   WHAT IS DATA INDEX?
   =========================================================================
Data Index is a database program which allows you to keep track of
anything you would like. For instance addresses, books, tapes or your
software collection with the cheat codes. Data Index is completely driven
by mouse, but for those of you who like to type (I do), it is keyboard
   driven as well!

The records are referred to as ITEMs in the Data Index program. Using the
design menu, you can create the definition of these items. With the
options available, almost everything is possible! Just take a look at the
example XDEF.* files in the XDEF directory.

The items are shown on the MATRIX screen. When you select an item, either
by clicking over it with the mouse or using the menu, you will get the
ITEM screen. On that screen you will see the contents of the item. When
you want to change that, simply choose edit and you are presented with
even more options to choose from.

There is a special item called the SEARCH item. Using this item, you can
mark the items in the index. Enter data on the fields that are of
importance to your selection and start the search. Items that were found
using this search, will be marked and shown in red on the matrix screen.
Marking items can be useful when you want to print just a selection of
   the items.

All data displayed on screen can also be printed on paper. There are
several options to do this. Using the printer control codes, you can
adjust the output to your own liking. The best way to find out, is to
try it! On the disk you will find several example PRNT.* files with
control codes, look in the PRNT directory.

All options available will change colour when you move the mouse over
them. And when you don't know what they mean, well, simply hit the HELP
key and you will get all the information you need.

   GETTING STARTED
   =========================================================================
For a quick start, either select the icon from the workbench or type
DataIndexPro from CLI. When you start the program for the CLI, you can
   add a few extra commands:

                   DataIndexPro {path} {INDX.name} {toggle code}

Each of the three options can be omitted, but when you do use them, this
   is what they mean:

{path} - This is the path where Data Index should look for
the files you are to use. You can select this path
also from within the program, but this way you have
                      faster access.

{INDX.name} - This is an INDX.* file (an index memory bank), when
the program is started the index will automatically
be loaded. Thus saving you the trouble to load it
                      by hand.

{toggle code} - This code has to be entered between square brackets,
                      "[" and "]". Use a 0, 1 or 2 to set the autosave
(none, 10 minutes & 20 minutes interval). Also you
can enter F, D, T and L to switch the printer
control on (file name, date, time & letter quality).

   Examples:

      DataIndexPro
---> start the program with the default settings, [1FD]

      DataIndexPro df1:
---> using default settings, set access to drive df1:

      DataIndexPro [0L]
---> disable the autosave, switch only letter quality on

      DataIndexPro [X]
---> use default autosave, switch all printer toggles off

      DataIndexPro INDX.Addresses
---> use default settings, load the INDX.Addresses file

      DataIndexPro df1:INDX.Cheats [2FDTL]
---> set path to df1:, load INDX.Cheats, set autosave to 20
minutes interval and switch all printer toggles on

Once you have started the program, you must define your items. Do this
using the design menu. Of course, when you have started with an INDX.*
file, you already have such a definition. Remember, select your item
definition carefully! When you have entered data and find you need to
adjust the fields, you might loose that data. I am sorry, but that's
the way Data Index works. A way to adjust those fields, is to make a
second data bank. Adjust the fields to your liking, and copy the old
bank into the new one (using the copy from buffer option).

   QUESTION & ANSWER
   =========================================================================
Q: I am lazy, is there a way to enter a lot of characters with just one
      key press?
A: Yes, use the BUFFER mode to create some nice input strings. Then use
the function keys in the edit mode to reproduce them.

Q: My printer acts weird when I select a print option. I checked the
printer control codes, they are right for my printer.
A: Did you install your own printer driver in the :DEVS/PRINTERS
directory and did you select that printer with preferences? No, well,
      do it now!

Q: When I print something, the printer always resets to the default font,
      how can I avoid this?
A: Simple, add the printer control code to select the special font after
the code for the printer reset!

Q: I created my own set of printer control codes, but every time I start
the Data Index program, I have to reload them...
A: You didn't read all the information! Save the codes using PRNT.Default
as name, your codes will then be loaded when you start the program.

Q: I created a file called PRNT.Default, but it won't load on start up...
A: It only works when it is in the same directory where you started the
Data Index program from. But when you start the program using the
{path} option, the PRNT.Default file is loaded from the directory you
      specified with that path.

