Digitiser on Ch4 Teletext (p470+) are getting right on my fuckin' tits just lately, not only have they decided that the Amiga has died and gone to rest, but even faced with it's return and inevitable sucess they're slagging it off like there's no tomorrow. Recently they asked viewers to write in with their thoughts to the line "Amiga is back: So What?", and did two things: supported those slating the Amiga, and contradicted those who love the Amiga. |1-Amiga is Back: So What? Accustomed as we are to incurring the lime-soaked wrath of Amiga lovers, we fully expected our rather inflammatory phrasing to unleash a back of sick. ^7^^450 But no: either we've finally alienated them all or disillusionment has infected their ranks. The few stalwarts now sound as shrill as smelly men at the Speaker's Corner shouting about the Coming of the Eggs. ---<02>--- Listen: £400 for a machine with a slow 020 processor is certainly wrong. If it had a 030, fast RAM and a hard disk, £400 would have been a fair price. Amiga Technologies think they've made up for the price by adding loads of serious software like photogenics - but what's the point when you need more memory to use it properly! Free from the influence of Amiga Mags trying to convince readers that Amigas will one day rule the world, I've realised it's as good as dead. It is only back to haunt us; a reminder of a better age. Walk into your local Menzies (or Smiths in Englandshire) - if you look closely in between PC Flowerpot and PC 18-30 you may find an Amiga Mag that nobody reads with a floppy disk on it. P. Grady. ---<05>--- After being a loyal Amiga owner for 5 years, I've now got a PS. What support did my purchase of an A1200 and CD³² earn me? A load of old A500 port-overs with flash intros. What about the AGA chipset for some graphics in the game? No, I'll never go back and I don't care that they've returned. I'm very pleased with my PS. It's meant to be a budget price but you can get a far better 486 for the same. I think Escom should revamp the A500. There are loads of them around and it has a better range of software. With a load of games and serious applications already on the market, the Amiga is one of the best multi-purpose, no-hassle, low-cost computers out. And retailers will discount them to £299. At £399, Escom is surely milking the name, then dumping it. Only dyed-in-the-wool Amiga maniacs will shell out to upgrades from A500s. It could have been a different story if AAA chipsets were ready and incorporated, along wih a CD drive. Let's face it. If Betamax was relaunched tody and cost more than VHS, would you buy one? And even the most ardent Amiga fans do not hold Commodore in anything less than total contemp. ---<11>--- It may be back, but the solid games that made it a great machine are now just third-rate, tired-looking seqeuls. Escom's 486SX pricing places the Amiga in a territory it's never relished. PCs and consoles are many times more powerful than four years ago - has the A1200 advanced likewise? It's now in a turbulent, dynamic market - not even Babylon 5 will save it this time. Can I just say that those boffins at Microsoft decided to release Windows '95 in September 1995. This was for this reason: It was getting near to 1996 and would have been extremely embarrasing to release a piece of software with 1995 on it and it was already 1996. Also technicians at Microsoft found 500+ bug in the Windows '95 program, and so decided rather than fix them they would simply delete the options that were faulty, thus making it bug free, brilliant idea...NOT! If they had ironed out the bugs it would have been called Windows '96 or maybe Windows '97 !? At last a multi-tasking WorkBench type program (well nearly) and only 10 years after the AMiga version was introduced, good idea Mr PC. Did you know that there is ALREADY updates for it out, sad eh.
