TITLE:A DARK VISION OF THE FUTURE - CHAPTER 4 - By TRID. K. and MOP PALETTE:0333 0889 0b9a 06ac 3 CHAPTER IV "Live and Learn. Die and Forget..." 2 - Trid. K. of End Of Century Joy paused for some seconds. It would be one hell of a job to rescue all the data files. He had to make sure that all the salvaged data files in Sven's burned CyberDeck were intact to the original ones, but that was surely no easy job. Sven was no beginner, so Joy had also to face some protection programmes. First he had to run the Deck's scanning software by jumping to the correct start address! He had to be careful, but until now he had managed to fool the Deck system that he was just a little useful piece of application software! After a couple of wrong addresses, he seemed to have found the right one! Now, he just had to wait for the scanner programme to generate a report. Joy did not wait for so long to have the report. Most data files seemed to be still intact! Some function libraries were totally lost, but this was no big problem, as they were standard libraries, used in every CyberDeck! He just had to copy the new ones from Mock's Net! One small part of the CyberDeck system seemed to be corrupted, but fortunately enough this storage space was placed at a high location, and it was empty! The job now seemed to be less difficult that Joy had initially thought! He passed by a couple of security protections with no problem. He just had to insert himself between two interrupts, so as the defence system wouldn't detect him. He had to be careful as he didn't need to attract any Labrador icons after him! Infiltrating the backup programme, he began to copy the data files to another directory. This process would take some processor time, so meanwhile he downloaded the needed function libraries from the Net. Now the only thing left was to find some protection software for the new CyberDeck. Leaving the new hardware with no protection would be a crazy act, but it would be even crazier for him to try to copy Sven's old protection! Everything seemed to be running efficiently, so why should he attract any attention on him by messing around with the protection? The only alternative left was to use HIS own programme, and configure it to Sven's needs... A requester signal attracted Joy's attention. He had been waiting for quite a while now, so it was time for the backup programme to finish the copying task. Joy sprang out from the burned CyberDeck, and moved towards the new directory. Using his IXDIFF software, he checked the newly copied data files. > IXDIFF M:Sven_1.CD M:Sven_New.CD > IXDIFF V50.00948 Zeta Release (C) 3126 > Comparing files.. Please Stand by.. > Comparing ready. 50231 files checked 251 dirs checked. 1 Volume checked. > 236 files found changed. > Do you wish to check these files again? Joy looked at that magic number. > Y > Please enter filename of a valid report format? (65025441 file formats supported) > M:Protect_Report_CD.1 > Checking report file format... > Format recognised... > Please wait... > Now comparing files against Report info... > Comparing ready. 236 files checked. 1 dir checked. 1 volume checked. 235 files now recognised. 1 File not found. > Please wait... > Now checking file structure... > Checking ready... > File seems to be in standard ACRPT format. > Do you want to analyse the file integrity? > Y > Please wait... > Checking file integrity... > Checking Ready... > File seems to be incomplete... > Now Processing whole file... > Fixing file structure and integrity... > Processing complete... > Do you still want to save it in ACRPT format? > Y > Please enter a valid filename? > M:Unknown.Doc > File saved... > Do you want to quit IXDIFF? > Y Joy looked carefully around. He could only see data banks, so he saw no other alternative than to run his tracker software. The hound icon sniffed around, and ran away. It seemed as if it had found something. Joy kept running after it for sometime, but then he stopped all of a sudden, as he saw a half demolished tower amongst the other mass of data banks. Joy looked around for some seconds. He stared at the tower for some time and then went in. Once inside the tower, Joy inspected all the data he could see. It seemed to be in standard ACRPT format, just like his IXDIFF programme had reported. Joy sat down. A long session of reading was ahead... Joy came out of the tower. Everything else seemed in order now, he thought. The only thing left to do now, was to delete the whole corrupted CyberDeck files. That was no problem for him. > WipeFile M:Sven_1.CD > WipeFile V35654.21500 (C) 3126 > Are you sure you want to wipe all files? > Y > Please Wait... Wiping files... > Wiping complete. 50231 files wiped in 0.00221 sec. > Do you wish to wipe more files? > N > Quiting WipeFile... Sven came out from Mock's Net. These long sessions of matrix running were really killing him. He was almost exhausted. He now had to fetch Sven, who was resting in the lower area, so as he could start the system transfer via a direct connection to Mock's Net. Meanwhile, he could install a boot on the new CyberDeck. But first he had to find Sven...