Q: I created a file called COLR.Default, but it won't load on start up...
A: See the comments on the PRNT.Default file, it works the same way.

Q: When I start the sort on the matrix screen, it is slow...
A: Not really, use only the fields you really need to sort and you will
see that it is much faster.

Q: Each time I switch to the matrix screen it costs a lot of time just to
      show an empty screen...
A: Allocate only the memory you need for the index. Not only will the
performance be quicker, but you will need less disk space to hold
      your data.

Q: I don't know what is possible on some screens...
A: Simple, press the HELP key and you will get all the information you
will need. Or read this documentation again...

Q: When I am editing, why do I have to close an item, jump to the next,
      and select edit again?
A: You don't! Use the editor HOT KEYS as described in the information
      environment.

Q: Sometimes, when I do a lot of editing, a guru pops up...
A: Yeah, and my name is Santa Claus! Everything should go fine unless
you start pulling disks from the drive when the computer is accessing
them. But then, who is stupid enough to do such a dumb thing?

Q: I have an index bank with a lot of data, and I want an extra field.
When I add this field, all data will be erased, how is it possible
for me to get this new field?
A: First you load your index, then save it to one of the two internal
buffers. Select the design definition option from the menu and add
the new field. The data will be erased, but that is not a problem!
Select the design allocation option from the menu and make your
index bank large enough to hold the number of items you had in your
original bank. Then select data copy from the menu, selecting the
buffer you saved your bank to in the first place. Select the fields,
select the items and start copy. You now have added a field to your
      index bank!

Q: I have an index bank with a lot of data, and I want to loose a field.
When I delete this field, all data will be erased. Help me...
A: Just follow the procedure as described above for adding a field.

   TECHNICAL INFORMATION
   =========================================================================
Now some technical information about the program. The program was written
using AMOS over a period of 6 months. After that, the modifications took
even more time then the initial program. See the program history for all
   the dirty details.
You can create an index memory bank varying in size between 5 and 200 Kb.
Depending on the size of your item and bank, you can have a maximum of
975 items in the index. Sorry, no more than 975 because the matrix screen
   isn't any bigger.
The items, which you can design yourself, can have a maximum of 25 fields
with a maximum length of 50 characters per field. Thus having 1250 bytes
   per item maximum.
Since the index bank can be 200 Kb and the program on his own needs about
450 Kb to run, you will have to have at least 1 Mb of memory (even with
a 5 Kb bank). That's the bad news, but the good news is, that the program
is compatible with all Amiga models, even the new Amiga 1200 (thanks to
   AMOS Professional 2.00).

   PRINTER CONTROL CODES
   =========================================================================
The program calculates the effective printer line length using the codes
for the LEFT MARGIN and the CHARACTER PITCH. I use a Star LC24-10 and I
have based the calculations on the codes for that printer. Since most
people use a Star printer and the printer is epson compatible, I think
not many will have problems. Just in case, I have included a list with
the codes and the line length that is calculated from them:

                          +----------------+-----+
                          | 27 80 | 80 |
                          | 18 | 80 |
                          +----------------+-----+
                          | 27 77 | 96 |
                          | 27 58 | 96 |
                          +----------------+-----+
                          | 27 103 | 120 |
                          | 27 103 15 | 120 |
                          | 27 103 27 15 | 120 |
                          | 15 27 103 | 120 |
                          | 27 15 27 103 | 120 |
                          +----------------+-----+
                          | 27 80 15 | 136 |
                          | 27 80 27 15 | 136 |
                          | 15 27 80 | 136 |
                          | 27 15 27 80 | 136 |
                          | 18 15 | 136 |
                          | 18 27 15 | 136 |
                          | 15 18 | 136 |
                          | 27 15 18 | 136 |
                          +----------------+-----+
                          | 27 77 15 | 160 |
                          | 27 77 27 15 | 160 |
                          | 15 27 77 | 160 |
                          | 27 15 27 77 | 160 |
                          +----------------+-----+

The effective line length is calculated by subtracting the value of the
most right code of the LEFT MARGIN and subtracting 1 for a small margin
on the right side of the paper. When you are not satisfied with these
codes, or your pinter uses totally different codes, write to me at the
address shown above. I will then include your codes in the program.

