It  was  Valentines day, I had split with my girlfriend and so there was
nothing  on  the doormat for me, and while waiting for my lift into town
so that I could sign on I happened to glance at C4 Teletext P651.

There was a single-page article about absolutely FREE E-Mail, and I mean
100%  F-R-E-E:  free  to  join;  free to log on; free software and, most
importantly, a free-phone number dial-in!

What?   Too  good  to be true?  Well...  sort of.  The company is called
Electronic  Market  and they make their money by running adverts for any
company  who  wants  them.  On the internet this would cost about £300 a
month,  I  can  only  guess what it would cost on a captive E-Mail setup
(you get the ads whether you want them or not), but it must be enough to
allow users to dial in for free.

How  do you get your free account?  Dial 0990 993322, and tell the woman
on  the  other end of the phone your name, address and telephone number,
the  CPU  of your PC, amount of RAM and speed of modem (she will ask you
for  all  of  these in turn), and whether you want your Mail software on
disk  or  CD-ROM,  and that is IT, you're registered!  If she asks where
you  heard  about  Electronic  Market, make sure you tell them it was in
"The Word", and offer them my E-Mail address.

Your  software will arrive in the post in a few days time, install it on
your  computer,  run  it,  and enjoy completely free E-Mail!  Isn't that
worth  the  teensy-little-bit-of-hassle of a few adverts?  And you might
actually see something that you like anyway, in which case it's a bonus!

Okay,  I  confess.   While  I  was composing my first few mails I didn't
actually  notice  any  adverts!  On closer examination I discovered that
the  tiny  loop  anim in the top-right corner (hidden BEHIND my notepad)
was in fact an ad for Scottish Widows, and that was it!

Installation is rediculously easy, taking less than a minute, setup is a
little  more complex but only because I didn't know what brand the modem
was,  even  then  I  just bunged it on "Hayes Compatible", which worked!
The  software  is pretty damned professional, very clear and uncluttered
and does everything you'd want such a program to do.

The  first  time  you  use it you're asked for your name and what E-Mail
name  you  want,  no  exclamation  mark  for  me I'm afraid, but you are
allowed capitals.  You'll get the standard short questionaire, and er...
that's about it!

So  far I've paid absolutely NO money, and the dialup numhber is an 0800
number,  I  like it!  The only time you'll pay is when you dial the 0990
numbers which are charged at local rate, must be good!

Minimum spec:   486, 8Mb, Win 3.1 or 95 and a modem.

Unfortunately  there  are no plans for an Amiga version of the software,
but  if  you  grab a copy of PC Task that will allow you to run Windows,
then you can find your way around even this!
