Having  just  reinstalled  all  of  my
software in my collection back onto my
hard   drive,   after   attempting  to
optimize   or  defragment  my  largest
partition,  I  lost all the stuff that
was  on  my Work:  partition.  About a
good  2  years  of work.  Lucky, I was
able  to  save  a bit of it.  I lost a
lot  of  stuff  that I cannot replace.
Including all of my A-level notes that
I  planned  to release as a three disk
AmigaGuide     with    pictures    and
everything.

Having  had  my hard drive for about 7
months  I partitioned it and installed
my  software  onto it.  I was thinking
to  myself  the  other day that it waz
about  time I optimised the drive.  It
just  makes  the  drive  run faster by
defragmenting   all   the   files   by
deleting  them, then copying them back
so  there  in order again.  Well I was
about  half  way  though  this process
when I ran out of memory.

The  computer just stopped and then it
hit  a  major  Guru.  I think it was a
bit unwell!  Well, I ran Disksalv2 and
was  able  to  get  back  a lot of the
articles  that  I  had already written
for   BS-E-4.    Namely  the  Assembly
Language  tutorial  and  this  was 10K
alone  and  about a good 2 hours work.
I was also able to get back some of my
music  mods, but I am missing a lot of
my  best  modules.  This really pisses
me off.  A big thanks to Steve for his
help   in   recovering   some  of  the
classics!!    I   also  lost  all  the
articles  that  I  had  in progress so
they  will  have  to be written again.
Well,  I  suppose  I  do have a bit of
time to do this as it is only May now.

So  what  was the point in telling you
about  this,  and what is the moral of
this little story.

Well,  the  moral of the story is that
you  must @2 B@3A@4C@5K@6U@7P@1  your hard-drive.  I
recommend at least once a month if you
use  your  computer  a  lot.   I  have
reviewed  every  single backup program
that I have and think that A-Backup is
by far the best.  I have only reviewed
PD  programs  as  I  can  only  afford
these.   I  recommend  that you have a
directory  just for the stuff you wish
to  backup.   I  use  a data directory
which  stores  all  my savework.  This
directory  is  about  25MB in size and
takes about 4 hours to back up.

I   am   thinking   of   releasing   a
complication  of  all the utils that I
use  a  lot.   This will make ordering
certain   titles  from  a  PD  library
easier  as  they  will  all  be on one
disk.   This  disk  will  probably  be
compressed  and  will  include all the
docs  for all the progs.  I would like
to  hear people's views before I start
a utils disk complication.