PRINTOUT OF THE HELP PROVIDED FROM WITHIN THE PROGRAM
   =========================================================================
Below is the text you get when you start Data Index without the special
options like PRNT.Default, printer toggles or even an INDX file. When
you for instance select letter quality, the menu changes and this will
then be shown in the information environment.

        6: MENU - DATA (1 of 4)
           ------------------------------------------------------------

           Load : From Disk <R-AMIGA><L>
                           Buffer 1 <R-AMIGA><R-SHIFT><L>
                           Buffer 2 <R-AMIGA><L-SHIFT><L>

            - Load a new INDX file from disk or replace the current
index bank with one of the two internal buffers.

           Save : To Disk <R-AMIGA><S>
                         Buffer 1 <R-AMIGA><R-SHIFT><S>
                         Buffer 2 <R-AMIGA><L-SHIFT><S>

            - Save the current bank to disk as an INDX file or replace
one of the internal buffers with the current index.

        7: MENU - DATA (2 of 4)
           ------------------------------------------------------------

Loading from or saving to an internal buffer uses a lot
of memory. It is therefore only wise to use these options
when you have small index files or at least 500 Kb of free
memory. When not enough memory is available, the bank to
to which the data is to be copied will be minimized.

Autosave : Not Active <R-AMIGA><0> - No automatic save
                                                     of changed data
                      -> 10 Minutes   <R-AMIGA><1> - Set interval to 10
                                                     minutes for save
                         20 Minutes <R-AMIGA><2> - Set interval to 20
                                                     minutes for save

        8: MENU - DATA (3 of 4)
           ------------------------------------------------------------

           Exchange : With Buffer 1 <R-AMIGA><R-SHIFT><E>
                           Buffer 2 <R-AMIGA><L-SHIFT><E>

            - Exchange the current index with the index in one of the
two internal buffers. The current index will be stored
in the buffer and the buffer will become current index.

           Copy : From Buffer 1 <R-AMIGA><R-SHIFT><C>
                           Buffer 2 <R-AMIGA><L-SHIFT><C>

            - Copy items from one of the two internal buffers into the
current index bank. This option can be used to convert,
              split or merge index banks.

        9: MENU - DATA (4 of 4)
           ------------------------------------------------------------

Erase : From Disk <R-AMIGA><D> - Delete an INDX
                                                     file from disk

Fixed bug in the hot key routine used to select the next/previous
           search marked item.
Major change to the sort routine. You now can select the fields
you wish to use for the sort, no longer just the first number of
bytes. Also used this feature to select the order of the fields

           window.

Changed the overall look of the program by using more colours and
animated buttons for the options. This is the first version to
           receive the title PRO.
Fixed bug in the editor routine, you could move the cursor outside
the field and cause a crash when you went far enough. This editor
is now used for all keyboard input in the program.
Changed load routine, no more crash when loading a file that has
no hard returns, chr$(13), in it.
Changed text on the status window, no '*' but '...' when directory
           name is too long.

loaded on start-up like the PRNT.Default file.
Added new print mode for printing items. This new mode, SHORT,
allows you to print adhesive labels, ideal for addresses...

the LIST option. No more guessing whether it will fit on the line.

           too long.

Build own file requester, hereby fixing the ugly guru that would
pop up when selecting a drive with no disk in it. I know, I could
have used the AMOS Professional file selector, but that one will
crash when you select PRT:, PAR: or SER: as device...
Changed several routines and used new commands to get a much
better performance. The sort is now amazingly fast!
Added error routine when accessing the printer device.
The information environment has of course been updated.

           has to be executed.
Added a slider bar at the bottom of the screen when building the
           matrix screen.

           error.

Fixed bug in allocation routine, no more crash when you are low
           on memory.
Added internal buffers. You can now save to and load from two
internal buffers. It is now also possible you copy items from
a buffer into the current index. This way you can convert, split
           or merge index banks.
Changed the status window, extra system and buffer information.
Changed the columns in the field order selection (exchanged the

Fixed bug in menu routine, sometimes the colours would be changed.
   V3.30 - 05.03.1994
Added regular calling of the garbage collection routine. Sometimes
the program would crash in a 'string too long' error. I think that
this was caused by the automatic calling of the garbage collector.
Added set-up window for printing adhesive labels using the short
mode on the print item screen. You can now enter the number of
lines and the number of characters to be printed.
