Amiga pinball games have been very
popular in the past and no doubt will
remain so if the standards keep
getting better. As a pinball punter
when I first read of Slam Tilt I was a
bit excited, after playing Pinball
Dreams, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball
Illusions to death I couldn't wait to
get my hands on this. At a first
glance you would think it's Pinball
Illusions all over again. Spend about
1 hour playing it and it surpasses it.
The ball movement is very realistic
but the ball itself doesn't have the
fancy shine of Pinball Illusions. The
flippers are very responsive and
always flip when you press the button.
There are 4 tables, being Mean
Machines, Pirates, Ace of Space and
Night of the Demon.
*2@5
Mean Machines is themed around racing
cars, monster trucks and stock car
racing... that sort of thing! The
*2music is a constant thumping rock type
tune and sounds great. The table is
set up well with various tunnels and
ball traps to go through. Games
include Drag Racing (watch out, your
keyboard will never forgive you!)
where you have to bray the shit out of
the flippers in order to get faster
times for more points. Off-Road Race
(3 ball multi-ball) jackpots start at
about 10 million so huge scores can be
obtained. Formula 1 race, has to be
seen to be believed. In the middle of
the pinball game a racing game pops
up. The display panel at the top of
the screen becomes a racing track, you
use the flippers to steer the car and
there are no brakes. 20 million is
awarded for each completed lap and the
xtra ball is lit for doing all six.
An energy bar is up the side so watch
how many times you crash. Speed,
there are 4 ways of getting Speed
letters. 2 are to go around the same
tunnels 3 times to get 1 letter.
Start a mode and get one, or get the
skillshot at the beginning. (Xtra
balls and prizes can also be won).
Once you have lit Speed up, try to
complete all laps so 3rd prize can
also be won. Now enter the mode start
trap to get the side lane saver and
Speed at the same time. Next pinball
heaven. 4 ball multi-ball! The
screen will flip to high res and ball
after ball will fire in to play.
Absolutely humongous scores will
amass.

Pirates is proberly the worst table of
all 4 but it's still quite good. I
haven't played this table as much as
the rest but here goes. The theme is
along the lines, hook and sailing
*2pirates in general. With games
ranging from, Walking the Plank to
Crocodile multi-balls to Knife
Throwing. The music is jolly enough
but grinds on you after a while. The
sampled speech is very convincing.
Sounds just like what you'd expect a
pirate to sound like (i.e. very deep
voice). But the table overall is poor
compared to the other three.

Ace of Space is without doubt the best
pinball table on any Amiga game. The
theme as you may have guessed (thick
as shit if you haven't!) is space.
The missions are Blam (my favourite as
you get to blow a PeeCee away amongst
other things), Hack the Net, Space
Race and Asteroid Belt. All of which
are easy to access. The modes are
Alien Attack (3 ball multi-ball.),
Lightsabre (Which is a Star Wars type
fight with light sabres.), Death
Planet, (Which, strangely enough, is a
rip-off of the Deathstar bit from Star
Wars. You have to fly through
numerous corridors, with walls all the
way through, with a small hole which
if you don't make it will result in
blowing up. Get to the end and it
blows up.), Speeder Bikes and Walker
War. Now Walker War is brilliant . 2
ball multi-ball in which the ball trap
must be shot when a cross hair appears
at the top of the screen in which you
must press Return at the right time to
blow the Walker's head clean off his
shoulders, while trying to keep the
other ball in play as all of this is
going on. Finally, do all of the
games and you are presented with the
Big Blam, a 4 ball multi-ball in which
the aim is the destroy the solar
system.

Night of the Demon is all about
horror. Games include Bat Butcher
(Where you must get up the right tube
at the right time in order to blow
away the bats.), Mega Mutant, Treasure
Hunt and a few others. Witch Craft is
spooky, once the game is entered the
ball then has a mind of its own. It's
as if there's one huge magnet all
around the table as it (the ball) is
pulled upwards when it was coming down
and generally going berserk as it
pleases. The sound effects and music
are gripping. Excellent screams and
werewolf noises keep the atmosphere at
peak all of the time during play.
Even more so when played in the dark
at night.

After everything is said and done,
Slam Tilt is the new benchmark in
Amiga pinball games. I just hope this
provokes Digital Illusions to come up
with another pinball game. Although
not the greatest, the Extreme Sports
table off Pinball Illusions is still
my best table of all time.

Final word time, all tables have 2, 3
and 4 multi-ball games, plenty of sub
games and one game at the score panel
where no ball is involved in that
game. Presentation is excellent
throughout and the game is a total joy
to play. Liquid Dezign need the
computer world's oscar for this one.
