out much, much better. Index ~~~~~ I have included an index list of all fonts up to and including the disk you have now. This will be updated with every release. The contents file details which disk you have and the fonts on it. Requests ~~~~~~~~ I would like to know whether anyone knows anything about the following three typefaces:- MBembo MGillSans MRockwell I recently was told that these typefaces are not freely distributable. I am not sure of this and would like to know for certain, As these are of very high quality and are very useful. I you know anything please get in touch. With the release of the Soft-Logik`s TypeSmith program it seems that at last there is a chance that the can Amiga establish itself as an excellent DTP machine. If you create any fonts using such a program, or have any unusual typefaces in either Compugraphic or Adobe Type 1 format please make them available to other users. Submit them to a PD library yourself or send them to me and I will be more than happy to include them on these disks! Please pay Shareware fees where possible, and just remember the cheapest selection of commercial fonts costs around £35 and contains only a small number. A shareware registration fee is a small price to pay. By the time you are reading this there should be a few more disks from this collection available so if you liked this one get the rest.
