ÉÌ           Jury Vs Voting

ÈOver  the  last couple of years, the
results   of   the  competitions  at
partiesÉ (except in Sweden)È have been
decided  by  a  jury , but lately it
seems  that  it has turned out to be
more  popular with voting.  It seems
as    this    system    gives    the
participants É (and  others)È a notion
of  fairness.   But is really voting
so  much more fair or so much better
than a jury?
 
No, voting is definitely not working
out  so well all the time.  But what
could   be  so  wrong  with  voting,
someone  might  ask,  it's  at least
more  democratic  than  a jury, they
say.
 
In  the  democompetitions voting may
work  to  a  certain  extent, but in
music  and  graphics competition, no
way.
 
First  of  all  a  tune shouldn't be
judged  by  a  bunch  of  dead tired
freaks  the  last  night at a party,
and  the ones judging should be able
to  hear  a tune more than once, and
voting  shouldn't  be done after all
the  contribtuions  are  played, and
the É "who  made  what  syndrome"È may
occour.   But  all that is just what
voting in a music competition is all
about.   Most people are tired, they
hear  only  two minutes of each tune
once,  rapidly  played  on after the
other,  and  the voting isn't taking
place   till   afterwards.   Another
thing about voting is that it's just
a  lot  of work, so people think why
bother?   I don't care who wins that
fucking music competition, the tunes
were   all  shit  anyway,  many  may
think.   So  in the end only a minor
part give their vote.  Among the few
actually   committing   the  act  of
voting,  how  many  are É "bribed"È or
talked  into  voting certain pieces?
How   many   vote  for  friends  and
acquintancies?   And  the  same goes
for  the  gfx  competition the whole
bunch  of  retouched  pictures (well
not all of them are retouched, but I
bet  a  majority  is É (and  that's a
pity!))È are showed rapidly, it isn't
always   easy   to   get   a   clear
impression   of  what  pictures  you
wanna   vote   for,  in  many  cases
coincidences occour.  And also here,
many    people,   particularly   the
objective  pople,  are giving a shit
about  voting.   It's  late ,they're
tired  ,sleep or vote?  Easy choice.

But  is  a  jury  any  better  then?
Isn't  that  just  some  of the easy
bribed  arrangers  having  a  joyful
time  turning  their  thumbs  up and
down  to  the  works  of people?  It
could be, and it certainly has been.
But there could also be a decent and
honest  jury  ,  really  doing their
best to decide, but still it doesn't
appeal  very  much to lots of people
,it  seems.   It  is  still a way of
É"dictatorship" È to  some,  but those
who   think  so,  should  reconsider
their    view.     Figure   skating,
gymnastics  and several other sports
are judged and decied by juries, and
noone  complains.   And I believe if
someone   arranged  real  good  jury
system,  one  would  get as close to
ultimate   fairness   as  one  could
possible get.

For   instance  one  could  assemble
approx.   É  20-30    random    party
participants È and  let  them  judge.
Each  competition  should be divided
into  different  categories and each
contribution  should be given points
in  each  category.   For  the music
competition the categories could for
example   be:   Overall  impression,
arrangement,     originality,    and
musical   quality   (the   technical
difficulty  and  the way the tune is
carried  out) For instance each jury
member  could  give  a  tune  points
ranging  from  1  to  100%  in  each
category   ,and   to   increase  the
righteousness  one  could  erase the
4-5   highest  and  the  4-5  lowest
points É (in  each  category)È, and to
encourage   as  neutral  judging  as
possible  one could have a price for
the jurymember who get most counting
scorings.   In a democompetition the
categories    could    be    overall
impression,gfx,   music,coding   and
ideas.   In  the graphic competition
it  is  a  bit worse ,but it's still
possibe to find some categories, for
instance:    É overall    impression,
motive,  light  &  colors,  and  how
technically   good  the  drawing  is
done.È

Well  actually I think a competition
like  this would be pretty fair, and
a   much   more   technical  way  of
reaching the results.

ÊI  hope  some  future partyarrangers
will adopt this method.
